Jeff Steele was born in Texas and grew up in Mississippi. A gifted singer, Jeff began writing songs when he
was in high school. “I was going to be the next Lionel Richie,” he recalls with a smile, In time, however, Jeff began
to write songs, and in the early 1980s formed a group called The Steeles. Within a decade, not only had the groupsigned a recording contract with Daywind Records, but Jeff became a staff writer for the label and moved his
family to Nashville, Tennessee.
Throughout the 1990s, Jeff penned a string of hits for Daywind, including four No.1 songs for The Steeles.
Not only does Jeff write for his group, but he also has his songs recorded by other artists that include Greater
Vision, The Florida Boys, The Perrys, The Gaither Vocal Band and others. Jeff’s efforts have collected four BMI
Awards for radio singles by Karen Peck & New River, The Inspirations, and Legacy Five, along with a popular
song by The Steeles. That song also received a Dove Awards nomination (提名), as did “Not One Word” by The
Collingsworth Family.
What has changed for Jeff regarding songwriting over the last three decades? “I used to write everything
alone, but now I enjoy co-writing, especially with my son, Brad.” The Steeles’ latest StowTown Records release,
Be the Reason, contains multiple songs penned by the father and son, with each having an unusual feel. Perhaps
this is because Brad — at age 30 — is writing as a young man from the point of looking forward, and Jeff — at age
63 — is writing from a pen of wisdom and experience. This may also be part of the reason that their songs are
connecting with all of us: because we, as listeners, can benefit from both generations.
24. Who might Lionel Richie be?
A. A staff writer. B. A friend of Jeff’s.
C. A well- known singer. D. A member of The Steeles.
25. What does Paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A. Jeff’s essential role in his group. B. Jeff’s influence on other artists.
C. Jeff’s secret to success as a singer. D. Jeff’s extraordinary achievements.
26. What is special about Be the Reason?
A. It was completed by Bra d himself. B. It shows intergenerational interaction.
C. It displays people from all walks of life. D. It received a Dove Awards nomination.
27. Which of the following can best describe Jeff?
A. Talented and devoted. B. Tough and generous.
C. Academic and friendly. D. Ambitious and imaginative.
C
There are many projects aiming to refill or broaden the biological diversity of wild animal populations that are
in jeopardy. Few are more vital to survival than efforts to save the Tasmanian devil (袋獾). Since the mid-1990s,
devils have been facing Devil Facial Tumour Discase(DFTD)that spreads rapidly and has caused a sharp decline
in populations.
In response to this threat, the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program (STDP) was established, with the vision ofensuring the survival of an enduring and ecologically functional population of Tasmanian devils in the wild. One
significant initiative of the STDP occurred in 2012 and 2013 when scientists and conservationists translocated a
disease- free group of 28 devils to Maria Island off the east coast of Tasmania. The aim was to create a self-
sustaining group that could serve as a backup population. Over the next four years, the devil population on Maria
Island grew rapidly, reaching around 100 individuals, the predicted carrying capacity for the island.
So far so good. But new studies headed by Dr Vincent Scoleri from the University of Tasmania have revealed
serious consequences for the island’s brush- tail possum (刷尾负鼠)population. The introduction and rapid rise of
the devils, a top predator (捕食者), has dramatically reduced the survival and population of possums, less so in
forested areas, but greatly in grassland areas.
Yet that’s not all bad news, according to the scientists. The possums themselves arrived on Maria Island only
in the 1950s and have spread to new habitats such as the grasslands, where they became plant- and- animal eaters
by hunting shearwater adults and chicks in nesting sites.
The scientists note that restoration of native top predators in such ecosystems could be a beneficial
management tool when other prey (猎物) species have become overdominant from a lack of predation.
28. What does the underlined part “in jeopardy” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Within reach. B. Beyond belief.
C. Under threat. D. Upon arrival.
29. Why were some devils moved to a new place?
A. To support the survival of the species. B. To train them to live a sustainable life.
C. To stop the spread of the deadly disease. D. To enhance the biological diversity there.
30. What did the new studies find after the re- introduction of devils?
A. Plant- and- animal eaters decreased dramatically.
B. Possums moved from grasslands to forests.
C. Devils brought disaster to many native species.
D. Devils greatly impacted possums’ survival.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Devils harm all native species.
B. Possums are a recent arrival.
C. Top predators can restore ecosystem balance.
D. Possums will survive without predators.

Scott Nover, a journalist, was trying to log into a website on his laptop when he found himself staring at apicture of a woodland creature wearing a jacket with flowers and watermelon slices moving about. He had entered
the strange new world of captchas (验证码).
For years, people trying to shop online or log into social media accounts might be pressed to complete
bothersome but largely simple tasks— working out words in distorted (变形的) type, clicking on pictures of buses,
adding up numbers. Now those tasks are getting odder and require more brain power.
.
