B While climbing the Great Wall is a once-in-a-lifetime dream for many, Jim Spear has taken it a step further, spending the last 18 years as a villager residing beneath this ancient wonder. “Never did I dream I would have the chance to visit the Great Wall, let alone live under it,” said 68-year-old Spear, a self-taught architect from the United States. Spear’s interest in China began during his college days. It deepened when he met Tang, a Chinese girl, in 1980, 第 4页/共 12页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司and they got married two years later. In 1986, he decided to drop out of his doctoral studies in Chinese politics at the University of California and moved to China “to get to the heart of things”. “I realized that if I became a scholar of China, based overseas, I wouldn’t be able to experience what was happening in China,” Spear said. In 1995, the couple secured a long-term rent of a traditional village farmhouse in Mutianyu and decided to make it their full-time home ten years later. Shortly after possessing full-time village life, he rented an abandoned schoolhouse and transformed it into a restaurant and art glass factory for a sustainable tourism business. He also turned a former factory into a hotel and helped renovate (翻新) over 20 households into restaurants. Besides, he explored other ways to support those residents in rural areas. “I want to do something for them,” Spear said. Spear’s designs reflect his natural talent for fusing (融合) traditional and modern elements, adopting the Great Wall style. However, Spear emphasized his approach involves creating designs and views “that echo (呼应) the Great Wall, not copy it”. In 2014, Spear received the Great Wall Friendship Award from the Beijing government. Talking about the future, Spear sees abundant possibilities in China, driven by significant domestic demand and a growing emphasis on preserving historic structures. 4. What do we know about Spear from the first two paragraphs? A. He likes to climb the Great Wall. B. He came to China when he was 18. C. He once dreamed of becoming a villager. D. He has lived beneath the Great Wall for years. 5. What’s Spear’s purpose of moving to China when he was in college? A. To see a real China. B. To marry a Chinese girl. C. To work as an architect. D. To study Chinese politics. 6. What is special about Spear’s designs? A. They are inspired by rural residents. B. They copy the style of the Great Wall. C. They have received a world-wide prize. D. They connect the past with the present. 7. What will Spear possibly plan to do in the future? A. Continue to engage in cultural exchange. B. Work for another award in structure preserving. C. Find more ways to support the rural residents. D. Conduct further study in Chinese historic structures. C A Florida teen is gaining national attention with her graduation speech and a basket of strawberries. “Care for some strawberries?” Brenda said at her graduation from Mulberry High School. After jokingly acknowledging there might not be enough, she went on, “These are no ordinary strawberries.” She held up a series of strawberries, revealing what each represents: sweat, dirt, aches, and pains. 第 5页/共 12页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司Brenda described herself as the daughter of two tireless farmers who immigrated from Mexico and spent most of their days working in fields of strawberries, blueberries, and cucumbers. “My motivation has been rooted in my immigrant culture.” Because of this, she chose to focus on that in her address. “Many students used to be ashamed of their upbringing but today, we’re proud of what makes us.” She explained how she grew up under poor conditions. “I’m motivated by my parents’ hands that lose feeling from laborious work. Despite the hot sun and body pains, they back me up heart and soul in my education, which weighs more strongly with me than anything else. I must work hard and succeed.” Brenda’s heading to Stanford University this fall. She also credited some of her outstanding achievements to her teacher Higgins, who helps immigrant students and the poor. Her speech has been viewed by thousands online. “Hearing it touched other people’s hearts who said they understood my message, I’m struck the same.” Brenda said later. The principal of Mulberry High School, Michael Young, was one member of the audience getting emotional. “The speech was very powerful—her fruit did help paint a good picture of things she wanted to convey,” Young said. As for her message to young people struggling, Brenda said, “Past circumstances aren’t in charge of your future. If you’re from a poor family, use every resource and try to better yourself. You’re the author of your story.” 8. Why did Brenda bring strawberries to her graduation? A. To share her home — grown fruit. B. To show hardship her parents faced. C. To better illustrate her speech’s topic. D. To explain the importance of motivators. 9. What affected Brenda most in terms of her academic success? A. Help from her teacher. B. Her life experience. C. Her native culture. D. Support from her parents. 10. How did Brenda feel about the viewers’ response online? A. Proud. B. Sympathetic. C. Moved. D. Embarrassed. 11. What did Brenda convey to the young? A. Life is what you make it. B. Every cloud has a silver lining. C. Everyone deserves a good life story. D. Resources in hand decide your future. D Having a glass of wine with dinner every night has been regarded as a relatively harmless way to relax. However, a recent study suggests that there may be no “safe” limit for alcohol and that not drinking at all is the best way to protect your heart. 第 6页/共 12页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司The researchers examined data from seven international studies on drinking and high blood pressure, involving over 19,000 people from the US, Korea and Japan. The participants were asked how much alcohol they drank each day, and this was compared with their blood pressure readings over a follow-up period averaging five years. Blood pressure increased as people aged, but the most rapid increases were seen in heavy drinkers, defined as those who drank about three glasses of wine per day. The researchers said they found that people drinking at lower levels also saw a significant increase in blood pressure over time, compared with those who were teetotal . There has been fierce debate over whether moderate (适量的) alcohol consumption can be beneficial to health, with some studies linking wine and lower rates of heart disease. However, this new study supports the idea that even small amounts of alcohol can be harmful to the heart. Marco Vinceti, lead author of the study and a professor at Boston University, said, “We were somewhat surprised to see that consuming an already low level of alcohol was also linked to higher blood pressure changes over time compared with no consumption — although far less than the blood pressure increase seen in heavy drinkers. That means moderate alcohol consumption isn’t a beneficial choice at all.” High blood pressure puts a burden on blood vessels, the heart, and other organs, such as the brain, kidneys and eyes, and can lead to a number of serious health problems including heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia. Alcohol is certainly not the only driver of increases in blood pressure. However, the findings confirm it contributes in a meaningful way. Limiting alcohol intake is probably not enough — it’s better to avoid it. 12 How did the researchers arrive at their findings? A. They analyzed data from several studies. B. They tracked 190,000 people for over five years. C. They made observations in a controlled lab setting. D. They carried out some experiments nationwide only. 13. What does the underlined word “teetotal” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Old. B. Non-drinking. C. Healthy. D. Addicted. 14. What is paragraph 6 mainly about? A. The cause of high blood pressure. B. The harm of high blood pressure. C Common serious health problems. D. The terrible results of heart attacks. 15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? 第 7页/共 12页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司A. To prove a glass of wine every night is beneficial. B. To recommend a relatively harmless way to relax. C. To urge people to stay away from alcohol completely. D. To show moderate alcohol consumption is well received. 第二节(每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We all know that studying is boring. When she was a child, what she liked to do most was watch the blue sky and enjoy birds flying freely in the sky. She always imagined that some day she could also fly in the sky like a bird. When Jane was in the fourth grade, one day, her teacher asked them to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and wrote that she dreamed to become an airline pilot in the future. She thought that she did a great job because she expressed her real idea successfully. However, to her surprise, her paper came back with an “F” on it. The teacher told her it was nothing but a “fairy tale”, which could never become true. Jenny felt completely disappointed and sad. In her heart, she didn't want to accept that a girl couldn't become a pilot. But as the years went by, Jenny was beaten down by the discouragement again and again from people around her. “Girls can't become airline pilots; never have, never will. You're crazy.” Finally, Jenny gave up her dream. However when Jenny studied in her senior year of high school, she met an English teacher called Marsha, who was a strict teacher with high standards but very kind. She often inspired her students to do something meaningful in the future.
