Passage B

Rico is a star pet detective, using his extraordinary sense of smell to reunite lost pets with their families. But before Rico became a "star", he was a poor homeless dog.

The life-changing moment for Rico came when he met Jane, a warm-hearted dog trainer. It was a cold winter. Rico was lying by the roadside, sick and hungry. Then Jane appeared in Rico’s life. She took Rico home and gave him food and shelter. For the first time in his life, Rico knew what it was like to have a home.

With Jane’s great care, Rico became healthier and grew stronger. He loved to stay with Jane and followed her everywhere, even to her workplace—a dog training center. One day, when Jane was training other dogs on pet-finding skills, she tried some training on Rico. To Jane’s surprise, Rico stood out from the other dogs for his amazing talent for tracking and sniffing out lost animals. In just a few months, Rico was aiding in the search for pets that had gone missing.

Over the years, Rico has participated in more than 20 successful rescues. One of Rico’s most unusual rescues involved a capybara (水豚) named Kiwi, which ran away from a zoo. When the zoo’s usual methods fell short, they sought help from Jane and Rico. By then Kiwi had disappeared for days and little fresh trail (嗅迹) was left. In spite of the challenge, Rico guided the rescue team to the right area miles away from the zoo, where Kiwi was found safe.

Now, Jane and Rico are not only rescuing animals but also helping pet owners connect with their furry friends. The story of Rico is a moving reminder that kindness can work miracles—not only for animals, but also for the families they help reunite.

Passage C

The industrialization of agriculture has allowed us to produce larger quantities of crops but it has also led to a significant increase in water usage. Dry farming is now an increasingly popular option for farmers.

Dry farming is a method of growing crops without irrigation in regions that receive low levels of rainfall. This type of farming relies on crops that are naturally adapted to dry conditions. Farmers usually plant seeds at wider intervals to reduce competition for water.

Such farming practices can be traced back to thousands of years ago, when they were adopted in dry regions such as the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa. It is believed that China has a history of more than 8,000 years in dry farming.

This farming method has been widely popularized since the 19th century because it offers notable benefits. Firstly, it promotes sustainable agriculture as it requires significantly less water usage. Additionally, dry farming has been shown to produce crops with more concentrated flavors and nutrients. This is because the water stress encourages deeper root growth, leading to a stronger root system to take in nutrients more efficiently from the soil.

Finally, adopting dry farming can also lower overall production costs, as it removes the need for expensive irrigation equipment and reduces energy consumption.

Yet dry farming also comes with its own challenges. For example, farmers must be able to read the signs of the soil and adapt their techniques to changing weather conditions. These challenges are related to how to practise dry farming effectively and appropriately. They suggest the need for dry farmers to constantly update their knowledge of agriculture and learn farming techniques. Although there are such challenges, it is widely agreed that dry farming is a highly valuable alternative in drier environments.

11. According to Paragraph 1, what has led to a significant increase in water usage?

A. Modern industry.

B. Dry farming.

C. Agricultural industrialization.

D. Crop production.

12. When practising dry farming, farmers often ______.

A. select certain crops

B. compete for water

C. plant crops in a tiny space

D. increase water consumption

13. Which of the following is a benefit of dry farming?

A. Raised levels of rainfall.

B. Decreased energy production.

C. Crops with more concentrated nutrients.

D. Farming with the latest irrigation system.

14. What do dry farmers need to do to overcome the challenges?

A. To create river engagement.

B. To change weather conditions.

C. To advocate soil conservation.

D. To update dry farming practices.

15. The passage is most probably written by ______.

A. a gardener

B. a researcher

C. a historian

D. a salesperson

In some bad days when we are really stressed out, we just want to treat ourselves to a good movie. 16

First, old movies can spare us the trouble of decision-making. With a variety of movies to choose from, we may spend hours in making decisions. 17

Second, old movies can offer us comfort and predictability. We know exactly what is going to happen. 18

A. Of all the movies we will choose the old one.

B. But going back to old movies frees us from such trouble.

C. Finally, old movies allow us to relax with minimum effort.

D. That’s because old movies remind us of who we were when we first watched them.
