Guess Who's Got an AI Edge in a Tough Job Market?

para.
para.
para.
para.
para.
Mentioning artificial intelligence to the graduating class of 2026 has been sure to get you booed. And why not? Fresh graduates have spent the past few years being told about the wonders of AI and watched seniors struggle to get a toehold in the labor market. As much as they are right to worry, there's hope on the horizon.
The labor market for fresh graduates is beginning to look more welcoming than it has in recent years. Companies are better placed to hire again after headcount reductions and hiring freezes on white-collar roles helped them get past the over-staffing of the pandemic era. We're also in a moment now when AI is looking as much like an opportunity as it is a longer-term concern for young professionals.
This improved outlook has become more pronounced over the past few months. The unemployment rate for workers between the ages of 20 to 24 has fallen on a year-over-year basis every month in 2026 after rising steadily the previous two years.
The decline doesn't look like noise because job postings in two key industries have been picking up at the same time, according to employment website Indeed. Software development and human resources roles, which witnessed long slumps, have risen steadily since February. Postings for software developers shouldn't be rising if AI is killing technology jobs, and employers tend to only hire HR workers when they're expecting headcount to increase rather than fall in the future.
When it comes to AI, companies are in the middle of a messy transition. They've committed significant money to adopting the new tools but are still foggy about their use cases and value beyond a few niche areas. Anthropic PBC's surging revenue growth represents tens of billions of dollars of spending that its customers weren't doing even at the end of last year. Ara Kharazian, lead economist at Ramp Economics Lab, notes that the average business is spending 13 times more on AI tokens now than it was in January 2025.
The sticker shock is beginning to hit home. Uber Technologies Inc. is a case in point: Despite reportedly burning through its annual AI budget in four months, Chief Operating Officer Andrew Macdonald said the company hasn't yet seen the spending translate directly into more useful features for customers. "We're going to have to start talking about token consumption and the associated costs versus headcount," he told Rapid Response. CEOs aren't sure when the actual benefits will show up, Match CEO Spencer Rascoff said earlier this month.
Bottlenecks throughout the AI supply chain threaten to raise costs further, meaning there won't be enough computing power for the technology to disrupt large numbers of jobs in the near-term.
This is all good news for fresh graduates. AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have been around long enough now that they can pitch themselves as AI native in a way mid-career and older workers can't. Who better to help companies figure out what their AI strategy should be than young, hungry, low-cost workers who have spent the past two years learning AI skills because everyone was telling them that's the future and they'd be entering a difficult labor market?
This realization is spreading among early corporate adopters. Bank of New York Mellon Corp., for example, has tripled the size of its intern and analyst classes since 2022 to tap into "a cohort that's naturally AI inclined," Chief Executive Officer Robin Vince told Bloomberg Television. Executives using AI most extensively were the most bullish on entry-level hiring, according to Strada Education Foundation, which surveyed about 1,500 employers about their graduate hiring plans for this year.
Companies spending millions or tens of millions of dollars a year on AI need structure around that spending including which providers to use, token budgets, prompt efficiency and measuring returns. These are all issues that AI-native staff are well suited to address, unburdened by legacy workflows and "the way things have always been done."
It's also an opportunity for new workers to rise through the ranks faster than they ordinarily would. Companies that limited hiring or laid off workers don't have as many second or third-year employees in a position to be promoted. New graduates who demonstrate sharp AI abilities will find themselves in more senior positions quicker than usual as employers look to justify their investments.
It might not be as easy to get a job now as it was in the salad days of 2021, but it's not as dire as it's been since then. New grads should feel encouraged that there are more opportunities now for them to get their shot.

Mentioning artificial intelligence to the graduating class of 2026 has been sure to get you booed. And why not? Fresh graduates have spent the past few years being told about thewondersof AI and watched seniors struggle to get atoeholdin thelabor market. As much as they are right to worry, there's hopeon the horizon.
ENthings that inspire amazement or admiration (in this context, the impressive benefits people claim for AI)
搭配the wonders of AI 被AI的神奇之处所吸引;Many people talk about the wonders of AI, but its impact on jobs is more complicated.
重点难词toehold/ˈtoʊhoʊld/n.
ENinitial foothold (a small but real first chance to enter or progress, weaker than a stable position)
Many graduates struggle to get a toehold in the job market.
ENjob market (the supply of workers and the demand for jobs, broader than a single company's hiring)

写作搭配on the horizonprep. phr.
ENlikely to happen or appear soon (used for future developments, not a literal line in the sky)
There's hope on the horizon. /
1.As much as they are right to worry, there's hopeon the horizon.
句首让步从句“As much as they are right to worry”,这里不是字面上的“多么……”,而是表示“尽管/虽然他们担心是有道理的”。可套用模板“[As much as + 主语 + be + 形容词 + to do], [主句]”,如“尽管……
The labor market for fresh graduates is beginning to lookmore welcomingthan it has in recent years. Companies are better placed to hire again afterheadcount reductionsandhiring freezeson white-collar roles helped them get past theover-staffingof the pandemic era. We're also in a moment now when AI is looking as much like an opportunity as it is alonger-term concernfor young professionals.
写作搭配more welcomingadj. phr.
ENmore friendly and receptive (here, describing a market or environment that is easier for newcomers to enter; unlike the literal sense of being hospitable to guests)

The company dealt with over-staffing by freezing new hires.
写作搭配longer-term concernˈlɔːŋər tɜːrm kənˈsɜːrnn. phr.
ENa worry about future effects (not an immediate problem)
AI is not just an opportunity; it's also a longer-term concern for young professionals.
1.We're also in a moment nowwhen AI is looking as much like an opportunity as it is a longer-term concern for young professionals.
最难的是 `as much like A as B` 这个比较结构,不是简单的“像A一样”,而是“既像A,也像B / 同样既是A也是B”的并列对照。 可套用的句型是:`X is looking as much like A as it is B` = `X 既像A,也像B`。
This improved outlook has becomemore pronouncedover the past few months. The unemployment rate for workers between the ages of 20 to 24 has fallen on ayear-over-yearbasis every month in 2026 after rising steadily the previous two years.

