In 2013, Alice Ward’s life was falling apart. In quick succession, her relationship with her boyfriend failed and
her dad was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. She always felt a sense of gloom at that time.
To distract herself from real life, she liked to find and take pictures of her unconventional obsession insects.
Sometimes, if she found a beetle or a bee that she particularly liked, she’d post it online. Those posts attracted the
attention of a woman named Lila Higgins, who worked as an entomologist (昆虫学家) at the local natural museum.
After seeing Ward’s pictures, Higgins reached out to see if she would want to visit the museum.
When Ward arrived at the museum, Higgins led her through the different exhibits. Ward was amazed at
different kinds of insects and Higgins showed her a new wonderful world. For the first time in ages, Ward felt
cheerful. Higgins noticed her enthusiasm and suggested Ward work at the museum to help visitors.
“Although without pay, I just strongly wanted to learn more about the insects at the museum,” Ward
remembered. From then on, Ward started to study the insects from Higgins to better fit her job. “Higgins is very
helpful. Although she is a professional entomologist, Higgins is willing to listen to and accept different ideas from
me. She believes I observe the insects more carefully than she does.”
Soon, Ward becomes an expert on insects. She now is a popular host of an online show called Ologies to teach
kids knowledge about insects. Higgins becomes a regular guest on the show. One day, they shared their story with
the audience. Higgins said on the show, “If a person is truly engaged by a particular topic, the learning process will
become the most efficient. With great motivation, learners will naturally feel excited to explore and discover more
about the subject that catches their attention. Kids, go to find your true passion and enjoy the adventure of learning
and exploring.”

2. What did Higgins advise Ward to do?

C. We learn through trial and error. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
【答案】1. C 2. B 3. D 4. B

The barcode (条形码) is an amazing piece of technology. These black-and-white lines represent an item’s
Universal Product Code, which allows a scanner to tell you exactly what the item is and to draw up its price
quickly. The barcode allows for incredible efficiency in tracking and managing goods.
In the early 1970s, grocery leaders came together to figure out a better way to manage goods. First, they came
up with a standard 12-digit Universal Product Code tied to every product, sort of like a phone number that would
ring up, but not a person. Then they picked a range of companies to figure out some way for machines to read it.
The barcode had to be virtually fail-proof, to avoid a scanner reading one product as another. It had to be
simple so that even a cashier in training could quickly run it over a scanner at any angle. It had to be tiny, to fit even
the smallest items. It had to be easily and cheaply printable, so barcoding every item wouldn’t cost a fortune.
The barcode also gave rise to many more kinds of barcodes, including siblings of the original with more lines
representing more numbers and letters, and distant cousins that look nothing like it. One of them in particular is
popular in recent years: the QR code (二维码). That is where the trouble starts.
Though they weren’t very popular at first, QR codes are now used in restaurant menus, installation guides, TV
ads, and so many other things today. They act as physical links to the Internet; point your smartphone at one, and it
will pull up a webpage. The codes can also function in the same way as the original barcode: storing information
about products and scanning with a beep at the register.
The difference is that QR codes can store much, much more information. A traditional barcode represents an
item and its price. A QR code, when used as a barcode, can additionally identify an item’s expiration date, when
and where it was made, and many more little bits of data.
The QR code is leading the next era. Retailers are very excited about the data that can be gained from having amore advanced barcode.
5. What did grocery leaders initially expect from barcodes?
A. They were excellent at being identified.
B. They were eye-catching on the packaging.
C. They were complicated to prevent imitation or cheating.
D. They could store as much product information as possible.
6. What can be learned about the QR code?
A. It will replace the barcode in the future.
B. It has been popular since it appeared.
C. It is easier to understand than the barcode.
D. It is much more functional than the barcode.
7. What has caused the gradual decline of barcodes according to the text?
A. Its expense. B. Its appearance.
C. Its limitation. D. Its complexity.
8. What is the text mainly about?
A. The rise and fall of the barcode.
B. The great change brought by QR codes.
C. The battle between the barcode and the QR code.
D. The evolution of tracking and managing goods.
【答案】5. A 6. D 7. C 8. A

