B One day, Vinod Menon, the head of the physics department at the City College of New York, who had to face the unpleasant task of going through almost a year of COVID-lockdown office mail, opened a 9-month-old package, only to find it contained $180,000. Piled notes in 50s and 100s wrapped in paper bands, a letter, and a return address to an alias were all that accompanied the parcel addressed to “Head of the Physics Department.” “I’ve never seen this kind of money in real life in cash form except in movies,” Menon told CNN. “That really floored me, so I just did not know how to react.” 第4页/共11页 学学学科科科网网网(((北北北京京京)))股股股份份份有有有限限限公公公司司司The sender evidently had unshakable faith in the US postal system, and desired to send the cash to poor students looking to pursue physics and other sciences. City College of New York is one of the most-productive public university systems, and the physics department is particularly outstanding. Three Nobelists in physics received their education there, and in 1921 Albert Einstein gave one of his first lectures at the campus. “Assuming that you are a bit curious as to why I am doing this, the reason is straightforward,” the letter read, continuing to explain that its writer had, many years ago, taken advantage of the “excellent educational opportunity” available at City College to study physics, earn a master’s, and pursue a “long, productive, rewarding scientific career.” The alias return address was to Kyle Paisley, a name absent from the university’s graduation logs, at a house in Pensacola, Florida, whose owners apparently had no idea of the donation. After a two-month long investigation revealing nothing linking the money to criminal activity, the Board of Trustees held a vote and decided to keep the money. Dr Menon noted that the gift would provide for two fully-funded scholarships every year for a decade. 24.How did Vinod Menon most likely feel when seeing the cash? A.Shocked. B.Ashamed. C.Worried. D.Excited. 25.Why was Albert Einstein mentioned in the text? A.To introduce Einstein’s achievements. B.To prove that it is not easy to win a Nobel Prize. C.To show the excellence of the physics department. D.To tell that Einstein received education in the physics department. 26.Which words can best describe the writer of the letter? A.Generous and grateful. B.Athletic and cautious. C.Brave and professional. D.Cooperative and caring. 27.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.The writer of the letter was eventually found. B.Dr Menon was in charge of keeping the money. C.The school was careful when handling the money. D.Kyle Paisley is a graduate of the physics department. C A soundly sleeping brain monitors its surroundings. It also can respond to them without waking, a new study finds. For instance, even in a short sleep during the daytime, a person’s brain can sort words correctly into different categories. This is not the first study to show that the sleeping mind can do useful work. Two years ago, researchers in Israel showed the sleeping brain 第5页/共11页 学学学科科科网网网(((北北北京京京)))股股股份份份有有有限限限公公公司司司can learn. Sid Kouider of the National Center for Scientific Research NCSR) in Paris, led the new study. His team recorded brain signals from people -all wide awake -as they classified spoken words as either animals or objects. To do that, the participants would push a button with their right hand when they heard an animal name. Then they’d use their left hand to push a different button when the word represented some other type of object. As each volunteer responded, the researchers tracked their brain activity. They did this by measuring the participants’ brain waves. Such recordings are known as EEGs, a record of electrical activity in the brain. And those EEGs showed that when an individual was about to hit the right button, the brain responded differently than when it was going to hit the left button. Then each participant nodded off. The researchers again made EEGs recording brain activity. As this happened, the researchers played recordings of a different set of words. These showed that the volunteers’ brains continued sorting the words into their proper categories. When a sleeper heard ”horse, “the EEGs looked as if that person was preparing to hit a button with her or his right hand, not the left. Kouider’s team reported its findings in Current Biology. The new data demonstrate one way in which the brain monitors the outside world during sleep. Those results also may help explain why meaningful sounds, such as a baby crying, a spoken name or a siren (警报) warning, may more easily wake someone than other sounds do. 28.What does the new study find about a sleeping brain? A.It can help people to learn. B.It can send signals to people. C.It can respond to the surroundings. D.It can record sounds autonomously. 29.What were the participants asked to do in the study? A.Track their brain activities in person. B.Take part in the whole test while sleeping. C.Repeat the words following the researchers. D.Identify different words by pushing two buttons. 30.Which is less likely to awake people? A.Electric current sounds. B.People’s names. C.Babies’ crying sounds. D.Alerting signals. 