I was really nervous about English class this year because I was an eleventh grader taking a twelfth grade
class. I knew that I wouldn’t know anyone in the class, and that scared me a little. But since I didn’t know anyone, I
had the chance to do something I love almost as much as socializing-people watching.
One of the most interesting girls in the class sat directly behind me. She was always laughing and talking, and
she just seemed so happy. She was friendly, too — she was one of the very few people in the class who made any
attempt to acknowledge me. She was one of those people you just liked, even if you didn’t really know her.
At the end of the year, we were assigned a big project. It was a very open-ended project, where the instructions
were basically to read something, then read or watch something else that related to it, and then come up with a class
presentation based on what you learned. The presentations were spread out over the last month of school, and
because everyone had chosen such different topics and different ways to present those topics, we had some of the
most interesting and varied presentations I’ve ever watched.
The girl behind me presented on one of the last days. She got up in front of the class, and told everyone how
she had read about eating disorders, because she herself had struggled with one. Since it would have been too
difficult for her to talk to us about it directly, she and a friend had made a movie, where they interviewed each other
about their eating disorders, how they had felt while they were struggling with them, and how they had overcome
them.

Living in the shadow of my two elder sisters at college who already had their lives planned out since they were
little, I was always undecided about everything. As a teenager, I was fickle (反复无常的). I would like one thing
for a week and then hate it the next. But I was constantly searching for the beginning of the rainbow. Changing my
dream from a vet to an astronaut, I thought there were various options available to me. However, my parents would
shake their heads and repeatedly asked me such questions as, “Why can’t you be more like your sisters? What are
you going to do with your life? Aren’t you interested in anything at all?” After a couple of shrugs (耸肩), my
parents usually stopped talking. I was not sure if they gave up or anticipated my dull reactions. I often responded, “I
couldn’t answer all of your questions now.”
Actually, my parents just had high expectations that never seemed to be fulfilled. Plus, like other parents, they
just wanted to give the best to me and expected me to achieve success. The arguments with my parents seemed
childish. One day, my mother made her thoughts clear, “Your grades aren’t high enough. No schools are going to
want you, dear. We didn’t pay so much money for nothing.” Hesitating for a while, I said, “No matter what you say,
I believe I will enter a good college.” Still, I let my emotions control myself.
Certainly, I had never planned not to go to college. After another debate with my mom, I decided to make a
change. No longer would I sit back and let my parents mistake me for a bad boy. It was time to take action.
I knew it was a crucial year at high school. Releasing my feelings, I began to collect all the knowledge I had
learned and review it with all my heart. I didn’t argue with my parents any more, but instead turned to my sisters
for help and tried my best to study. Finally, I took the national college entrance examination with ease and
confidence.

Mr. Tai, the teacher in charge of athletics at SUKK Temarah, had just celebrated his 58th birthday — an age at
which many would think seriously of retiring. However, it was not so with Mr. Tai. He had an outstanding record of
athletic achievements in leading the school’s sports team. Some of the students he had coached had become
national runners or even coaches themselves. The school board agreed he continued to work as they did not want to
lose the services of someone who had successfully led the school athletics team to the finals of the National
Athletics Championships.
In the year before, however, the school team did not get as many medals in the National Athletics
Championships as expected. Mr. Tai’s hopes were fired this year by two promising star athletics, Farid and Hassan,
who happened to be twins.
In the school’s sports meet, Farid broke the school’s twenty-year record for the 100 metres event. His brother,
Hassan, was just a second behind. Since Hassan had an ankle injury, Mr. Tai decided to submit only Farid’s name to
the finals of the National Athletics Championships. On the day he submitted the results of the best runner in the
school, he mistakenly wrote Hassan’s name instead. When Mr. Tai received the list of the finalists in the 100 metres event in the National Athletics Championships,
he realized his mistake. However, it was too late to inform the sports secretariat (秘书处). Besides, pride also did
not allow him to admit his mistake to Farid. He decided to inform his brother, Hassan, and start training him in the
final preparations for this event. When Farid learned that he was not a finalist, he could not believe his ears. Even
though he was glad that his brother had qualified, he was quite disappointed. To make matters worse, Mr. Tai did
not give him any reasons for his not being allowed to take part in the finals. Realizing that his hopes for athletic
glory were destroyed, Farid felt extremely sad.

