Unit 1 Growing up

Understanding ideas

The Age of Majority

Growing up

Starting out已经通过coming-of-age ceremonies和Rudyard Kipling的If把学生带入这个问题:

What qualities make a mature person?

turning 18。

the age of majority。

What happens legally at 18?

而是:

What does becoming an adult actually mean?

Will you be completely in charge of your own life?

What new responsibilities will this freedom bring?

FREEDOM

和

RESPONSIBILITY。

二、The Age of Majority:标题里的“age”其实有两层含义

legal age。

maturity。

Morgan

some responsibilities are more about attitude than age.

LEGAL ADULTHOOD

≠

COMPLETE MATURITY。

legal boundary。

但是:

independence

responsibility

self-control

social awareness

因此“The Age of Majority”这个标题表面在讨论:

What makes a person mature beyond age?

Bethany,16岁,澳大利亚;

Lin Ning,19岁,中国上海;

Morgan,20

BEFORE 18

↓

JUST AFTER 18

↓

FURTHER INTO ADULTHOOD。

Bethany

Lin Ning

Morgan

EXPECTATION

↓

EXPERIENCE

↓

REFLECTION。

Bethany

I can’t wait to be 18.

earn a wage

pay taxes,

have a say?

rights。

vote

drive

make decisions。

more freedom

more control

more choices。

responsibility

Bethany

Bethany

It is my right.

driving a car also means taking responsibility for my life and the lives of other people.

RIGHT

↓

RESPONSIBILITY。

permission to enjoy freedom。

your actions can affect other people。

A right gives you freedom to act.

Responsibility requires you to think about the consequences of that action.

Bethany

adult says something → teenager learns the correct answer。

perspectives。

professional experience and safety concern。

Bethany依据:

fairness and personal maturity。

Should legal rights depend mainly on age or individual maturity?

Bethany:

I can’t wait to be 18.

Lin Ning:

I expected to feel instantly different.

closed the door on childhood

and

stepped into a whole new adult world。

metaphor。

childhood

↓

door

↓

adult world。

But it wasn’t like that.

idealised adulthood

与:

actual adulthood

Lin Ning

the change has been more subtle and gradual than I imagined.

subtle:

gradual:

18 = instant transformation。

change overnight。

develop over time。

Growing up is not an event.

It is a process.

Instead of being the selfish teenager I used to be,

I have begun to feel more aware of other people

and to develop a stronger sense of social responsibility.

I can do whatever I want now.

而是:

more aware of other people。

more self-centred freedom。

less self-centred thinking。

What do I want?

How will my decision affect others?

What responsibility do I have towards other people and society?

于是:

adulthood

I matter more。

I realise other people matter too.

Lin Ning

an organ donation agreement。

social responsibility

action。

Lin Ning became more socially responsible.

claim。

而:

organ donation agreement

提供:

evidence。

CHANGE IN THINKING

↓

SPECIFIC ACTION

↓

EVIDENCE OF MATURITY。

choices and actions

Lin Ning

credit card。

society now views him differently。

doors

more freedom with money。

steady income,

tempt me to spend more money than I have.

FREEDOM

↓

TEMPTATION

↓

SELF-CONTROL。

you should immediately do it。

Maturity includes knowing that:

“Can I?”

和:

“Should I?”

bank accounts

credit

online shopping

loans

contracts

financial decisions。

financial literacy。

financial responsibility。

Morgan

还有:

a full-time job。

financially independent

rent his own apartment

live away from parents。

his salary is not high enough。

contribute to household bills

支付:

high commuting costs。

EXPECTATION

vs

REALITY。

independence

when independence becomes possible。

emotionally responsible

work full-time

contribute to family expenses

manage money carefully,

live with parents。

not mature?

independence

和:

maturity。

Morgan知道:

he could get a bank loan

to pay the deposit

on his own apartment。

take on debt。

I don’t feel ready to make that kind of commitment.

commitment to a person。

a serious long-term responsibility。

long-term consequences。

I can make my own decision.

而是:

I understand what my decision may require from me afterwards.

Morgan

some responsibilities are more about attitude than age.

What does reaching the age of majority really mean?

turning 18。

rights

choices

consequences

responsibility

attitude。

Legal adulthood begins at a certain age.

Maturity develops through the way we think, choose and take responsibility.

Bethany:

responsibility for safety and other people's lives。

Lin Ning:

social responsibility + financial self-control。

Morgan:

financial responsibility + long-term commitment。

RESPONSIBILITY

Personal responsibility

↓

Social responsibility

↓

Independent adult responsibility。

Bethany

I want the right to...

Lin Ning

I now can..., but should I?

Morgan

I can legally..., but can I actually afford and handle it?

FREEDOM AS PERMISSION

↓

FREEDOM AS CHOICE

↓

FREEDOM AS RESPONSIBLE DECISION-MAKING。

Young people often expect more freedom when they turn 18, but adulthood also brings responsibilities.

first-person accounts

expectations

emotions

conflicts。

Bethany说:

I can’t wait...

