Payeng from India’s northeastem Assam region has achieved what many environmental organizations struggle
to do — single-handedly creating and nurturing a 1,360-acre forest ecosystem over the course of four decades.
The journey began in 1979 when Payeng, then just 16 years old, witnessed a heartbreaking scene on the
Brahmaputra River’s sandbars. Following floods that washed away topsoil and vegetation, he saw hundreds of
snakes die under the burning sun with no shade to protect them. This disturbing experience planted the seed of anidea that would grow into his life’s work. When local forestry officials dismissed his concerns and claimed nothing
could grow in the degraded soil, the determined teenager took matters into his own hands.
Starting with just a few bamboo saplings (幼苗), Payeng developed a creative approach to reforestation. He
introduced red ants to naturally enrich the soil, despite their painful bites. As the bamboo began to take root, he
designed an innovative irrigation (灌溉) system using earthen pots with small holes, suspended on bamboo
platforms above each sapling. This simple but effective solution allowed water to slowly drop to the plants over
several days, crucial for their survival during dry periods.
What began as a small cluster (簇) of bamboo grew year by year into an astonishingly diverse ecosystem.
Payeng expanded his planting to include native species and eventually valuable teak trees. His daily routine of
planting and caring for trees continued without stopping, even when neighbors laughed at his efforts or when the
physical labor became exhausting. The forest gradually became home to an incredible diversity of wildlife — from
insects and birds to deer, elephants, and even the endangered Bengal tiger.
Today, Payeng continues his work while advocating for environmental education. “Nature created a perfect
balance,” he often says. “When we damage it, we must work to restore it.”
4. What motivated Payeng to start his forest project?
A. Advice from local forestry experts.
B. Childhood dreams of becoming a botanist.
C. Witnessing wildlife suffering from habitat loss.
D. Government funding for environmental protection.
5. How did Payeng address the irrigation challenge?
A. By relying on seasonal rainfall. B. By digging artificial ponds across the area.
C. By training villagers to transport water daily. D. By using containers with holes to supply water.
6. Which of the following can best describe Payeng?
A. Visionary and decisive. B. Humorous and flexible.
C. Passive and dependent. D. Profit-driven and commercial.
7 What can we say about the reforestation project?
A. It’s a typical multi-party attempt.
B. It’s an accidental result of natural regrowth.
C. It’s an ecological masterpiece built by hand.
D. It’s a government-funded conservation program.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. CC
It’s the love-hate relationship that defined a generation. We think we know all about teenagers and the phones
to which they’re tied: sleeping with them under the pillow (枕头), panicking at the prospect of ever being denied
Wi-Fi, so glued to the screen that they’re ignoring the world unfolding around them. Yet the first generation to have
never really known a life without social media — the drug that primarily keeps them coming back to their phones
for more — is now grown up enough to reflect on what it may have done to them, and the answers are almost
enough to break your heart.
Two-thirds of 16-to-24-year-olds think social media does more harm than good and three-quarters want
tougher regulation to protect younger people from it, according to a survey by the New Britain Project, a think tank
founded by a former teacher, Anna McShane. Half think they spent too much time on it when they were younger,
with regret highest among those who started using social media youngest. And most tellingly of all, four in five say
they’d keep their own children away from it for as long as they could if they became parents. This isn’t how anyone
talks about something they love, but how you look back on a relationship that was making you miserable.
Though the focus groups she conducted confirmed that parents were desperate for help to make children off
screens, what’s refreshing about McShane’s research is that it suggests the generations aren’t as locked in combat
(斗争) as they sometimes feel; that increasingly, we’re all on the same side. Gen Z, it turns out, don’t need more
lectures from their (often equally addicted) elders about getting off that bloody phone. If anything, they may have
something to teach us.
Rather cheeringly, however, it seems in the meantime Gen Z are taking things into their own hands. A
generation of kids who grew up online, and all too often started their first jobs dialling remotely into Zoom
meetings, now seem to be actively trying to teach themselves to socialise in the real world.
8. What is the common attitude of Gen Z towards social media?
A. Negative. B. Approving. C. Dismissive. D. Unclear.
9. Which of the words can best describe Gen Z and their parents’ attitude towards social media?
A. Consistent. B. Unreasonable.
C. Conflicting. D. Misguided.
10. How are Gen Z responding to the situation?
A. Organizing offline community events. B. Relearning face-to-face interaction.
C. Developing strict screen-time schedules. D. Pushing for school curriculum reforms.
11. Which of the following can be the title for the text?
A. Raised Online, Growing Disconnected B. Zoomers Defend Their Screen HabitsC. Gen Z Demand Unlimited Screen Time D. Growing Socially, Attracted To Social Media
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. B 11. A
D
You’ve been counting down the days to meet your best friend and peer (同龄人). But before you can get a
word in, your friend passes you something and excitedly announces: I’ve got a new phone! What follows is a one-
sided conversation where you nod politely as they give detailed descriptions of the features of their new phone. You
know you should feel happy for them, but instead, you’re left with a mix of frustration, jealousy (嫉妒), and even
loneliness.