Amanda lived in a big modern city. Due to the high-speed development of economy, families from different
backgrounds came here to find a better life. Amanda’s classmate and friend, Rama, was from one of those families.
One day after school, Amanda and Rama were chatting and Rama mentioned how much she missed her friends
and hometown. “It is hard to leave,” Rama sighed, “but my family needed to be somewhere that is easier to make a
living. Holding Rama’s hands, Amanda encouraged her to share more and she knew Rama loved to sing and dance
with her friends back in her hometown.
After learning about Rama’s story, Amanda started to notice more students like Rama in her school. For thefirst time she realized that those students looked sad in their eyes. Sometimes because of their different accents,
they couldn’t communicate well with others, which made them always sit or stand silently at the back of the
classroom.
“They are having a hard time, we should show them kindness and love!” she told her mother one day. Amanda
asked her mother what she could do to help make them feel welcome. Amanda’s mother suggested, “What about
using art? Maybe it will be easier to communicate through art.” Amanda thought for a while and nodded. Like her
friend Rama, Amanda loved all forms of art, like painting, singing, dancing, and performing, through which she
could tell different stories about her family, and her life.
The next day, Amanda went to the Activity Center in her school and proposed her plan of an art show. The
officer thought it a great idea. Inspired and excited, Amanda set about her plan with several friends. At the Activity
Center they filled a room with paper, paint and pencils. They even made a small stage! Everything ready, they
invited all the new students in her school and Amanda encouraged them to share something special about their
hometown in any art form. To Amanda’s surprise, no one responded.

One of the most difficult realities about the teaching profession is that we seldom know if we have made a
difference. When I become discouraged about my job, my students or myself, I often think back to one particularday of my teaching career.
My first year of teaching was almost over. I taught junior English at Milford High School on a one-year
contract. I had a bright group of students and I was grateful for that. However, as the end of the school year drew to
a close, my students continually asked if the regular teacher would be returning. I tried to respond with little
emotion. Deep down, though, I was more bothered by leaving than I admitted.
Finally, the day came to give my last final exam. I passed the office before the bell rang and saw a couple of
the students from my class, and I thought how difficult saying good-bye would be. They were a group with whom I
could joke, have fun and share ideas. Teaching them was a pleasure, and we all had learned a lot that year. But, as
successful students do, they were moving on to twelfth grade, and I doubted they would remember much about me
after a few more years of their academic careers and busy lives.
Just about this time I was on hall duty outside my classroom, and I noticed the crowds thinning out and
classroom doors shutting. I looked in my room to find only two students in attendance. When I commented that it
was awfully strange that their classmates were so late, they agreed and then quickly asked to get a drink outside.
The hallway was awfully quiet. I walked down the hall several times to see if anyone was coming. Suddenly, I
heard footsteps coming down the hall. I was annoyed that after such a great year with these kids, I would — on
their last day with me — have to give them a lecture about responsibility.

When I was in seventh grade, my parents paid forty dollars a week for a tutor to come to my house and help
me with math, which ended up raising my mark from fifty to fifty-five. OK, maybe it was partly my fault. Maybe I
should have spent less time worrying about that important geography assignment and more time on math. But math
is a tricky thing. And sitting down in a chair to work on confusing algebraic equations(代数方程) for two hours is a
slow and painful process. Besides, people around tend to ask. “How’s your math this time?”
So I became afraid of anything to do with numbers. The thought of a teacher picking on me in class was
terrifying. The red marking was like a component in a horror movie. It only got worse in ninth grade. Every report
card I ever received was delivered with the comment: “Victoria needs to ask for assistance in class.” But I couldn’t
tell my teachers the real reason why I didn’t ask for help: I didn’t want to be a fool. Every question I had was, in my
opinion at the time, something that the entire class could understand but I couldn’t. So instead, I adopted the
mindset of not caring about anything and concluding that everything would work out in the end.
It didn’t. After spending a semester not caring about homework and not trying on tests, still afraid of math and
convinced that I would never succeed, my math teacher called one summer morning to tell me I would spend the
next three weeks at school redoing the entire course so I could pass.
This news was met with sudden tears, and a loud “this can’t be happening to me!” That’s when it hit me. Why
was I scared of a bunch of numbers, anyway? Why did I barely study for tests because I had convinced myself I
would never do well? Who was this unconfident student and what happened to that determined and confident
teenager I had once been?