Lin Ning说:

I expected...

Morgan说:

I used to believe...

subjective voice。

young people thinking through adulthood themselves。

fact vs opinion

facts

和:

opinions。

例如:

“I will be taking my driving test on the very day I turn 18.”

属于:

fact。

而:

“Surely...you should be allowed to have a say...”

opinion。

Morgan的:

some responsibilities are more about attitude than age

viewpoint。

personal voices

A statement in a text is not automatically a fact simply because it is printed in a textbook.

Bethany thinks the voting arrangement is unfair.

这是:

fact about Bethany's opinion。

但是:

The arrangement is unfair.

the reader/writer accepting the opinion as fact。

Bethany来自:

Australia。

Lin Ning来自:

China。

Morgan来自:

the US。

cross-cultural perspectives。

Australians value freedom.

Chinese people value responsibility.

Americans value independence.

three individuals。

an entire culture。

Compare their experiences,

not stereotype their countries.

Which differences seem related to laws?

Which seem related to personal situations?

Which may be related to social expectations?

cross-cultural thinking。

Introduction

提出:

What does turning 18 really mean?

Voice 1:Bethany

Before adulthood

↓

Expectation of rights

↓

Awareness of responsibility。

Voice 2:Lin Ning

Just after adulthood

↓

Expected instant change

↓

Experienced gradual change

↓

Social responsibility。

Voice 3:Morgan

Further into adulthood

↓

Expected independence

↓

Economic reality

↓

Responsibility as attitude。

QUESTION

↓

EXPECTATION

↓

COMPLICATION

↓

REFLECTION。

parallel structure with progression。

Expectation vs Reality

Bethany:

I expect more legal rights.

↓

But rights bring responsibility.

Lin Ning:

I expected to feel instantly different.

↓

But change was gradual.

Morgan:

I assumed I would have a good job and rented apartment.

↓

But economic reality was different。

EXPECTATION

↓

REALITY

↓

RETHINKING ADULTHOOD。

What is the passage mainly about?

legal rights at the age of 18。

differences among three countries。

Three young people's different experiences and reflections on what turning 18 and becoming an adult really mean.

Turning Eighteen – What Does It Mean?

meaning of adulthood

legal adulthood

Turning Eighteen – What Does It Mean?

questioning。

mention the topic,

capture the central concern。

Bethany:

Lin Ning:

Morgan:

Morgan

expectation → reality → reflection。

maturity comes partly from experience。

happy

unhappy。

Bethany:

eager + confident。

Lin Ning:

initially excited → reflective and cautious。

Morgan:

realistic, slightly disappointed, but hopeful。

positive

negative

context-sensitive vocabulary。

比如:

expectant

cautious

realistic

responsible

hopeful

rather than simply:

good/bad。

Using language

future continuous。

I will be taking my driving test...

I will be signing an organ donation agreement...

I will be getting a credit card...

I’ll be living at home...

I’ll be starting a new job...

will be doing?

looking forward into adulthood。

now,

想象:

what life will be like at a future moment。

Growing up

future life in progress。

I will sign an organ donation agreement tomorrow.

和:

I will be signing an organ donation agreement this time tomorrow.

imagining oneself in a future situation。

talk about future plans。

will be + doing

Why is this tense meaningful in a unit about becoming an adult?

Bethany

I think it’s unfair。

earn a wage

pay taxes

therefore should have a say。

OPINION

↓

EVIDENCE / REASONING。

Lin Ning:

I am becoming socially responsible.

↓

organ donation decision。

Morgan:

I am not ready for complete financial independence.

↓

salary + household bills + commuting costs + loan commitment。

Don't give an opinion without support.

I strongly believe that...

而是:

Why should the reader believe you?

An Experience That Made Me Grow

From then on, I became more mature.

How?

The Age of Majority

I became responsible.

而写:

I began to think about how my decision affected other people.

I became independent.

而写:

I started managing my own budget and realised that every choice involved giving something else up.

changed thinking

和:

changed behaviour

WHAT I USED TO BELIEVE

↓

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED

↓

WHAT I NOW UNDERSTAND。

grow,

misunderstanding / expectation。

lesson learnt

belief

↓

experience

↓

revision of belief。

credit card

driver’s licence

full-time job

vote

bank loan

rent apartment。

activate knowledge。

legal trivia lesson。

Does turning 18 make you an adult?

Yes, legally.

Legally, yes.

But becoming mature is much more gradual and complex.

conceptual development。

What changes when people turn 18?

rights

social status

choices。

Does everything change?

Lin Ning:

No.

Does more freedom make life easier?

Morgan:

Not necessarily.

What comes with freedom?

Responsibility.

So what makes a mature adult?

responsibility

self-control

awareness of others

financial judgement

independence

ability to accept consequences。

最后:

Age marks adulthood.

