When my son was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) and multiple disorders, my world was broken. How was my beautiful little boy ever going to cope? While the other children playing balls at playtime, yelling and shouting with joy, Rufus would sit silently watching from the sidelines. With two left feet, he couldn’t keep up with the fun and games, so his teachers let him stay indoors alone, quietly coloring pictures of animals. It was a desperately sad situation that neither my family nor I knew how to handle.

Birthdays had always been rather painful for Rufus. He hated to be the centre of attention, couldn’t cope with being hugged or touched, and found it difficult to communicate his feelings. Each year, I suggested books about animals, something that he was fascinated by, but on his tenth birthday I decided he should have an animal of his own.

I decided the right pet would be a puppy. On the morning of his birthday, Rufus’s “gift” woke him up to wish him many happy returns. Initially, I worried that the puppy would make Rufus panic. But far from upsetting him, the puppy seemed to override all his symptoms. After a couple of “accidents” on the carpet, I explained to Rufus that his new best friend would need to be taken out into the garden after every nap and meal. I expected this to become my job, but Rufus insisted on playing the role of a protector. He insisted on accompanying his new friend outside each and every time.

It took Rufus less than ten minutes to decide upon a name, Maximus (Max for short). From the very start, Maximus worked his doggy magic on my boy. From beyond his closed door, I could hear my previously silent son chattering away to a puppy who listened attentively to his master’s words. As his confidence with talking grew, Rufus started shouting Maximus’s name from room to room — not that his little black shadow was ever more than a few feet away.
