C.$500. D.$1.000 B Climbing, I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity, I came tosee that something quitedifferent happens ontherock. Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock, I am fully focused. Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert (警觉的), and hands move across the surface. Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is essential. As an arts student studying English literature, I discovered a new type of reading from outdoor climbing. Going out ontothecrags (悬崖),I sawhow you could learn to read therocks and develop a vocabulary of physical movements. Good climbers knew how to adjust their bodies on to the stone. Watchingthem, I wanted to possess that skillful “language”. My progress happened when I worked for the Caingorms National Park Authority. Guiding my explorations into this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd, a lady too. Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal achievement. Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she praises the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements. Through her generous spirit and my own curiosity, I saw that rock climbingneed not be aprocess of testingoneself against anything. Rather, the intensityoffocus could develop a person intoanother way of being. Spending so much time in high and stony places has transformed my view on the world and our place in it. I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday. Working with gravity, geology (地质学), rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This bond lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the rocks, because this iswhere I feel incontact with ourland. 第4页共10 页 {#{QQABDQSAggiAQJIAAAhCUwUSCAKQkAECCQgORBAMsAAAQRNABCA=}#}24.Whydoes theauthorlikerock climbing? C Diving in the ocean, marine biologist Erika Woolsey has seen how coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are being damaged by climate change. It has made her decide to find a way to share her experience —including thosewho can’t easily exploretheocean. Through her non-profit, The Hydrous, Woolsey is using virtual reality to bring the ocean to everyone. Scientists, filmmakers and divers are taking people on immersive (沉浸式的) virtual dives, attracting attention to reef damage and expecting action to protect our sea. About 25% of marine species depend on coral reefs. However, climate change, pollution and overfishing have done harm to around halftheworld’s shallowwater coral reefs. Twenty years of underwater exploration has given Woolsey a detailed understanding of the dangerous situations facing reefs. “I’ve seen this first-hand shift. Healthy colourful coral reefs become what look likethesurface ofthemoon step bystep,”Woolsey says. It is through this experience that The Hydrous team set out to recreate with their award-winning film Immerse. Intended to watch with a VR headset, viewers join Woolsey for a nine-minute guided virtual diveonthecoral reefs, immersed ina 360-degreeunderwater view. They swim alongside sea turtles and sharks before witnessing the worsening of the reefs. The experience often brings out strong feelings. “As soon as people take off that headset and look me in the eye, they want to tell me a story about their ocean experience,” Woolsey says. “It’s that human connectiontoour ocean that willsolveour ocean problems.” Woolsey hopes advances in camera technology will allow her team to take more and more people to places in the ocean that are underexplored and places further away from human civilization. They are developing a virtual experience that will put the people in the role of a marine biologist, carrying out biodiversity surveys underwater, and even transporting the viewers to space to monitor global sea surfacetemperatures. 28.Whydid ErikaWoolsey set upTheHydrous? A.Tocollect money forocean protection. B.Tolet thepublicknowabout coral reefs better. C.Tohelp peopleenjoy the ocean’s beauty. D Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward, turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The device, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can beused to navigate (导航) and map unknown environments. The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots (扭曲环机器人). They are made of something liketheribbon (缎带) and thenjoined together at theend toform aring. When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of theribbon touching thesurface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls. “The ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴) , giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a professor ofmechanical and aerospace engineering. The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted ring-bot meets a boundary- likethe wall ofa box-itwill travel along theboundary. The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are madeof, rather than being directed bya computeror human. “Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing ourunderstanding ofwhat ispossibleisexciting.” 32.Whichof thefollowing mostaffects thespeed oftherobot’s rolling? A.Theribbon. B.Thecentral axis. C.The shapeand material. D.The higher surface temperature. 33.Howdoes theauthorintroduce thenew soft robots? A.Byexplainingtherobot’s working ways. B.By quoting viewers’opinions. C.By making somecomparisons. D.By offering reasons and results. 34.Whatis Yin’s attitudetowards twisted ring-bots? A.Unclear. B.Favourable. C.Negative. I need to be extra careful when changing the angle or 64 (direct)of thebrush, especially ifIpress too hard onthepaper. Mr Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr Roberts kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha tostay after class for amoment. “Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance tomorrow, do you think you can find, your courage?” Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. Shehad kept herhead down and hoped theschool day would end soon. When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mommawas baking. Mommastudied Niesha’s face as shecame into thekitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?” Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story.
