When Ariel Cordova rode her bike to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York, last November, she
planned to go hiking and bird-watching. A mile into her walk, she spotted a beautiful female mute swan near the
water’s edge. Cordova, 30, who had worked at the Wild Bird Fund recovery center, knew that mute swans can be
aggressive (侵略性的). But as she approached this one, it didn’t move.
She was certain that the bird needed medical attention. Cordova draped (披,悬挂) her jacket over the bird’s
head to keep it calm, carefully picked it up, and held it gently in her arms. She was wondering how to transport a
17-pound swan on her bike to the recovery center when, luckily, some confused strangers driving by offered her, her
bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station. Cordova called the recovery center on the way, and Tristan, an
animal care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove the bird, the bike, and the rescuer to the facility
(场所). There, staff members determined that the swan might have lead (铅) poisoning. Sadly, even with all that
tender loving care, the swan got contracted, which caused her passed away two months after being rescued.
It’s a disappointing ending, but the real story is just how far some people are willing to go to save a swan in the
big city. In all, Cordova traveled two hours by foot, car, and subway. “That’s the perfect summary of who she is,”
says Tristan.

Do you know how to cycle? It is a skill that, once learned, is never forgotten. For the majority of us, the art of
balancing on two wheels was mastered during our childhood. Many still wear helmets, put feet on the pedals, and
take a ride around the streets. And in recent years, cycling has become more and more popular. What attracts people
to ride their bikes once again?
Cycling offers a lot of advantages that affect both our physical and mental health. For example, regular cycling
的
can improve the function of our cardiovascular (心血管 )system, assist in the burning of extra body fat and
strengthen our leg muscles. A long ride in the countryside helps us to clear our mind easily.Riding a bike is a smart choice for getting to work, shopping, or sightseeing. You can save money that you would
otherwise spend on fuels and fares. Unlike cars that struggle with parking, bikes can be easily locked up. Then, on
the train, there are chances at stations and other people speaking loudly on their phones. Cyclists face neither of these
problems. And if we’re worried about safety, there are cycle lanes in many cities, or we can wear light-colored clothes
to improve our safety when cycling on the roads.
Cycling can also be good for the environment. It cuts our carbon footprint, which means we make less pollution.
It’s great for our planet and keeps the air clean around us. When we ride bikes, we don’t use fuel like cars do, and
that’s really good for our environment.
Therefore, more and more people choose to ride for many benefits such as improving their health, easily going
to work, saving money, protecting the environment, or a combination of these factors.
12. When do most people learn to ride?
A. In their free time. B. After their retirement.
C. At their young ages. D. During their adulthood.
13. Which of the following best describes cycling?
A. It is a good way to save money.
B. It is a great idea to relax cyclists.
.
C It is dangerous to cycle on the roads.
D. It is difficult to find a place park the bike.
14. How does cycling affect the environment?
A. Consumes more fuels. B. Increases air pollution.
C. Causes fewer accidents. D. Reduces carbon footprint.
15. In which section of a magazine may this text appear?
A. Sports & Health. B. Travel & Culture.
C. Science & Technology. D. Animals & Environment.

Tionae Thomas couldn’t be prouder of her 14-year-old daughter. Plenty of people overlooked a boy sitting
alone under a tree in a shopping center parking lot. But not Tionae’s daughter. The 14-year-old girl stepped in to
help the stranded(滞留) boy. And the Internet is applauding this girl for her kindness!
Tionae and her daughter were on the way home. But as they passed a shopping center, Tionae’s daughter
begged her to pull over. She’d noticed a boy who looked like he was most likely in elementary school. He sat all
alone under a tree in a small island within the parking lot.
“It’s too hot, mama,” the girl told her mom.
So, Tionae pulled over and her daughter got out, asking the stranded boy where his parents were. But the boy
didn’t know.
The kind girl let the stranded boy use her cell phone to give his dad a call. Then she suggested he move from
his spot under the tree to the front of a nearby Rite Aid. She told him it would be safer. At the same time, the girl
left him her phone number and told him that he could call her if necessary.
Getting back into the car with her mom, the girl asked to wait to make sure the stranded boy got picked up.
She hated the idea of leaving him alone. And because of the warmer temperatures, she wanted to get him some
water.
Plenty of others must have noticed the boy. Maybe they left him alone because they didn’t want to disturb or scare
him. Maybe they just thought someone else would do something. But Tionae’s daughter was the only one to step in
and help.Para 1: Two days later, the girl received the boy’s call.
