河北省石家庄市英语学科2004-2005学年度第二学期期末考试试卷4- 无忧考网 C Here are two cars that may some day take the place of today’s automobiles. If everyone drives such a car in the future, there will be less pollution in the air. There will also be more parking space in the cities, and the streets will be less crowed. Three such cars can fit in the space now needed for one car of the usual size. The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive. Driving will be safer, too, and these little cars can go only 65 kilometers per hour. The cars of the future will be fine for getting around a city, but they will not be useful for long trips. If the car is powered by electricity, it will have two batteries-one battery for the motor and one for the horn(喇叭), signals(信号灯), and so on. Little cars which are powered by gas will go 450 kilometers before needing to stop for more gas. If big cars are still used along with the small ones, two sets roads will be needed in the future. Incomes have risen , unemployment has fallen , and cities as New York are bursting with new office buildings . But just a short walk from Manhattan’s skyscrapers , Gorge Brown sits on the sidewalk , cooking a lunch of rice and bits of fish over a can of cooking fuel . He is homeless — one of the 2.3 million people in the US who end up on the street . During the day , Brown collects aluminum cans and sells them for five cents a piece. At night, he sleeps on the street about eight or nine years, something like that,” said the 62-year-old former construction worker. Brown admits he’s had problem with alcohol and had smoked cocaine. But he says he still wants a more stable housing arrangement. He could afford it just with the money he earns by collecting cans and small pieces of metal, if only truly low-income housing were available. However, he sees no hope of finding a affordable housing in New York. With the strong economy and unemployment down, beautiful housing is being built to meet the end. One of the side effects of the strong economy is that rents have been going up. A US report shows rents in New York city rose more than 27 per cent between 1984 and 1999, from US$ 549 to US $700 a month. So, what the majority of people who experience homelessness really need is just some affordable housing help. However, few projects have been built for the poor. Brown, the homeless New Yorker, says he has a daughter who lives in the city but he seldom sees her. She is angry about his drinking and won’t allow it in her house. Smiling, he says he has seven grandchildren whom he’d like to see more often. 71. What kind of life does Brown lead?Homeless and dangerous. B. Poor but happy C. Cold and hungryD.
