Ellie 25 October 7.42 p.m.
A few weeks ago a school inspector observed my class. I gave him my chair
and he went to the back of the classroom. I was really nervous but my students
were great: they weren't noisy, they paid attention, they didn't shout and they put
their hands up to ask questions. After a while I asked them to do some pair
work and I sat down. Unfortunately, I forgot my chair wasn't in its usual place
and I fell on the floor!

Working as a part-time assistant in a shop is a way for young people to earn some extra
money. For me, it is more than twenty dollars per hour.
Like other eighteen-year-old girls, I chose to work in a clothing shop. On the first day, I was
trained to fold and organize platform after platform of clothes. The work didn’t seem easy to me
because everything had to be done in an accurate way. I felt a little impatient because I couldn’t教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
get it right the first couple of times. The manager told me not to be impatient and taught me skills
on how to finish the work well. After hundreds of tries, I had the clothes folded perfectly. Then it
took me thirty minutes to get them all looking uniform. Now, I fold and organize clothes in the
shop every day, and I am able to do them well. Through this experience, I’ve learned patience can
help me in the work.
Helping customers and connecting with them are the things I love
most in the shop. About three weeks ago, I helped an old lady
who was looking for a special dress. She told me exactly what she
was picturing—a blue dress with long sleeves and a lace neck. We
didn’t have any such dress, and when I explained that to her, she
wasn’t very happy. Instead of getting impatient, I tried getting to learn about her interest first. We
shared our love of the fashion show. I also asked her what the dress was for, so I could help her
get the clothes she liked. Everything I did worked. She found other items she liked and finally
bought some new blouses and jeans worth of $300. This experience has taught me how to meet
customers’ needs.
I’ve experienced frustrations and challenges in the work. To do well, I must learn to deal
with them. The work experience changed me a lot and helped me in other aspects of my life as
well.

Remember to Say Thank You
I'm here to talk to you about the importance of praise, admiration and thank you, and let them be教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
specific (具体的) and genuine (真诚的).
And the way I got interested in this was, I noticed in myself when I was growing up, and until
about a few years ago, that I would want to say thank you to someone, I would want to praise
them, I would want to take in their praise of me and I’d just stop it. And I asked myself, why? I
felt shy. I felt embarrassed. And then my question became, am I the only one who does this? So, I
decided to make a survey.
I'm fortunate enough to work in a hospital, so I can see people who are facing life and death. One
man’s biggest wound is his father died without ever saying he was proud of him. But then, he
heard from all the family and friends that the father told everybody else that he was proud of his
son, but he never told the son. It’s because he didn’t know that his son needed to hear it.
So, my question is, why don’t we ask for the things that we need? I know a gentleman called Tony,
married for 25 years, who would like to hear his wife say, “Thank you for being the breadwinner
so I can stay home with the kids," but doesn’t ask.
We’d like to win praise but it really has to be specific and genuine. I know a woman. She's good at
this. She, once a week, meets with her husband and says “I’d really like you to thank me for all
these things I did in the house and with the kids.” And he goes, “Oh, this is great, this is great.”
But does his praise really work?
And a friend of mine, April, who I’ve had since kindergarten, thanks her children for doing some
cleaning. And she said, “Why wouldn’t I thank it, even though they’re supposed to do it? By the
way, will the children be pleased with their mother’s thanks?
So, be honest about the praise that you need to hear. What do you need to hear? Go home to your
family member -- go and ask him/her, what does he/she need? And then help the people around
you.
Thank you for being here, just showing up and changing the world with your ideas.

