The Natural Center is a Beautiful Ode to Earth
What is nature? When you imagine nature, do you think about humans? Often, we don’t imagine humans as a
part of the natural landscape, instead viewing ourselves and our creations as separate and distinct from the organic
world around us. How do we reconcile (使和谐一致) our idea of humanity with our idea of nature, as we are animals
ourselves?
Artist Aaron Delehanty explores questions such as these through his work The Natural Center. Delehanty, a
lifelong environmentalist, creates pieces that focus on the boundary between nature and humankind. His goal, no
matter the media or technique he uses, is to challenge the way we systemize our natural world.
The Natural Center is currently on exhibit in the Art and Music Library’s Frontispace Gallery. Each one of the
mixed media paintings and sculptures intertwines (交织) themes of nature and humanity, exploring feelings of
unnaturalness or discomfort in the spaces where they meet.
The most prominently placed piece is the waterco lor series on the back wall of the exhibit. On the other wall,
the Origami Audubon Series features image ry from John James Audubon’s famous Birds of America watercolor
painting series. The exhibit also houses four sculpted cranes, each frozen in a unique pose.
The Natural Center will be on display through Friday, Feb. 17 in the Frontispace Gallery, located on the ground
floor of Rush Rhees Library at the Art and Music Library entrance.
1. What does Aaron Delehanty intend to do through The Natural Center?
A. To praise humans as animals. B. To challenge the natural world.
C. To integrate mankind into nature. D. To systemize the human world.
2. What can you do in the exhibit?
A. Make unique sculptures. B. Admire fascinating artworks.
C. Enjoy comfortable music. D. Observe various living creatures.

Chin was partially paralysed in 2018 after a stroke. For several months, she remained in hospital and began to
rebuild her strength and ability to communicate. “At the beginning, I was so weak I couldn’t even use a wheelchair,”
she says. “I realised that I wouldn’t be able to go back to my old life.”
Asking for help was particularly difficult as Chin didn’t want to feel like a burden, but after being recommended a
course of therapy (疗法), she started to glimpse a future for herself. She started opening up to other people and one
day her social worker suggested she should try a sport. “She mentioned the wheelchair basketball team and I decided
to give it a try,” she says.
The first two times Rose Chin arrived at the basketball court as a 65-year-old , to try out for the Inverness
wheelchair team, she couldn’t make it past the doors. “I looked through the window and just thought: ‘I can’t do
this,’” she says. “The third time, though, I made myself go through before I could think about it. The team welcomed
me with open arms and it’s changed the way I live in my wheelchair ever since.”
Following that successful third attempt onto the court in 2022, Chin was enlisted as part of the 10- person team
and began attending weekly training sessions learning how to pass, throw and defend while moving herself in a
specially designed chair. “We very quickly became a little family with a WhatsApp group full of jokes,” she laughs.
“I’m the oldest on the team and the youngest is 19 but when I play, age doesn’t come into it — it’s such a pleasure.”
“I feel so independent and I know I will keep playing for as long as I can,” she says. “I want us to raise more
money to get more equipment so we can encourage others to join. They might be feeling like I was, but I want them
to know that there’s opportunity out there — they don’t have to be alone.”
4. Why did Chin try out for the wheelchair basketball team?
A. She was passionate about the sports. B. She was inspired by a social worker.
C. She gained the support from the team. D. She wanted to test the effect of therapy.
5. What did Chin experience during the first two attempts?
A. A mental struggle. B. A frustrating rejection.
C. A warm welcome. D. A hard training session.
6. What does Chin think of the team?
A. It relieves her aging anxiety. B. It feels like a happy family.
C. It has brilliant basketball players. D. It helps her enjoy some jokes.
7. Which of the following can best describe Chin?
A. Modest and cheerful. B. Talented and creative.C. Confident and honest. D. Independent and kind.

