itwas all about Myanmar. The next year, it was Sri Lanka. So what place is everyone talking about
now? It is Antarctica (南极洲),which is known to be the coldest, driest and windiest place
on earth.
Last year, I had the pleasure of visiting the Antarctic. I traveled there on an ice-breaker.
There
were 111 other tourists on board, including 11 Antarctic experts. I didn' t enjoy the trip at all at
the
beginning. For a start, there was a lecture (讲课) on board, and our 48-hour journey was
spent listening to introductions on the Antarctic, environmental protection and our safety
problems.
However, from the moment we got on the ship, our responsibility (责任) to this far-away
area was explained. There were rules to follow, and breaking them would not be allowed. We
understood that we all had a role to play in keeping Antarctica the way it was.
First, our coats would be checked by the experts. Each time we got on and off the ship, we
would wash and disinfect (给....消毒) our boots. Also, there would be no eating on land.
Finally, we weren’t allowed to take anything away other than photographs.
And you know what? None of these rules is hard to follow, because once you reach this
beautiful place, all you want is to feel and protect it. By day, we were guided by the lovely
experts, who explained penguins' behavior and talked to us about seals. Their love for the
area and their knowledge were inspiring and thanks to them, we learned a lot about the wildlife
in Antarctica and that we were destroying (破坏) the bottom of the food chain by fishing the
main food supply (食物供应) in the Southern Sea, which had caused the decline (减少)
in penguin, seal
and whale populations.
I came back with a wealth of knowledge that I knew 1 couldn' t get anywhere else.