Zoe Chambers was a successful PR (Public Relations) consultant (顾问) and life was going
well – she had a great job, a beautiful flat and a busy life in London. Then one evening in June last
year, she received a text message telling her she was out of work. “The first two weeks were the
most difficult to live through,” she said. “After everything I’d done for the company, they fired me
by text! I was so angry and I just didn’t feel like looking for another job. I hated everything about
the city and my life.”
Then, Zoe received an invitation from an old schoolfriend, Kathy, to come and stay. Kathy
and her husband, Huw, had just bought a farm in Swansea of Wales. Zoe jumped at the chance to
spend a weekend away from London, and now, ten months later, she is still on the farm.
“The moment I arrived at Kathy’s farm, I loved it and I knew I wanted to stay,” said Zoe.
“Everything about my past life suddenly seemed meaningless.”
Zoe has been working on the farm since October of last year and says she has no regrets. “It’s
a hard life, physically very tiring,” she says. “In London I was stressed and often mentally
exhausted (精神疲惫). But this is a good, healthy tiredness. Here, all I need to put me in a good
mood (情绪) is a hot bath and one of Kathy’s wonderful dinners.”
Zoe says she has never felt bored on the farm. Every day brings a new experience. Kathy has
been teaching her how to ride a horse and she has learnt to drive a tractor (拖拉机). Since
Christmas, she has been helping with the lambing – watching a lamb being born is unbelievable,
she says. “It’s one of the most moving experiences I’ve ever had. I c a n never go back to city life

Far away across the sea lies a country called Holland. Holland is a very low country, and it lies
close to the ocean. Nothing but the strong dykes (堤坝) keep the angry waves away from the very
doors of the houses in Holland. People must carefully guard the strong sea walls. They know that
their homes and their lives would be in danger from the water of the sea if the dykes were broken.
One day, a little boy named Peter was playing in the garden by his home in Holland when his
mother called him. “Peter,” she said, “I want you to carry this basket of cheese to your
grandmother. Go straight upon your way, without playing. You must be back home before
supper.”
Peter took the basket that held the cheese, and went on his way. He did not stop to gather the
pretty flowers that grew by the wayside, nor to play with the boys who called to him from the
field. He did what he was told, and soon he reached his grandmother’s house.
It was already almost dark. He left his basket, gave his grandmother a kiss and left to go home.
His path lay beside the dyke. In the quiet evening air, he heard a sound which made his heartbeat
quick and fast. Peter knew the meaning of the fearful sound. It meant that ___83___.
Before morning, even before Peter could get men to help, the water would be pouring over the
land. What could a boy do? Quickly, he ran to the spot from which the water trickled (滴、淌).
He pushed his hand into the hole in the dyke. Then he called aloud for help. He listened. No
answer came to his call, but he could hear that the water was no longer dripping. It became dark.
He became too tired to call for help…
People found him in the morning, pale and faint, but bravely holding to his post. “He has saved us
all!” they said. “Thank God! He was a brave boy.”

Police in America have stepped up their search for a fifteen-year-old boy who went missing
three days ago in Dover, New Hampshire. This case has received great interest because it is said
that aliens visited when the boy disappeared.
Justin Foster, a high school student, was last seen on Friday night. That evening at 8 p.m.,
Justin's friends called him to play baseball. Witnesses (目击者)say they saw Justin
walking towards his house at 10:45 p.m. Justin's sister, Kelly, says she heard her
brother return home at about 11 p.m., but she didn't see him with her own eyes.
“I was on bed at that time. Suddenly I was woken up at midnight by a bright
light outside my window." Kelly said.
"I pulled back the curtains and saw a large spaceship flying outside. It had blue lights all
around it. Standing inside were lots of aliens. I was frightened!"
Kelly said that the spaceship then moved towards her brother's bedroom. "There was a flash
of light and I heard Justin shout, and then the UFO just disappeared. I’m sure the aliens took him
away. ”
Kelly then ran and woke up her mother. However, Mrs Foster thought that Kelly was having
a bad dream, so she sent her back to bed. Mr Foster was not home that night. When Justin did not
show up for lunch the next day, Mrs Foster became worried and told her husband to call the
police.
Some people in Dover also say that they saw aliens that night. "It's happened to me!” said
Mrs Smith. "The aliens took me aboard the UFO for research. Luckily, they sent me home without
any injuries. The whole experience was terrible! I haven't been sleeping well since I returned
home. I think Justin was taken away by them, too."
When asked about whether Justin was taken by aliens, Detective Peterson, who has taken
charge of the case, told reporters. "Sometimes people make up stories. There's really no hard proof
that aliens took him. So we are looking into other possibilities as well. We will not give up until
we find out what happened. "

