English-language editions of two entertaining and insightful novels, Cat Country and Mr Ma and Son, written
by one of China’s most accomplished novelists, Lao She, will soon be on bookshelves around the country.
Cat Country, arguably China’s first venture into the field of science fiction, centers around a space traveler
from China who crash-lands on an alien planet, where he discovers a country inhabited entirely by Cat People.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and literary critic Ian Johnson says in the book’s introduction, Lao She
stretches himself further than ever, producing one of the most remarkable, complicated and insightful novels of
modern China.
The sarcastic humor and metaphorical writing are believed to be influenced by the author’s early experiences
in London. Lao She taught Chinese at the University of London’s School of Oriental Studies from 1924 to 1929,a
time when the British still viewed China and the Chinese with strong mixture of distrust, dismissiveness, guilt and
fear after two opium wars and the Boxer Rebellion(1900).
It was there that he began his career as a writer of patriotic but complex fictions about contemporary China,
writes University of London’s senior Chinese literature lecturer Julia Lovell in the introduction of Mr. Ma and Son,
who calls it “the first Chinese novel to face directly British racism toward China”.
Based on Lao She’s London experiences, the novel displays the Mas’ attempts to deal with the deeply rooted
cultural misconceptions by 1920s English society after they move there to run an antiques shop. As they go about
building their new lives in London and striving to maintain a sense of cultural self, their own relationships are
tested.
“We felt that these two books offer a fascinating insight into how he works and thinks, exploring China’s place
in the world and China’s self-image through evocative and beautiful writing that is as relevant today as it was when
it was first written in the 1930s,” says Jo Lusby, managing director of Penguin China.
4. What does Cat Country stand as in China’s science fiction?
A. A peak. B. A turning point. C. A pioneer. D. A miracle.5. What did Lao She’s London experience contribute to?
A. His teaching career at the University of London.
B. His writing style.
C. His sense of cultural misconceptions.
D. The British distrust of Chinese people.
6. What message is mainly conveyed in Mr. Ma and Son according to the text?
A. Business challenges. B. British racism toward China.
C. Tight family bonds. D. Cross-cultural conflicts.
7. In Jo Lusby’s eyes, the two books ______.
A. provide an angle to look into China’s identity
B. establish Lao She’s status in literature
C. deepen Lao She’s understanding of authoring
D. highlight China’s social conflicts

We often find it hard to tear our eyes away from screens — an urge so intense that it messes with our focus
and our cognitive health, which is known as “brain rot”. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as the degradation of
mental state due to overconsumption of online content. It refers to the dull stuff on social media and its negative
impact on brain health.
“There’s an arms race to develop digital content and platforms that can grab people’s attention and compete in
,
a digital market ” says Adam Leventhal, a professor at the University of Southern California. “Digital content and
platforms that win the competition are increasingly addictive.” Dr. Leventhal adds, “They pull people into ‘digital
addiction’ and expose consumers to unhealthy content.”
Though not an official diagnosis, “brain rot” can cause cognitive and emotional problems. “Too much screen
time can negatively affect attention, concentration, learning, memory, emotional regulation, and social
functioning,” Dr. Manwell says. “Brain rot” occurs as screen time replaces activities beneficial to the brain, such as
exercise and socializing. Passive, rapid scrolling while multitasking or trying to work or study also contributes,
resulting in reduced attentional resources and poorer learning and memory capabilities. Manwell says, “There are
often also corresponding effects on the brain such as reduced gray matter and white matter, leading to damaged
processing capacity and efficiency.”
To fight against “brain rot”, changes can be made. Manwell suggests altering digital media habits, like taking
screen breaks and limiting certain apps. There are apps to track screen time and guarantee digital detox. For long-term improvement, Manwell recommends replacing screen time with activities like meditation, exercise, and
learning new skills. If screen use is work-related, find alternatives like printing materials or having in-person
meetings. When on a screen, focus merely on the task to decline multitasking’s negative effects. Overall, being
aware and making lifestyle adjustments can help prevent and reverse the impact of “brain rot”.
8. According to the text, what do we know about “brain rot”?
A. A kind of serious disease officially diagnosed by doctors.
B. The decline of mental well-being due to overconsuming online materials.
C. The negative impact of overusing digital devices on physical health.
D. The loss of cognitive abilities caused by using digital platforms.
9. What can we infer from Adam Leventhal’s words?
A. People reading digital content on the platforms are becoming unhealthy.
B. Digital platforms are developed to help people improve their mental health.
C. The digital content that wins the attention competition is usually less addictive.
D. The competition among digital content and platforms leads to some negative effects.
10. Which of the following is NOT a way to fight against “brain rot” according to Manwell?
A. Using apps for monitoring the screen time.
B. Having intervals away from the screen and restrict the use of some apps.
C. Focusing on multiple tasks to maximize efficiency when using screen.
D. Looking for alternatives like holding face to face meetings in work.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The harms and solutions of “brain rot”.
B. The effect of addictive digital platforms.
C. The importance of socializing in daily life.
D. The impact of “brain rot” on digital device.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A