This situation is more common than you might think. When someone becomes really into a new possession,
it’s natural to feel sidelined. The dynamic of your friendship seems to shift overnight — where you once talked
about shared interests, school life, or future plans, now every conversation circles back to their latest expensive
purchase. Psychologist Catherine Hallissey explains this phenomenon: “Our brains are hardwired to seek novelty.
Sometimes it’s about the object itself; other times, it’s about the social status or confidence boost that comes with
owning something new.” It’s also helpful to remember that this phase is short-lived. The excitement over new
possessions always fades, and your friendship will eventually return to its normal rhythm.
The emotional fallout can be surprisingly intense. You might feel like you’ve been replaced by an object, or
start questioning your own value and place within your friend’s priorities when faced with their flashy new status
symbol. That growing sense of feeling — that Shakespeare famously called the “green-eyed monster” — is
completely normal in these situations. In our social media age where comparisons are constant, such reactions are
completely normal.
Rather than beating yourself up for these emotions, the healthiest approach is to recognize and accept them.
Catherine suggests a simple but powerful strategy: “When you notice jealousy, literally say to yourself, ‘I’m feeling
envious right now.’ This act of naming the emotion helps prevent it from controlling your behavior.”
In the meantime, focus on self-care and maintain perspective. Remind yourself of your own unique qualities
that no material possession could ever replace. With patience and understanding, you’ll work through this
temporary imbalance and come out with an even stronger friendship on the other side.
12. What does the author think of friends’ showing off new purchases?
A. It reflects poor financial management skills.
B. It signals a deeper insecurity about self-worth.
C. It’s an understandable but temporary behavior.
D. It demonstrates genuine technological interest.13. What do the underlined words “green-eyed monster” in paragraph 3 refers to?
A. Environmental pollution. B. Intense envy.
C. Social media addiction. D. Peer pressure.
14. What would Catherine advise when one is stuck with the negative emotion?
A. Document your feelings in a journal first.
B. Label the emotion honestly before acting.
C. Compare your friend’s phone with your own.
D. Ask to borrow the phone to reduce curiosity.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Historical development of consumer culture.
B. Approaches to maintaining balanced and lasting friendships.
C. Psychological mechanisms behind material desires and longings.
D. Strategies for managing emotions stimulated by others’ possessions.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. B 15. D

New neighbors were an exciting prospect in our quiet neighborhood. When a couple moved into the house
kitty-corner to us, I looked forward to seeing what they would do with the property. The lot was bare and plain, an
unsightly spot on the street. I couldn't wait for the new owners to grow some nice green grass. A lawn (草坪)
would be a welcome sight when I looked out of our front window at it from across the street.
I thought I had to have mishear d when my new neighbor, Miss LaTrecia. announced she wouldn't be putting
one in. We were standing in front of her house, and I almost dropped to the ground.
“No lawn?” I repeated.
“No lawn,” she confirmed. “At least, not in the front. We'll put grass in the back for our dogs to run around on,
but I have my own plans for the front. I'm going to scatter (撒) wildflower seeds. Just imagine the colors! Plus, my
husband won't have to tend to the lawn all the time.”
She and her husband looked to be in their eighties, and I wanted to be respectful. I struggled to find a polite
way to tell her that I completely disagreed. “This Texas soil... there's so much clay and not much drainage (排水),”I
said. “Planting a bunch of wildflowers will be a lot more taxing than mowing a lawn.”
“Now, now,” Miss LaTrecia insisted, “I have a plan for this yard. We're going to have three rocked tiers... ”
I listened, horrified. If Miss LaTrecia did manage to turn her dream into reality, I feared my front window
view would be worse than it was now.
Over the next few weeks, Miss LaTrecia's yard transformed into something entirely unexpected. True to her
word, she built three rock-edged tiers, filling them with dark soil. Then came the wildflower seeds — dozens of
packets scattered with hopeful abandon. I watched skeptically from my window, convinced the Texas sun and clay-
heavy earth would ruin her project.注意:

To my surprise, tiny green shoots soon pushed through the soil. As the days passed, the shoots grew taller and
stronger, and before long, a riot of colors burst forth. The wildflowers bloomed in a spectacular display — daisies,
sunflowers, and purple coneflowers swayed gently in the breeze, attracting butterflies and bees. The three rock-
edged tiers provided a perfect backdrop, creating a beautiful, natural - looking garden. I found myself staring out of
the window in wonder, realizing how wrong I’d been. The sight was far more beautiful than any ordinary lawn
could ever be.