“I’m Captain Carter Harrison. I’m here to visit Mrs. Melissa Harrison,”said Mr. Harrison
to the front desk. “Oh, Melissa has been asking about you all week. She is looking forward to
seeing you. Here is your visitor ID,” the receptionist said. “She is in Room 3417.”
The young man came to the door and slowly opened it. Inside, an
elderly woman lying in bed slowly opened her eyes. “Daddy,” she said
quietly.
“Oh! Melissa has aged so much since I last saw her a few months
ago!” Harrison thought to himself. Of course, a few months’ ship time
means that years have passed on Earth.
“How was your trip, Daddy? Did you bring me back anything?”
Melissa asked. She welcomed him home excitedly – just like a little girl. “Sure. Look at these – a
coin from Planet 8 and a diamond from Planet 173.” She smiled and nodded (点头示意) towards
her shelf. Hundreds of small stones and statues lay across its top. He placed the objects with the
rest of her collections.
Melissa was sleeping now. Harrison pulled a chair up to her bedside. Warm tears filled his
eyes. “I am sorry, Melissa,” he said softly, “Your grandparents brought you up to be a perfect
young woman, but I missed your first steps. I was asked to work as a captain for only two years.
However, we had lost so many men in the First Space War. I couldn’t just leave my soldiers. I
must help protect our planet.”
Harrison held her hand in silence for a long time. He knew this was possible the last time he
would see his daughter alive. It would be five years’ Earth time before he came back from space
again.
There would be another 30 years before he retired, Harrison thought. He would lose
hundreds of years of Earth time. And each time he returned, he would learn that his loved ones
had died and new ones had been born. Harrison thought for a moment and wrote her daughter a
note. It said, “ 83 ”. Then he kissed her and quietly left the room.
Outside, he caught an air taxi. He took a deep breath and climbed into his taxi.

Creative thinking isn’t just for art classes. Any time you try something
different to solve a problem, you’re being creative. In sports, that might mean
trying new moves to score a goal for your team. In engineering, that might mean

I was a freshman in college when I met the Whites. They were completely different from my
own family. Jane White and I became friends at school, and her family welcomed me like a long-
lost cousin.教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
In my family, it was always important to place blame (责备、责怪) when anything had
happened. From the time we were little, my sister, brothers and I told on (告发) each other. The
Whites, however, didn’t worry about who had done what. The beauty of this was driven home to
me the summer Jane died.
In July, the White sisters and I decided to take a car trip from their home in Florida to New
York. The two older sisters, Sarah and Jane were college students, and the youngest, Amy, had
recently turned 16. Proud of having a new driver’s license, Amy was excited about practicing her
driving on the trip.
The big sisters shared the driving of Sarah’s new car during the first part of the trip, but when
they reached less crowded areas, they let Amy take over. Amy got behind the wheel. She came to
a crossroads with a stop sign. No one would ever know whether she was nervous or just didn’t see
the sign, but Amy didn’t stop at the crossroads and a large truck ran into our car.
Jane was killed at once. I was slightly injured. The most difficult thing that I had ever done
was to call the Whites to tell them what happened. Painful as it was for me to lose a good friend, I
knew that it was far worse for them to lose a child.
When Mr. and Mrs. White arrived at the hospital, they found their two daughters sharing a
room. Sarah had a few cuts on her head; Amy’s leg was broken. They hugged all and cried tears of
sadness and of joy at seeing their daughters. They wiped away the girls’ tears and made a few
jokes at Amy as she learned to use her crutches (拐杖).
To both of their daughters, and especially to Amy, over and over they simply said,
“_____________________82_____________________.”
I was astonished. No blame. No accusations (控诉,指责).
Later, I asked the Whites why they never talked about the fact that Amy was driving and had
run a stop sign. Mr. White said, “Jane is gone and we miss her terribly. Nothing we say or do will
bring her back. But Amy has her whole life ahead of her. How can she lead a happy life if she
feels we blame her for her sister’s death?”
They were right. Amy graduated from the University and got married several years ago. She
is now a mother of two little girls of her own, the older named Jane.