Good news for lazy gardeners: one labour-saving change could almost double the number of butterflies in your
garden, according to a new scientific study — let the grass grow long.
Now an analyses of six years of butterfly sightings across 600 British gardens has provided evidence that
wilder lawns increase numbers. The benefits of leaving areas of grass long were most obvious in gardens within
intensively (密集) farmed landscapes, with up to 93% more butterflies found and a greater range of species.
Gardens with long grass in urban areas showed an 18% increase.
“We wanted to be able to give tried and tested gardening advice that will benefit butterflies, as we know lots of
people want to help,” said Dr Richard Fox, the head of science at Butterfly Conservation and a co-author of the
study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment.
“This study proves, for the first time, that allowing a patch of grass to grow long will attract more butterflies
into your garden,” he said.
According to the study, long grass in gardens attracts more butterfly species whose caterpillars feed on
grasses. Fox said this suggested the lift in population was not simply because long grass provided more nectar (花
蜜) from wildflowers within it, but because butterflies were seeking or actually breeding (繁殖) in rewilded lawns.
Fox said: “What people are doing with long grass in gardens is creating potential or actual breeding habitat. In
order to make an impact on the bio-diversity crisis we need to be creating places where butterflies and other
wildlife can breed.”
If you have a patch of long grass you may have grasshoppers, beetles and ant hills as well — there will be all
these spin-offs (派生物).” He added.
8. What do we know about the study?
A. The researchers viewed 600 Americans gardens.
B. Only more butterflies were found in the gardens.
C. Dr. Richard Fox alone completed the research.
D. It proves wilder lawns attracts more butterflies.
9. Why do more butterfly species go to wilder fields?
A. They can eat caterpillars on the long grass.
B. Wild flowers create a beautiful environment.
C. Butterflies will easily breed babies there.
D. Wild grass can itself provide sweet nectar.10. Which is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Long grass brings more butterflies.
B. Lazy gardeners have a good harvest.
C. More sighting of butterflies in cities.
D. A good labour-saving change in factory.
11. What do Fox’s words mean in the last two paragraphs?
A. If you are lazy, your vegetables will be eaten by insects.
B. The effortless change helps solve the bio-diversity crisis.
C. We should protect just butterflies instead of other wildlife.
D. Ants and grasshoppers are less important than butterflies.
D
You’ve probably heard someone lament (惋惜) the state of “kids today” that current generations aren’t as: smart
as the ones that came before them. However, psychologists who study intelligence have found that there isn’t much
support for this idea; instead, the opposite may actually be true.
The Flynn effect, first described in the 1980s by researcher James Flynn, refers to the finding that scores on IQ
tests have increased in the past century. Researchers studying this effect have found wide support for this phenomenon.
One research paper, published by psychologist Lisa Trahan and her colleagues, combined the results of other published
studies (which included a total of over 14,000 participants) and found that IQ scores have indeed increased since the
1950s, although researchers have documented some exceptions.
Researchers have put forward several theories to explain the Flynn effect. One explanation has to do with
improvements in health and nutrition. For example, the past century has seen a decrease in smoking, discontinuation of
the use of harmful lead paint, improvements in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, and improvements
in nutrition. As Scott Barry Kaufman writes for Psychology Today. “The Flynn effect serves as a reminder that when
we give people more opportunities to prosper, more people do prosper. ”
Another explanation for the Flynn effect has to do with societal changes that have occurred in the past century
as a result of the Industrial Revolution. According to Flynn, the world today is “a world where we’ve had to develop
new mental habits.” Flynn has found that IQ scores have increased the most rapidly on questions that ask us to find
similarities between different things and more abstract types of problem- solving- both of which are things that we
need to do more of in the modern world.
The Flynn effect tells us that the human mind is much more adaptable than we might have thought. It seems that
some of our thinking patterns aren’t necessarily innate, but rather things that we learn from our environment. Whenexposed to modern industrial society, we think about the world in different ways that our ancestors did. In other
words, instead of being a measure of natural, unlearned intelligence, IQ may be something that can be shaped by the
education we receive and the society we live in.
12. How did Trahan and her colleagues’ research support the Flynn effect?
A. By explaining the cause and effect. B. By surveying over 14, 000 participants.
C. By making documents of the exceptions. D. By relating to the results of other studies.
13. Which of the following reasons for increasing IQ scores is WRONG?
A. Many of the public health issues are being addressed.
B. We do more abstract types of problem- solving nowadays.
C. People attach more importance to intellectual development.
.
D The Industrial Revolution changed people’s habits of mind.
14. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “innate” in paragraph 5?
A. Hard to explain. B. Exactly the same. C. Naturally born. D. Likely to change.
15. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. Scores on IQ tests have improved over time.
B. Modem society gives people more opportunities.
C. Studying the Flynn effect is helpful for education.
D. People have wrong opinions about current generations.