Attitude and action reveal maturity.

Design your own definition of adulthood

Adulthood = rights + responsibilities。

AGE

FREEDOM

INDEPENDENCE

MONEY

RESPONSIBILITY

SELF-CONTROL

CARE FOR OTHERS

EXPERIENCE。

要求:

Choose the three most important elements of adulthood.

Rank them.

Explain why.

Bethany / Lin Ning / Morgan

textual evidence

和:

personal judgement

attitude rather than age

legal adulthood

和:

psychological/social maturity

clear and administrable boundaries。

individual differences。

Morgan

works

contributes to bills

manages responsibilities

plans financially,

how we define independence。

physical independence

financial independence

emotional independence

decision-making independence

Good morning, judges.

Today I am going to present Understanding Ideas from Unit 1, Growing up, in Selective Compulsory Book 2.

The passage is entitled “The Age of Majority”.

It is a magazine-style column presenting the first-person accounts of three young people: Bethany from Australia, Lin Ning from China and Morgan from the United States.

At the surface level, the passage explores what changes when young people reach the legal age of adulthood.

However, the deeper theme of the text is the relationship among age, freedom, independence and responsibility.

One particularly meaningful feature of the passage is the choice of the three speakers.

Bethany is sixteen and still looking forward to adulthood.

Lin Ning is nineteen and has recently experienced the transition.

Morgan is twenty and has already discovered some of the practical realities of adult life.

Therefore, the three voices form a progression from expectation, to experience, and finally to reflection.

Bethany initially focuses on rights such as voting and driving, but she also recognises that driving involves responsibility for both her own life and the lives of others.

Lin Ning expected adulthood to feel like an immediate transformation, but gradually realised that maturity develops over time and includes greater awareness of other people and social responsibility.

Morgan's experience further challenges the assumption that turning eighteen automatically brings independence. Although he has a full-time job, financial pressures mean that he continues to live with his parents. His conclusion that some responsibilities are more about attitude than age provides an important insight into the passage as a whole.

Therefore, the central question of my lesson will be:

“Does turning eighteen really make a person an adult?”

In terms of discourse, the passage uses three parallel first-person accounts, but these accounts are not simply placed side by side. Together, they create a deeper progression:

expectation, reality and reflection.

Another important reading skill is distinguishing facts from opinions. Since the passage contains several personal viewpoints about fairness, responsibility and adulthood, students need to understand that a statement appearing in a text is not necessarily an objective fact.

Through the lesson, students will move from identifying legal rights and practical changes, to comparing different experiences, and finally to constructing their own evidence-based definition of maturity.

In this way, the lesson will develop language ability, discourse awareness, intercultural awareness, critical thinking and a stronger sense of personal and social responsibility.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. explain the meaning of “the age of majority” in the context of the passage;

  2. summarise Bethany's, Lin Ning's and Morgan's different expectations and experiences of adulthood;

  3. identify the progression from expectation to experience and reflection across the three accounts;

  4. distinguish facts from personal opinions and support their judgments with textual evidence;

  5. explain the relationship among freedom, rights, independence and responsibility;

  6. analyse how first-person narration makes the passage authentic and engaging;

  7. evaluate whether age alone is an adequate measure of maturity;

  8. construct and justify their own definition of a responsible adult.

Teaching focus:

Who can vote?

Who can drive?

Who can get a credit card?

EXPECTATION

↓

REALITY

↓

REFLECTION。

FREEDOM

RESPONSIBILITY

Teaching difficulty:

第一,

区分:

legal adulthood

和:

personal maturity。

第二,

区分:

fact

和:

opinion。

age of majority

milestone

in charge of

responsibility

have a say

mature

instantly

gradual

social responsibility

credit card

steady income

commitment

independent

introduction + three parallel first-person accounts

before adulthood

↓

recent adulthood

↓

adult reality

expectation–reality contrast

Does age equal maturity?

Does freedom equal independence?

Does legal permission mean a decision is wise?

Can different people become mature at different rates?

claim

evidence

reasoning。

judgement

self-control

empathy

financial sense

social responsibility

the age of majority。

clear line。

subtle and gradual。

I no longer need my parents。

turning eighteen

You are legally an adult.

What kind of adult am I becoming?

  1. Why does society need a fixed legal age for adulthood if people mature at different speeds?

  2. Which is a stronger sign of maturity: having more freedom or knowing when not to use that freedom?

  3. If you had to replace age with three criteria for judging whether someone is mature, what would they be, and why?

本文依据外研版普通高中英语选择性必修第二册 Unit 1 Growing up,Understanding ideas板块The Age of Majority进行教材解析。

教材课后活动并没有停留在具体成年权利的信息提取,而是进一步要求学生选择更合适的标题、整理三人的观点,并明确区分facts与opinions;Think & Share还继续提出“What do you think it means to be a responsible adult?”
