I vibe coded an app. This is what I learnt about AI我用“氛围编程”（vibe coding）开发了一款应用。这是我对人工智能的感悟

I spent about $200 and eight hours to build a “to-do list” app, so I could avoid zooming in on a spreadsheet on my phone. I love it but it has limits.我花了大约 200 美元和八个小时构建了一个“待办事项”应用，这样我就不必在手机上费力放大电子表格了。我很喜欢它，但它也有局限性。

There’s a certain type of person who uses spreadsheets to track their exercise, diet, finances and, to the horror of the spontaneous, holidays.有那么一类人，他们用电子表格来追踪自己的锻炼、饮食、财务状况，以及——让那些随性的人感到惊恐的是——假期安排。

The problem is that on a mobile phone spreadsheets are fiddly. This means many of my most nicely constructed documents suffer neglect. I use the technology daily at work: as a glorified grammar checker, to suggest ideas, and for other low-level assistance. AI is useful for journalists because we know how to deal with its potential to halluciate. The basic reporting process involves verifying facts against primary sources so checking AI output is second nature. After seeing an ad for an online tool called Rork, which promised to help me create an Apple mobile app with a few clicks, I pitched the idea of vibe coding an app to assess what it might mean for the future of work.在看到一款名为 Rork 的在线工具广告后，它承诺只需点击几下就能帮我创建一个苹果移动应用，我便提出了用“氛围编程”开发一款应用的想法，以此评估这对未来工作意味着什么。

I’m generally sceptical of AI spruikers who warn that roles such as programmers, accountants, lawyers and journalists will soon be fully automated by the technology. For my purposes at least, Rork, the AI platform, delivered. I have a task manager app published to Apple’s TestFlight beta platform. It’s also obvious the exercise is far below the actual job of a paid software developer. They are usually figuring out how to add or tweak code in vast existing codebases without breaking anything as opposed to writing new code. My first 10 minutes creating the app involved working out what I wanted. I then made some dummy task data in a spreadsheet and wrote this prompt: “I’d like to build a premium looking Apple app that provides To Do functionality. It should have a Tasks function and a Projects function and toggle between work and home tasks and projects. Sort both by most recently due, hide done tasks. Over the next dozen prompts I asked the AI to tweak the design, add filters and create an export and import function. When I wanted security recommendations, it suggested three options. I asked it to do the best one. My testing was sloppy, inconsistent and limited. I found issues such as overdue items being hidden and the Kanban project layout being fiddly. I asked the system to fix each problem. It would think a bit, provide me with an explanation I mostly didn’t read about the issue. I love my app – a glorified version of my personal spreadsheet. But it would require significant extra work, plus the help of an expert, to make it a professional piece of software. As for my app, it’s clear that programmers can relax. Their jobs require actual understanding of code, not blind faith in a chatbot’s explanation of a ‘XOR stream cipher’. In the end, I spent a little more than $200 and eight hours to avoid having to zoom in on a mobile spreadsheet. I have no regrets.