“If you buy things you do not need, soon you will have to sell things you need.” This is a piece of wise advice
from Warren Buffet, arguably one of the greatest financial minds of the 21th century. ____16____ This is true
especially in the present economic climate.
While the idea of being frugal(节俭的) has long been a part of Eastern culture, the relatively recent growth of
wealth in China as well as the ease of purchasing has led to increased consumerism for many across the country.
Yet this increased consumption of goods has been pushing up the prices of certain bare essentials such as housing,
transportation and food, which is forcing people to reevaluate their priorities while spending money. ____17____
The internet is flooded with advice on where one can save money as well as good opinions about how they
should spend their money. For example, clothes can be bought second-hand, but you should never skip a visit to the
dentist. ____18____ In the meanwhile, you should limit those that are fancy but not entirely necessary. Of course,it is still fine to occasionally spend money on a nice vacation, but buying thirty pairs of shoes you will only wear a
few times is neither responsible nor sustainable.
Hopefully, we all fully understand at this point that the resources on the earth are indeed limited. ____19____
As a result, the choice (forced or not) to be frugal is not only good for one’s wallet, but also beneficial to the planet
in the long run. Have you ever chosen to starve yourself to get a pair of limited-edition sneakers? ____20____
A. A continuous growth model on this planet is by no means sustainable.
B. These words have always not been taken seriously by young people.
C. They are meant to encourage people to buy more stuff than they need.
D. It makes sense to prioritize goods and services that directly affect your health.
E. It is no wonder then that being frugal is once again becoming a dominant trend.
F. Many young people today appear to be taking these words very much to heart.
,
G. If so it is high time you started making changes for yourself and for all humanity.

It was my brother's idea. Let's get Mom a pet dog for her birthday. It would make her happy. I thought it was a
good idea, as Mom had always wanted to own a dog. By the time our conversation ended, I had my task: find our
mother a dog.
After a careful search, I finally found an ad for dogs in a local newspaper. A nearby family had a dog who had
just given birth to five male puppies(小狗)! All had had their first vaccines(疫苗),and would be ready to
leave their mom in a few weeks.I gave them a call.
The man who answered the phone listened patiently to my story and set a date for us to meet the dogs.
When the day arrived, I got into my brother's car. We pulled up in front of some houses that sat along a narrow
street. As we stepped onto the sidewalk,we were greeted by noisy barks(吠叫声). Four dogs had positioned
themselves on the back of a sofa and were watching us through a large window. We climbed onto the porch(门廊)
and rang the doorbell.
A tall man with graying hair and a kind smile opened the door. As I reached to shake his hand, I could see thepuppies behind him, running to get to us. Each puppy wore a different color string around his neck.
We met the man's wife, who wore a similar friendly smile and welcomed us to her home. We met the puppies'
parents and then set about the business of selecting a friend for our mother. There were four puppies and four visitors;
the man handed each of us a dog. Three of the puppies looked up at us with large, curious eyes. The fourth one, who I
was holding, began to wiggle excitedly and kiss my face. "Let's take this one! He's the one! Look how lovely he is!" I
said. As far as I was concerned, it was a done deal.

in Heaven”, which is a wonderful story about the Monkey King. The show will take place in the school auditorium
next Saturday at 7:00 PM. We welcome all students and teachers to attend and enjoy the performance. After the
show, we welcome your suggestions and comments, which I think are highly appreciated to help us improve.

【答案】My brother wasn 't sure and suggested that we take some time to get to know all of them. We spent the next
hour sitting on the floor playing with a group of puppies. Finally, we settled on a different puppy for our mom. He
was the smallest and weakest of the dogs and made up for his smallness with a large personality. He spent most of
the time we were there either jumping on one of us or following his patient mother around asking for more to eat. We
signed the paperwork and agreed on the pick-up date.
Two weeks later, we picked up the dog and hid him around the corner in my mom's living room while she opened
her birthday gifts. Just when she thought she was done, the small dog walked across the room toward her. It took a
moment for Mom to be aware of him, and then she began to cry. She knelt on the floor and pulled the dog into her
arms. As she kissed him, she looked up through her tears and said, “This is the best birthday gift I've ever got”.
Hearing that, my brother and I looked at each other and smiled.
