Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022. Meta’s speech-to-speech translation Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form. 第2页/共15页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text. Method to identify Parkinson’s disease Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the AI system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent. Tool to interpret pig emotions Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions. The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven approach to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals. Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings Researchers—led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind—said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written. The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent. 1. Which can be used for cross-cultural communication? A. Tool to interpret pig emotions. B. Meta’s speech-to-speech translation. C. Method to identify Parkinson’s disease D. Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings. 2. Who will most probably be interested in Ithaca? A. A sculptor. B. A biologist. C. A chemist. D. An archaeologist. 3. What do the inventions have in common? A. They focus on health issues. B. They are developed by Facebook. . C They aim to promote productivity. D. They are AI-driven technology tools. B The snow was falling. The schools were over earlier than usual, but much to my surprise my appointment wasn’t canceled. And so I went, feeling especially heroic. Snow or no snow, I’d be on time for my scheduled donation at the local blood center. When I got there, I discovered four more “hero-types” were already there, with machines quietly collecting their lifesaving gifts. Seeing them made me believe that while I was proud to be there, I wasn’t a hero. And any silly heroic thoughts quickly disappeared as I lay back in my own donor chair and began my donation. I was ready 第3页/共15页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司to make a difference in the life of someone I’ d never meet. My wife Karen is a donor, too. She’s been on the bone marrow (骨髓) list for fifteen years, ever since she signed up to provide bone marrow to a child. That little girl died before Karen’s bone marrow could help her, but Karen was called again recently as it turned out she might be a match for someone else. The caller asked Karen if she’d still be willing to become a bone marrow donor. “Yes,” she said and then immediately began answering questions in preparation for the pages of paperwork to follow. It was a race against time. I wish I could say this race was won, but again it wasn’t. Last week Karen gave blood and next week I’ll make my usual donation. I’ll clear an afternoon from my schedule and call for an appointment. Whatever blood product they need whole, I’ll gladly give. I don’t know whose life my donation may affect, but it really doesn’t matter. And sadly, while so few among us actually take the time to donate, Karen and I always will. 4. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph? A. He is quite fond of taking risks. B. He is a man who always keeps his word. C. The snow almost ruined his appointment. D. He never thinks donating blood is a heroic deed. 5. What influence did other donors have on the author? A. They changed his attitude to himself. B. They helped him find joy in donating. C. They made him feel it a duty to donate. D. They strengthened his belief not to be a donor. 6. What does the passage say about Karen and her bone marrow donation? A. She has been found a match to nobody. B. She decided to join in it over 20 years ago. C. She fell in trouble when she came to paperwork. D. She has already met with two failures in donation. 7. Which of the following shows the author’s opinion? A. More people should have become donors. B. The donation itself should have been made easier. C. Receivers should have been introduced to donors. D. More blood products should have been developed. C For the first time, scientists have measured what actually happens with face-to-face interactions when 第4页/共15页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司employees start to work at an open-plan office, and their results show these modern workspaces are not as cooperative as you’d think. Two researchers from Harvard Business School and Harvard University wanted to test whether removing walls at a real-world workplace really increases interactions between co-workers. “To our knowledge, no prior study has directly measured the effect on actual interaction that results from removing walls to create an open office environment,” Ethan S. Bernstein and Stephen Turban write in the paper. To that end, they approached two multinational companies that were re-organizing their office spaces at the global headquarters, and enlisted small groups of employees for two studies. For eight weeks before the office redesign and eight weeks afterward, the researchers tracked employees’ social interactions and locations. This data was analyzed together with email and instant messaging information from the company’s servers to measure differences in how people were communicating with each other. What they found was a pretty astonishing difference in face-to-face interactions — but not in the direction you might think. Across both experiments, employees’ social interactions in person decreased by a crazy 70 percent, while emails saw an uptick by roughly 20 to 50 percent. So, instead of spending more time cooperating with co-workers in the new space where everyone could see them, people got their heads down and tried to preserve their privacy any way they could. According to these results, it appears that being forced into a more open-plan environment can make people switch from chatting to others in person to sending an email or using instant messaging instead. As the team notes, it’s not automatically a bad thing, but it can certainly change work dynamics in an unexpected way. “That can have important consequences for how — and how productively — work gets done,” the researchers conclude. 8. How did the two multinational companies redesign their offices? A. By expanding the total floor areas. B. By updating the computer servers. C. By changing the employees’ locations. D. By tearing down the space boundaries. 9. Why did the employees prefer email or instant messaging in an open office space? A. To reduce the risk of privacy leaks. B. To establish efficient communication. C. To facilitate indirect social interaction. D. To transform traditional work patterns. 10. What can be inferred from the researchers’ saying in the last paragraph? 