Most of the time, our book review section focuses on a novel or a
short story. This month is a little different. Instead, How to Lie with
Statistics (统计数字) is a simple little book that teaches readers to tell
good and bad statistics.
At the heart of the book is a problem. Statistics provide a powerful
way to strengthen an argument or an opinion. Unfortunately, statistics
are also both easily misunderstood and controlled. That is a problem
because many people are not able to understand when numbers are
used to give wrong information. The easiest way to solve this
problem is to give people the ability to understand statistics.
How to Lie with Statistics tries to do just that. Often used as a textbook for math classes, it is
surprisingly easy to read and understand. It’s also very useful. Each of the books ten units focuses
on one way that people use statistics incorrectly or improperly.
How to Lie with Statistics has a light and fun tone. It teaches with both simple explanations and
fun examples. It includes a lot of cartoon pictures. Written in 1954, the book quickly became
popular. Despite its age, the examples in the book are still useful and easy to follow.
Readers should also be aware that this book isn't really a textbook. Although the book gives
important ideas about statistics, it doesn’t actually teach you math. The author, Darrel Huff,
wasn’t a mathematician (数学家). Instead, he was a journalist.
The book is a wonderful resource for readers. Traditionally, it has been used as an extra text for
students from many different subjects. It also proves useful for anyone who wants to develop their
critical thinking.

Eric was standing in front of a large grey house in the countryside. He had just been dropped
off by his mum, who left after telling him that he was going to spend the next twelve days there
with no TV, no mobile phone and — worse of all — no computer.
Suddenly, a man appeared at the entrance of the house. When he saw Eric, he went up to him
immediately. ‘You must be Eric. Welcome to the camp,’ said the man confidently. ‘I’m Tony, the
camp leader, but you will call me “Sir”. Now tell me why you’re here.’
Eric quickly replied, ‘My mum made me come!’ When Tony looked at him angrily and did
not say anything, Eric realized his mistake and added, ‘Sir!’
‘And do you know why your mother sent you here?’ asked Tony.
‘She thinks I spend too much time online. Sir,’ answered Eric. ‘It’s not just her opinion — it’s
the truth! Look at you — pale, unfit, and definitely not getting enough sleep. You’re here because
you think the virtual world is much better than the real world. But you’re wrong! The real world
has much more to offer. At the camp, you’re going to go hiking, rowing, rock-climbing and stay
outdoors most of the time,’ promised Tony.
Eric’s heart sank.
‘But it’s not going to be all fun and games,’ Tony continued. ‘We have rules here. If you
break them, you’ll get punished. But you won’t simply get detention (课后留校), and you can
forget about suspension (停学) — you’ll never be sent home early! Instead, you’ll clean the
toilets, wash the dishes or do an extra hour of exercise!’

Last year a boy of four was visiting the museum named Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich with his
family when he accidentally knocked the historical jug which was worth up to $2000 off a
window ledge (边缘).The jug was broken into 65 pieces and the boy was extremely upset. Later a
duty officer took many hours to repair it.
Is his family facing a heavy fine or needing to pay the repairs? No, the museum staff told the boy
that the jug had been fixed and that all was well now.
Yesterday a museum spokesman said: "We have received a call from the boy's mother who told us
the little boy and his family were delighted that the puzzle jug had been repaired but they wished
to remain anonymous (匿名的).”
Many people wrote letters to the editor to show their opinions. Below are some of them.
To the editor To the editor
The fault (错误)here lies with the museum. Parents do not teach children how to behave
They should have made sure that the jug was in these days. When we were children, we weren't
a secure place where it could not be knocked allowed to touch anything. It is not the
over. If they have people walking through the responsibility of the museum to put everything
museum, they should set up the exhibitions in into cabinets (展览柜). The aim of Christchurch
such a way that they are safe. They are being Mansion Museum is that the items are seen
careless with important historical artifacts (人 where they would have been in the house as in
the past. It is the PARENTS' responsibility to

How happy to read good news! A wonderful job was done repairing the jug, but even better is that
museum staff cared more about the boy than the jug. How kind that they would find simply to
comfort him. A little boy is worth a lot more than a jug. Hearing that all is fine will help the boy a
great deal, and make sure that he isn't left with bad feelings教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333