Sales rose 8% year over year in Q2.
The decline doesn't look likenoisebecause jobpostingsin two key industries have been picking up at the same time, according to employment websiteIndeed. Software development and human resources roles, whichwitnessedlongslumps, have risen steadily since February.Postings for software developers shouldn't be rising if AI is killing technology jobs, and employers tend to only hire HR workers when they're expecting headcount to increase rather than fall in the future.
ENjob ads (positions publicly listed by employers, not the same as actual hires)
Job postings in tech have increased since February.
ENcommon meaning: see or observe something happen; here: experience or go through a period of change or decline (formal news style, not just “see”).

ENcommon meaning: a sudden droop or fall; in this context: a long period of weak performance or decline in a market, industry, or data series
Software development and human resources roles, which witnessed long slumps, have risen steadily since February.

The decline doesn't look like noise because hiring is rising in two key industries.
1.Postings for software developersshouldn't be risingif AI is killing technology jobs, andemployerstend to only hire HR workerswhen they're expecting headcount to increase rather than fall in the future.
第二个难点是 `tend to only hire... when... rather than...`,翻译时最好拆成“企业通常只有在…… 可套用的句型是:`X shouldn't be V-ing if...` = “如果……,X按理不该还在……”;`tend to only do Y when... rather than...` = “通常只有在……
When it comes to AI, companies are in the middle of a messytransition. They've committed significant money toadoptingthe new tools but are stillfoggyabout their use cases and value beyond a fewnicheareas.Anthropic PBC'ssurgingrevenuegrowth represents tens of billions of dollars of spending that its customers weren't doing even at the end of last year.Ara Kharazian, lead economist at Ramp Economics Lab, notes that the average business is spending 13 times more on AItokensnow than it was in January 2025.
ENa change from one state or system to another; a period of moving between them
The company is in transition from traditional software to AI services.
ENcovered with fog; unclear or vague in thought, understanding, or explanation
They’re still foggy about AI’s use cases.
ENsmall and specialized in a particular field; here it means limited to a few narrow use cases, not the noun sense of a small market segment
AI still has value only in a few niche areas.
ENmoving in powerful waves; here, rising very quickly (especially for numbers, demand, or revenue)
搭配Anthropic PBC's surging revenue growth reflects huge AI spending.
Anthropic PBC

ENincome from business or tax (the total money received, not profit)
The company reported record revenue last quarter.

Businesses are spending far more on AI tokens than they did a few months ago.
1.They've committed significant money to adopting the new toolsbutare still foggy about their use cases and value beyond a few niche areas.
最容易误译的是第二个谓语:"are still foggy about their use cases and value beyond a few niche areas",其中their指代前面的the new tools, about后面的宾语其实是并列名词短语“use cases and value”,而beyond a few niche areas整体限制的是“使用场景和价值的范围”。 可套用句型:"have committed A to doing B, but are still foggy about C and D beyond E"=“已投入A去做B,但除E外,仍不清楚C和D”。
2.Anthropic PBC's surging revenue growthrepresents tens of billions of dollars of spendingthat its customers weren't doing even at the end of last year.
A represents B of C = “A 体现/意味着 C 方面有 B 规模的……”。

1.Whobetter to help companies figure outwhat their AI strategy should bethan young, hungry, low-cost workerswho have spent the past two years learning AI skillsbecause everyone was telling themthat's the futureandthey'd be entering a difficult labor market?
Who better to do A than B? = 没有谁比B更适合做A;其中 to help companies figure out... 是补足语,what their AI strategy should be 则作 figure out 的宾语从句。

1.Executivesusing AI most extensivelywere the most bullish on entry-level hiring, according to Strada Education Foundation, which surveyed about 1,500 employers about their graduate hiring plans for this year.
可套用句型:‘A using B most extensively were the most bullish on C, according to X, which surveyed...’

最容易误解的是 “structure around that spending including...” X need structure around Y, including A, B, and C = “X 需要围绕 Y 建立 X 体系/框架,包括 A、B 和 C。”
2.Theseare all issuesthat AI-native staff are well suited to address, unburdened by legacy workflows and "the way things have always been done."
A are well suited to do B, unburdened/unconstrained by C = “A 很适合做B,而且不受C束缚。”

1.New graduateswho demonstrate sharp AI abilitieswill find themselves in more senior positions quicker than usualas employers look to justify their investments.
另一个易错点是 "as employers look to justify their investments",这里的 as 更接近“因为/由于”,是原因状语从句,不要硬译成“当…… X will find themselves in Y as Z" = “X会因为Z而更快处于/进入Y”,其中 find themselves 常译作“发现自己处于/最终处于”。

“it has risen steadily since February. Postings for software developers shouldn't be rising if AI is killing technology jobs”
“the unemployment rate for workers between the ages of 20 to 24 has fallen on a year-over-year basis every month in 2026”
“Who better to help companies figure out what their AI strategy should be than young, hungry, low-cost workers”
“there's hope on the horizon”
“Companies are better placed to hire again after headcount reductions and hiring freezes ... We're also in a moment now when AI is looking as much like an opportunity as it is a longer-term concern”