31.What is the best title for the text? A.Brains React to Word Types B.Sleeping Brains Are Listening C.Meaningful Sounds Do Count 第6页/共11页 学学学科科科网网网(((北北北京京京)))股股股份份份有有有限限限公公公司司司D.Words Are Sorted in Sound Sleep D Jenny,18, suffering from coughing and speechlessness, came to Sigmund Freud. She’d become depressed, even having no desire to live. During one session, as he tried to help her uncover the source of her sickness, Freud observed Jenny toying with a small handbag. Interpreting the act as an expression of controlled desire, Freud concluded, “No people can keep a secret. If his lips are silent, he chatters with his finger-tips; the details reveal everything.” Sometimes a handbag is just a handbag, but modern research does support the idea that secrecy can be a source of mental and physical sadness. Keeping a secret requires constant effort. In one recent study, subjects asked to hide their sexual orientation performed worse on a spatial ability task, reacted more rudely to criticism, and gave up sooner in a test of handgrip endurance (握力耐力). And the bigger the secret, the harder it is to keep. Another study found that subjects asked to recall a meaningful secret believed hills to be more dangerous and distances to be longer than those asked to recall a small secret. When researchers asked to help move books from their lab, the subjects harboring meaningful secrets lifted fewer piles. Research shows an association between keeping a meaningful secret and illness ranging from the common cold to chronic (慢性的) diseases. It concludes that teens who open their mind to a parent or close friend report fewer physical complaints and less bad behavior, loneliness, and depression than those who sit on their secrets. One reason why secret keeping is such hard work is that secrets, like unwanted thoughts, tend to take up more brain space. Researchers have identified a small class of “repressors”, who experience fewer intrusive (妨 碍的) thoughts about sensitive information they are controlling: they may keep their secrets so tightly wrapped that they manage to hide them even from themselves. 32.What is Paragraph One aimed at? A.Providing an example of depression. B.Showing us how Freud treated Jenny. C.Introducing the topic of secret-keeping. D.Presenting the importance of observing patients. 33.What can we infer from the second paragraph? A.Those keeping secrets didn’t need constant effort. B.Keeping secrets can only cause mental discomfort. C.Keeping a big secret is more challenging than a smaller one. D.Subjects were asked to keep their sexual orientation secret. 34.What can be concluded about teenagers who tell their secrets to parents? A.They react more rudely to criticism. B.Their immune systems are enhanced. C.They have less physical and emotional trouble. 第7页/共11页 学学学科科科网网网(((北北北京京京)))股股股份份份有有有限限限公公公司司司D.They don’t hide any secrets from themselves. 35.What does the underlined word repressors in the last paragraph refer to? A.People who often open their mind to families or friends. B.People who keep secrets so well as if they didn’t exist. C.People who are easily influenced by unwanted thoughts. D.People who are sensitive to the information they are keeping. 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 Play is so much more than just a way to kill the time. Behind every game and puzzle lies a powerful force shaping a child’s development. 36 Dive in, and you’ll discover the science behind it. When children engage in play, they do more than just have fun. They’re actively constructing their brains. . Neural pathways (神经通络), those complex networks responsible for thought, learning, and emotion, are solidified during these leisure activities. Much like constructing a home requires more than just bricks, it’s about laying a strong foundation. For the maturing brain, play is that vital foundation. 37 These connections don’t just serve immediate childlike wonder; they lay the groundwork for future cognitive and emotional adaptability. Beyond cognitive and emotional development, leisure activities are crucial in securing a child’s physical health and coordination (协调性). Whether it’s running or jumping rope, these actions develop a child’s fine motor skills. Such physical engagements push children to be more aware of their body movements and surroundings. 38 Through play, kids develop a symbiotic (共生的) relationship between mind and body. In the dynamic ecosystem of a child’s growth, leisure activities weave in threads of academic enhancement without the traditional pressures of formal education. 39 Beyond the fun, kids are absorbing lessons in logic, pattern recognition, and critical thinking. Similarly, engaging in board games or interactive storytelling sessions introduces them to fundamental math, language, and strategy concepts in a relaxed atmosphere. This stress-free combination of play and learning allows kids to develop academically without realizing they’re on an educational journey. Play is more than just a leisure activity for kids. It’s an essential tool that helps better brain development, physical health and so much more. 40 A.But why, exactly, is play so vital for kids? B.And how, precisely, do you dive in games and puzzles? C.The diversity of play equips the brain with neural connections. D.Take, for instance, the seemingly simple act of assembling a puzzle. 第8页/共11页 学学学科科科网网网(((北北北京京京)))股股股份份份有有有限限限公公公司司司E.Therefore, kids who play more will deal with the difficulties better in the future.