In today’s fast-paced healthcare market, patients are no longer loyal to a single provider network. They split
their care across an average of four to five different provider networks each year. Given the increasing number of
options for where and how consumers can seek care — who can blame them?
To remain competitive, healthcare systems and traditional provider organizations must seek to better
understand patients as healthcare consumers: how they make decisions, what motivates them, and how, where, and
why they are engaging with the broader healthcare system.
Healthcare systems often use the few traditional consumer/patient satisfaction measures to project what
patients may do in the future (e.g., the likelihood a patient will return to the same system for care). But the patient’s
self-reports don’t determine if they will return. For example, someone may plan to work out five times a week but
only make it to the gym once. Healthcare systems shouldn’t rely on patient satisfaction measures to project andaccount for future patient behaviors. Instead, they need to look at what patients actually do.
Leading retailers such as Amazon and Walmart have been using data to better understand different customer
groups for years and employ those findings to decide on the way in which consumers are served. Healthcare
systems are behind in adopting such data-driven practices, but they must accept them to compete for patients in the
long run.
By taking advantage of healthcare and patient behavior data and other resources that already exist across the
healthcare ecosystem, health systems can understand what motivates consumer behaviors and drives their
decisions. This can help health systems to take more targeted steps to reach, engage, and serve healthcare
consumers with their preferences and needs in mind.
Healthcare market will only become more competitive. Only with consumer-focused information can health
systems be prepared to compete for patient share of care in a health economy where supply exceeds current demand
for services.
9. What can be learned about the healthcare market from paragraph 1?
A. It is losing its patients. B. It is highly competitive.
C. It may be replaced one day. D. It should advance with the times.
10. What is the problem with the patient’s self-reports?
A. They are usually negative. B. They are usually confusing.
C They are usually inaccurate. D. They are usually incomplete.
11. What advice is given to healthcare systems according to paragraphs 4 — 5?
A. They should improve their communication with patients.
B. They should analyze patients’ data to learn more about the patients.
C. They should partner with other types of platforms to attract patients.
D. They should promote the preservation of patients’ data in their systems.
12. What is the best title of the text?
A. The healthcare systems are becoming increasingly popular
B. The healthcare systems are working hard to gain patients’ trust
C. The healthcare systems need to better understand patients as consumers
D. The healthcare systems still have a long way to go to improve their service
【答案】9. B 10. C 11. B 12. C
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In my experience and that of many educators, pressure to get good grades and perform up to expectations is
deeply embedded from sixth grade onwards. Because grades and competitive pressure are natural parts of most
students’ education, young people tend to think mainly in “extrinsic (外在的)” terms. ____13____ However, this
can affect their quality of performance and decrease their well-being. Moreover, research suggests that making
tasks dependent on rewards like grades damages the high-quality engagement we seek in school.
According to Self-determination Theory (SDT), there are three basic human needs: autonomy, competence,
and relatedness. From this perspective, what students need most at school is space to feel autonomous, as if they are
capable of succeeding at tasks, and like they are emotionally safe and connected to teachers and peers.
____14____
So why not nurture students’ basic needs at school? You can invite students to pursue their personal interests
by creating projects and assignments that offer chances to explore what they are naturally fond of. ____15____
Give encouraging feedback at the formative stages of projects and assignments to support their competence, while
allowing them to make choices and feel autonomous.
____16____ For instance, after opening class with individual journaling, I invite my ninth graders to share.
Each day, many students raise their hands to offer their reflections to the group. Though many of these same
students are focused on grades at other times, they know there is no reward for this engagement. ____17____
Perhaps for this reason, it also encourages other students to share. In this way, we co-create a shared culture of trust
and mutual support where our needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are nurtured.
A. Acknowledge and accept their negative feelings.
B. Their motivation appears to come from an inner source.
C. What matters is the chance to be heard and maybe well-received.
D. When these needs are met, it is easier for them to access motivation.
E. In other words, they often study hard to get a reward or avoid punishment.
F. With these in mind, I experiment with new ways to motivate students in class.
G. Integrate group work and other daily activities for students to feel relatedness with others.
【答案】13. E 14. D 15. G 16. F 17. B

In the heart of the busy city of New York, where the sounds of rushing cars never stopped, lived a sixteen-year-old girl named Lisa. Unlike her classmates, who were often keen on the latest technology, Lisa had a
preference for knitting (编织).
Lisa’s love for knitting was deeply influenced by her mother, who owned a skilled and creative touch with
needles. Her mother’s passion for knitting and generous spirit of helping others always inspired Lisa to follow in
her footsteps and take up knitting as a meaningful hobby.
Lisa was really good at knitting. She liked to make scarves (围巾), gloves, hats and mini bags for her friends
as well as her relatives. Her hats were created in a variety of styles and colors, each one unique and full of
personality. Whether it was a mini bag or a classic scarf, each knitting work was a carefully crafted masterpiece and
a unique gift full of love and warmth. With beauty and practicality, Lisa’s creations never failed to impress.
One freezing morning in the peak of winter, the city had just been blanketed by a snowstorm that had left
many, particularly the homeless, in desperate situation. As Lisa made her way to school, she noticed a shaking
figure under the bridge near her school. It was a homeless old man she often saw on her way, but today he looked
extremely miserable (可怜的). His face was half-hidden under a piece of worn cloth that hardly served as
protection against the cold. Touched by the sight. Lisa decided to give her scarf to the homeless old man. She
approached, handing the scarf to him.
“For me?” the man asked, his eyes widened with surprise.
“Yes! I thought it might help you against the cold,” Lisa said, her breath visible in the cold air.

【答案】The old man wrapped the scarf, immediately feeling a bit warmer. His trembling fingers traced the
intricate patterns, and tears welled up in his eyes. “Thank you, young lady,” he whispered hoarsely. “No one’s
shown me kindness like this in years.” Lisa smiled, but her heart ached seeing his threadbare gloves. Suddenly, an
idea struck her — what if she could knit for more people like him? That afternoon, she rushed home and rummaged
through her yarn stash, determined to turn her hobby into something bigger.