Captcha is short for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart It
was developed at the turn of this century to prevent bots from disrupting (扰乱) websites and their databases by
pretending to be well- intentioned human users. It challenges people to prove they are humans by presenting tasks
that only humans can solve. Companies use captchas to protect against bot attacks that can crash their websites.
The companies and experts who design captchas have been doing all they can to stay one step ahead of the bad
actors figuring out how to break them. A cottage industry of third- party captcha- solving firms has emerged. More
alarmingly, so has technology that can automatically solve simple tests, such as identifying photos of motorcycles
and reading distorted text.
“Software has gotten really good at labeling photos,” said Kevin Gosschalk, the founder and CEO of Arkose
Labs, which designs what it calls “prevention solutions”, including captchas. “So now enters a new era of captchas
— logic- based.”
Arkose Labs employs a staff of artists, former game designers and experts to create some of the more
demanding tasks appearing during logins. Arkose says that even its hardest challenges have a first- time solve rate
of 94.6%. Not all of its ideas make the cut. The team once developed a Space Invaders- style game for users to get
through, but it was too hard for humans to complete on their first try.
32. What does the author think of captchas?
A. They are becoming more interesting. B. They are getting more demanding.
C. They are key to safe online activities. D. They are relatively easy for journalists.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly stress about captchas?
A. Their functions. B. Their purposes.
C. Their disadvantages. D. Their effects.
34. What is a notable feature of Arkose Labs’ new captchas?
A. They focus on photo labeling. B. They have popular artistic designs.
C. They require logic- based problem- solving. D. They allow distorted text recognition.
35. What is the example of the Space Invaders- style game used to show?
A. An undesired result from Arkose’s design.
.
B Arkose’s role in leading the industry.C. The hardest challenge facing Arkose.
D. Arkose’s speed in upgrading its products.

You might have heard that keeping a journal is a great way to record your thoughts and understand your
emotions. Typical journaling involves only writing. ____36____ And because there are so many ways to express
yourself in an art journal, it’s a wonderful creative outlet for both beginners and more experienced creatives.
The focus on self- expression is where an art journal differs from a sketchbook (素描本). A sketchbook can
have elements of art journaling, particularly when it comes to drawing or painting.____37____
Art journaling is a way to practice self- care. It encourages you to take a little time for yourself— even if it’s
just for 15minutes a day. When you look back at what you’ve written or drawn, you can gain valuable insight into
the challenges in your life. The point of creating a visual journal is not to make every page a masterpiece.
____38____ Remember, it’s just for you!
Art journaling is completely customizable (可定制的)depending on your skills and interests. Many people
choose to use mixed media and decorate their pages with drawing and painting materials. ____39____ The most
important thing when beginning your art journal, however, is selecting the right book.
____40____ Size is one. If you enjoy making large drawing, for instance, then a bigger book might be best.
Art journals look great when you feel the page, so whatever size you choose, make sure it combines well with the
way you like to work. Another characteristic to think about is the type of pages in the book. Since it’s a good
chance you’ll be using mixed media, select a book whose paper can handle both drawing and painting.
A. Also, you become aware of your style.
B. There are many considerations when it comes to picking your journal book.
C. This way, you’ll save not only your money, but also your nerves.
D. Others prefer sticking with a single medium that they’re comfortable with.
E. But for those who are more visually- minded, an art journal is a great alternative.
F. But a sketchbook doesn’t have to include imagery that relates to your inner thoughts.
G. You simply need to enjoy the act of creating something without worrying about if it looks good.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Little Lucy lived in a very poor part of a big city. One day, her class teacher talked about gifts and how it is
much more important to give them than to receive them. She said that she hoped all the boys and girls in the class
would remember to give something, however small, to their loved ones to show how much they loved them.
Afterward Lucy thought a good deal about what the teacher had said and wondered how she could afford to
give anything to anybody. Her daddy gave her $1 a week for pocket money, and that didn’t go very far these days.
Somehow, she thought, she would try to buy something for Mother, and Daddy, and brother, and sister, but, oh,
dear, there was Grandma, too! What could she do about Grandma?
The next time she went to class she asked the teacher if it would be acceptable to give Grandma just a card.
The teacher said Grandma would be happy to receive the smallest thing if it was given in love. So Lucy began
searching for a card for Grandma that wouldn’t cost too much. One day she saw it. The very one! It had a picture of
a cat on it, and Lucy remembered that Grandma had just lost her old tabby cat (斑猫) that she had loved so much.
So she bought the card, paying one whole week’s pocket money for it.
On the day Lucy gave Grandma the card, she was overjoyed to see how pleased Grandma was. She said the
picture of the cat was just like her own precious tabby. This gave Lucy an idea. “Someday,” she said to herself, “I’ll
buy my granny a real cat. Just think how happy she’ll be then!”
She found a pet shop and asked how much a real cat would cost. “Twenty dollars.” said the man. Lucy’s face
fell. Twenty dollars! How in the world would she ever get $20? That would take all her pocket money for 20 weeks
— five whole months!
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As she stood on the street, Lucy felt something brushing her leg.