To Dream and to Create
According to Guinness World Records, Sydney girl Roxanne Downs is the
world's youngest magazine editor. She joined the It GiRL magazine in
2017 at the age of eight and has seen its readership grow continuously since
then. In a recent interview, the girl shared her story and offered some great
advice to young people.
Tell us about yourself and your role at It GiRL
I’m just an ordinary girl who likes to dream. I don’t like taking “no” for an answer. At It
GiRL I enjoy creating things and meeting new and exciting people.
So what is It GiRL? Can you introduce it to us?
Sure. It GiRL is a magazine that is based in Australia. It targets girls between the ages of 7
and 14. It offers games, puzzles, celebrity (名人) interviews, posters, jokes and many other
interesting things.
So how did you end up becoming an editor when you were only eight years old?
It GiRL was actually my favorite magazine. I was always coming home and sharing my
ideas for it with my parents. One of the magazine’s editors was a friend of my dad’s. Soon after he
came to know my story, I started to edit the magazine, interview famous people and attend
meetings with people five times my age.
Apart from your own, do you have a favorite record in Guinness World Records, or maybe
one that you want to break?教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
I'm the shortest girl in my whole class at school. So it may be fun to be the tallest person in
the world even if just for one day!
Do you have any advice for other young people?
Sure. If you know what your dream is, then chase it because a dream will not chase you back.
Just go for it because you never know what will happen unless you try.

A Backcountry Adventure
Sunday, July l0th
We are back from our three-day camping trip to the Shenandoah Valley. Mom and Dad had
been worried about our family’s reliance on computers, cell phones, and video games for
entertainment. So they decided a camping trip would help us overcome our dependence on
electronic devices. I knew we’d have to be resilient (适应力强的) in order to find a way to
survive without the comforts of home.
When you camp in the backcountry, you could only bring necessities that you needed to
survive, such as food, clothes, a camp stove, fuel, rope, a map, and a water container. At first, I
was surprised that we weren’t bringing bottled water with us. Then my heavy, overstuffed
backpack made me realize we’d soon use up any supply we could carry. Instead, we’d have to boil
water from nearby streams.
Our first day in the wild was out of expectation. We scrabbled up rocky paths and waded in
an ice-cold stream. Colourful wildflowers waved at us. I felt like I had stepped into a dreamy
painting. After all that exercise, an intense hunger burned in my stomach. Mom’s homemade教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
snacks had never tasted so good.
At night, the darkness seemed like a black curtain. I tried to read with an electric torch, but I
couldn’t concentrate. I finally fell asleep to a chorus of chirping crickets (蟋蟀鸣叫声中).
By our last day, I had blistered (长水泡的) feet and bug-bitten arms. I was ready to go home.
I couldn’t wait to play computer games. But a funny thing happened. Soon after I started my
favorite game, I lost the interest. So I walked outside to get some fresh air. Mom and Dad’s plan
had worked after all. Right then I decided to spend more time outdoors.

You are going to read a letter in a local newspaper.
Dear, sir/madam,
My name is Lucy Wong. I am a ten-year-old girl from Thailand. For the past year, I have
been helping my parents manage a motel (a small hotel) in Clifton, California. We have made it
our home, from the towels we carefully fold each and every day to the customers we call family. I
usually help the customers to check in and out at the front desk.
But the motel is not ours. It belongs to a man named Mr. Sung, who is unkind and selfish.
My parents think that working for Mr. Sung is the only way, but I don’t think so. At night, I
dreamed of a better life. I dreamed of owning a motel one day. Sadly, we have no money to buy a
motel of our own. What are the chances of actually winning a motel?
Well, maybe all our hopes and dreams don’t have to disappear. I am writing to you because
something has happened here at Maple Motel. Mr. Sung is selling the motel! He is selling it at a
low price because he’s tired of running a motel. We’re eager to buy it from him and we are
looking for investors (投资人). If you would like to invest, please let me know. You can contact教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
me at my telephone number – 6253908 any time.
It wouldn’t be a donation. You would be one of the owners in the future. Whenever a
customer comes to stay at the motel, part of the money would go to you. You might be asking
yourself, “Why should I invest in a motel from a 10-year-old? You can trust me because our
dreams will come true for three reasons:
1.I know what I’m doing. I know every corner of this motel like the back of my hand because
I’ve lived and worked here for almost a year.
2.I love what I’m doing. I’m very proud of my work. Every day, I check people in at the front
desk. The customers like me because I treat them like family members.
3.________________________________________________________________________
No investment is too small. Even if all you have are some extra pennies and nickels lying
around, we’ll take them. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours truly
Lucy Wong