第5页/共15页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司A. Further relevant research needs conducting. B. Their research findings are of practical value. C. Their team intends to change working environment. D. People hold different opinions on how work gets done. 11. What is the main idea of the text? A. Real-world workplaces increase employees’ interaction. B. Work dynamics don’t have much effect on work efficiency. C. Modern workspaces change workers’ way of communication. D. Open-plan offices can’t promote cooperation between co-workers. D If you mention “voice technology”, most people think of Siri, Alexa or Cortana. While personal artificial intelligence (AI) assistants are becoming increasingly popular in our everyday lives, they are just one use of voice tech, and are primarily designed for adults. Irish tech company SoapBox Labs wants that to change. The company has developed speech recognition technology designed specifically for children, and it’s already in use across a range of applications, from toys to education apps. Children’s voices differ from that of adults. “Typically, they have a higher pitch (音高) , and may use different language or speech patterns, which regular voice technology cannot always pick up on.” explains Patricia Scanlon, the founder of SoapBox. “It’s understandable that an industry that has spent decades working on technology and only focusing on adults runs into a fairly significant problem when they try to apply it to children.” Rather than making slight changes to the available voice technology already on the market, SoapBox builds its voice engine from scratch-focusing on children aged 2 to 12. The company says it created a data set to train its AI system, made up of thousands of hours of children’s speech collected in real-world noisy environments-kitchens, classrooms and cars-from kids of all ages, accents and dialects (方言) , from a total of 192 countries. This opens up a whole new market, for which there's growing demand. More than 8 billion digital voice assistants are expected to be in use, and there is an increased focus on adapting the tech for children. SoapBox, which is selling a technology rather than a product, has attracted more than 50 clients from around the world. The technology can help a child learn to read or learn a language. It acts as a helpful adult, reacting immediately to the child and giving them one-on-one time, and it can also help to record a child’s progress and provide recommendations to a teacher or parent. 12. What makes SoapBox different from Siri? A. Its use of voice tech. B. Its creative use of AI. 第6页/共15页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司C. It is designed for children. D. It is used on many applications. 13. What can we infer according to Scanlon in paragraph 3? A. A lot of effort has gone into developing SoapBox. B. Voice technology has much room for development. C. There has been great demand for a system like SoapBox. D. SoapBox understands adults’ voice better than that of children. 14. What did SoapBox use to build its voice engine? A. Recordings of 192 dialects. B. Data from a previous system. C. Speech from people of all ages. D. Newly-collected speech of children. 15. What does the underlined word “recommendations” in the last paragraph mean? A. Registrations. B. Suggestions. C. Declarations. D. Confirmations. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Listening is one of the four primary forms of communication, along with reading, writing, and speaking. ___16___. There’s a higher form of listening, fortunately, which leads to real communication. We call it “genuine listening”. And it’s the kind of practice we want to put to use. But to do genuine listening, you need to do three things differently. ___17___. It is reported that only 7 percent of communication is contained in the words we use. The rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words, or the tone and feeling reflected in our voice (40 percent) . To hear what other people are really saying, you also need to listen to what they’re not saying. ___18___, everyone is tender inside and has a desperate need to be understood. Stand in their shoes. To become a genuine listener, you need to take off your shoes and stand in another’s. In the words of Robert Byrne, “Until you walk a mile in another man’s shoes you can’t imagine the smell”. ___19___ Practice mirroring. Think like a mirror. What does a mirror do? It doesn’t judge. It doesn’t give advice. It reflects. Mirroring is simply this: Repeat back in your own words what the other person is saying and feeling. Mirroring isn’t mimicking (模仿) . Mimicking is when you repeat exactly what the other person says, like a parrot. If you practice mirroring but don’t really desire to understand others, they will see through it. If your attitude is right but you don’t have the skill, you’ll be okay. ___20___. If you have both the attitude and the skill, you’ll become a powerful communicator! A. Listen with your eyes, heart, and ears B. Choose some interesting topics C. You must try to see the world as they see it and feel as they feel D. It’s a bad habit to pretend to listen to other people 第7页/共15页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司E. However, many people don’t know how to listen F. But it doesn’t work the other way around G. No matter how hard people may appear on the surface. I, Amy, am always proud of my frankness and honesty. Suddenly my heart was raising and fear rose within me. I was nervous as I started to feel sick, really sick. I ran to the bathroom and washed my face with cold water to calm myself down, looking into the mirror and whispering “Come on, you can do this.” Some were looking forward to this moment for ages; but not me. I felt frightened every time I imagine how uncomfortable it would be on a stage, and being the center of attention. If it was a speech, I could manage, but repeating a scene from a movie that has already been done by professional actors is really hard because we get compared to them. But there was no choice. As I made it to the hall, my head went blank. Suddenly I felt nervous as I couldn't remember all the lines (台 词) . Once I was there in the hall, my brain stopped working because of all the noise and the atmosphere in the air. As soon as the judges entered, the crowd quieted down and the performances began. I was really nervous until the first performer was called. But the more I waited, the more tired I got of waiting. At this moment, I was eager to my turn to give the performance, instead of suffering from the long time waiting. When the teacher called me to walk onto the stage, my heart beat raced again. I had a good look around, and there were only 30-40 people. Be there or be square. Yours, Li Hua 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】 I introduced myself and started to perform what I had been dying for long before. First I felt a bit short of breath due to my nervousness. But I tried to push myself to picture myself as the real actor in the movie, engaging in the role I was playing. Soon, my hands stopped sweating, voice stopped shaking, and my performance sounded as natural as possible. More than once I heard the thundering applause from the audience, which relieved me knowing I was doing a great job. The more I went on, the more confident I became. After I was done, I looked at the audience, thinking how much I loved doing this. I sensed their appreciation from their faces, satisfaction from their eyes. To my amazement, they all stood up, giving deafening applause, cheering and shouting “Bravo...!” I felt so relieved and content, realizing standing on the stage is not a big deal at all. Actually, the audience are the best supporters and all I have to do is to try my best. Being on the stage has taught me the best lesson ever: just be devoted to what you are doing. 听力 1—5 ABBCB 6—10 ACCAA 11—15 CBBAC 16—20 CACBB 第15页/共15页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司