LESSONS LEARNED OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Mr. Gray was my history teacher in tenth grade. I couldn’t tell what kind of history he taught for two reasons:
one, I never liked history, and two, my body was in class, but my mind wasn’t. Mr. Gray wasn’t the teacher who
offered retakes (补考) on tests; he did so much more for me than that. He offered me a pair of ears and a shoulder
to cry on.
Before Mr. Gray came along, one major event was taking place in my life. My mom told me she wanted to
divorce my dad. Why then? I didn’t understand. I barricaded (筑起壁垒) myself in my basement bedroom, listening
to angry music and sleeping. I fell into a depression and my grades were falling. Then there was Mr. Gray.
I sat against a brick wall outside the library, knees pulled into my chest, head down, surrounded by my noisy
friends that I was slowly distancing myself from, when I heard his voice: “Ever feel like you’re a fire hydrant (消防
栓) and every dog in the neighborhood is stopping by to visit you?” I picked my head up and then I saw Mr. Gray.
I had heard him use this line in the classroom a few times before, when it looked like a kid was having a bad
day. It usually aroused a laugh and ended there. This time was different though — he was waiting for an answer.
Next thing I knew I was following him into the library.
We sat amongst the shelves of the mostly empty library for the rest of lunchtime. I don’t remember much
about that first conversation other than the unconditional promise he made me of lending a pair of ears and a
shoulder to cry on. What made him such a special teacher was that he saw that I was struggling and reached out to
me outside of the classroom.

An A for Mrs. B
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project.
In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the
requests, Mrs. B.informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know
the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Only a few people behaved normally in
the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously waited for the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. B called
for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So, I’m in
group three,I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included.
There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How
could I face being in that group—the boy who rarely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts
that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my
friends.
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B.She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I wasdetermined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why. . . ?” I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs
you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this assignment. Only you can help them.”
I was stunned. I was confused. I was amazed. She had seen something in me I hadn’t seen.
“Will you help them?” she asked.
I stood straighter. “Yes,” I replied. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. I had committed.

Mr. Birkway was my English teacher, and when I met him on that first day in my new school, I didn’t know
what to make of him. He was one of those energetic teachers who loved his subject half to death and walked about
the room dramatically, waving his arms and patting (轻拍) people on the back.
He said, “Brilliant!” and “Wonderful!”and “Terrific!” He was quite tall and slim, and his bushy black hair
made him look like a wild native at times. He had deep brown cow eyes that sparkled (闪耀) all over the place, andwhen he turned these eyes on you, you felt as if his whole purpose in life was to stand there and listen to you, and
you alone.
Midway through the first class, Mr. Birkway asked if we had our summer journals. I hadn’t a clue as to what
he was talking about. Some of the other students started nodding like crazy, and Mr. Birkway spread out his arms
and said, “Wonderful!” He received the journals excitedly. “Thank you,” he said to each journal-giver.
I was extremely worried. I had no journal.
When he got to Beth Ann’s desk, Mr. Birkway lifted up her journal and looked inside. “I didn’t write much,”
Ann said. “In fact, I can hardly remember what I wrote about at all.”
“Don’t worry about it too much,” Mr. Birkway said with a smile. “Next time, try writing about something you
like-a place, a room, a person. Just write whatever comes to mind.” Then he moved on.
On top of Mary Lou’s desk were six journals. Mr. Birkway stood open-mouthed and said, “Is it — can it be —
Shakespeare?” He counted the journals. “Six! Brilliant!”
Christy and Megan, two girls who had their own club called the GGP (whatever that meant), were whispering
over on the other side of the room and casting disapproving looks in Mary Lou’s direction. Mary Lou kept her hand
on top of the journals as Mr. Birkway reached for them. In a low voice she said, “I don’t want you to read them.”

I had been acting in school for a few years. When I got a rough role in a play, I, only a junior in my high
school, was excited that my inspiring drama teacher and director had trusted me with the part.
We had little time to prepare and I would never forget reading the lines for the first time. At first the dialogue
was lively, but then it became quite long and boring. To my surprise, my character had one disrespectful line that
complained about his bad luck. I had never said something like that on stage before. Uncomfortable as I felt about
it, I had never thought of making myself heard to make a change. I was weak, went silent, and accepted the line as
it was.
At our first rehearsal (彩排), I whispered, the line and hoped with so many distractions on stage that the
director wouldn’t notice. Luckily, she didn’t. Over three wild weeks of rehearsals, I convinced myself that I could
keep faking it. Then, when the curtain finally rose with an audience, maybe I would feel fine about saying the line
just once as loudly as I could.
On the night of the open dress rehearsal, I was nervous to see an old couple, the Ehlers, seated in the hall.
They were close friends of our family and I had no idea they would be there. When the big moment arrived, with
nervousness racing through my body, I went for it. I remember the moment quite clearly. Where I stood. How it
sounded. How I felt.
After the show, the Ehlers met me with cheers, a warm hug, and some brief dialogue of their own. While
talking with them, I was overwhelmed by mixed feelings of regret and shame.