In a drawing room in rural Oxfordshire, an artist slowly and deliberately puts pen to paper. Her arm moves
across the canvas, the marks gradually integrating into a portrait of herself. It seems like a moment of creative
expression. But this is no ordinary artist — she is the world’s first humanoid robot artist, Ai-Da. By design, her very
existence brings into question how we define art, and who, or in this case, what, can create it.
Will AI algorithms (算法) and robots like Ai-Da mean the end of human creativity and artistry, or can they
strengthen our own creative potential? When Marcel Duchamp proposed that a urinal (小便池) be considered art,
he flipped the art world on its head. In much the same way, AI-created artworks are changing the standards of theart world, because both were controversial and contain objects that haven’t technically been created by an “artist’s”
hand.
Someone argues that a humanoid artist like Ai-Da represents society’s current fears — the rise of job-stealing
AI algorithms and potential robot domination. But technological revolutions like artificial intelligence don’t necessarily
mean the “end of art” as many fear. Instead, they can help to kickstart an artistic transformation and move us towards
different ways of seeing and creating. “AI might kick us into being creative again as humans,” says mathematician
Du Sautoy, who sees it as a powerful partner in the pursuit of human creativity.
However, questions of authorship haunt the artificial intelligence story. Artists Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst
co-founded Spawning AI, which aimed at empowering human creators to prohibit AI from using their works. But
there are also artists who see AI as a new outlet for their own creativity. Some artists are now even training algorithms in
an attempt to push their own creative boundaries.
It’s clear that AI algorithms and machines like Ai-Da are having an impact on the art world. Their works are
exhibited alongside more traditional forms of art worldwide. Next year we’ll see the world’s first AI art gallery open
its doors in LA. Eva Jäger, the creative AI lead, is also helping to bring AI art to the masses, with a programme of
exhibitions leading to critical discussion about the impact of technology on art. She sees the cooperation between
human and machine as a space for real creative potential.
12. What does the phrase “flipped the art world on its head” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Dominated the art world. B. Overturned the art standards.
C. Broadened artists’ horizons. D. Recognized artists’ wisdom.
13. What influence will Ai-Da generate on the art world according to Du Sautoy?
A. It will increase the commercial value. B. It will replace human artists soon.
C. It may boost human creativity. D. It may cause fears in artists.
.
14 What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Spawning AI helps human artists use AI works.
B. Some artists train AI to work for them.
C. AI art gallery will win over more visitors.
D. Eva Jäger looks favorably to the future of AI.
15. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To argue that AI will eventually outperform human artists.
B. To promote the idea that artworks created by AI lack value.
C. To explore the impact of AI on art definition and creativity.
D. To record the history of art movements and their significance.【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. C

【答案】One possible version:
Our class recently held a debate on whether high school students should have a two-day weekend.
Those in favor argued that it would relieve academic pressure and provide time for hobbies, sports, and family,
thereby promoting all-round development. However, opponents argued that reducing school days might decrease
effective study time and challenge students’ self-discipline, especially given the intense demands of college entrance
exams.
When it comes to my perspective, a two-day weekend is a double-edged sword, the key of which lies in students’
ability to strike a balance between leisure and study.
第二节(满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The image of the staircase in the Smiley Building has haunted my memories for twenty years since high
school graduation. Every school day, I climbed those concrete steps to reach math class or my locker. A naughty
and misbehaved guy called Tom and some of his followers would sit on the staircase, rating others on a scale of 1
to 10 by appearance as they passed by and laughed very loud, impolite, arrogant (自大的) and rude.
Every time I walked up or down those stairs, their laughter echoed in my ears. “Just ignore them,” my mother
advised. And I did. On the surface. But inside the painful message that I was “ugly” stuck deep in my soul. Quite
often, the staircase would appear in my nightmares.
Eventually, I graduated, got admitted to the college, earned a degree in Communications, launched a
rewarding career as a writer and teacher, got married, and raised two amazing boys. But when I looked in the
mirror, the doubts returned, bearing a deep hatred against Tom, his followers and even the school.
When I received an invitation to my twentieth high school reunion, my mother was puzzled as I didn’t like
high school. But I wanted to go back to confront those boys. I wanted to tell them how hurtful and unkind they
were and that I had all the things they’d made me feel I wasn’t worthy of. I practiced my speech in my mind as I
ran errands (出门办事), cooked dinner, and exercised outdoors.Soon, the big day arrived. I put on my favorite blouse, touched up my make-up, and steeled myself for the
coming Friday night, ready for the “fight”.

【答案】However, at the reunion, what I experienced made me feel I really needed to forgive. People present greeted
me with warm smiles and kind words. They complimented my achievements and how well I was doing. I looked
around, trying to find Tom and his group. But most faces were unfamiliar, and the ones who ever laughed at me
together with Tom didn’t seem to have the same arrogance as before. They asked about each other’s updates, including
mine. I started chatting with some of them. They also shared stories about their struggles and growth over the years.
I realized that everyone had changed, and holding onto the past grudges was only weighing me down. My planned
speech wilted (枯萎) on my lips. “But how about Tom?” I was wondering.
