Welcome to the Amazon rainforest. As the largest rainforest in the world, it plays an important role in
keeping the balanced ecosystem on the Earth. With an area of around 6 million square kilometers, the Amazon
rainforest is more than half the size of China. This area has a great many species (物种). Actually, one in ten
known species in the world can be found here.
Of the 390,000 plant species known to us, more than 40,000 can be found in the Amazon. There are
different levels (层) in the forest. At the bottom (底部) is a system of roots under the ground. Above that is leaf
litter on the dark forest floor. The next level is made up of shorter plants with large leaves. Then there are the
towering (高耸的) ancient hardwoods, and finally the tops of the trees which are taller than any other level of
trees in the forest. Each level of the forest forms its own little world, home to different kinds of living things.
The Amazon rainforest is a treasure house of species that can be used for food or medicine. What’s more,
the Amazon rainforest breathes life into the planet by producing over 20 percent of all the Earth’s oxygen (O₂). So
it is often known as the “lungs of the planet”.

① There may be no place more dangerous than Death Valley (死亡大峡谷). Death Valley is the hottest and
driest place in North America.
②Death Valley isn’t an easy place to live in. It gets less than two feet of rain a year and it’s hot, too. In July, the temperature often gets over 46℃. There is even a lake that has turned into salt crystals (晶体). But it is cold at
night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into very thin ice. Then the strong wind—like a
large hand—can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can “walk” on their own in Death
Valley.
③The weather condition (状况) in Death Valley is terrible, but it is still full of life. Nothing can stop plants
and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51
kinds of mammals (哺乳动物), 6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren’t all small,
either.
④Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives there. Some plants have roots that go fifty
feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats (更格卢鼠) get the water they need from flowers.
⑤Death Valley really makes a lot of surprises!

Wetlands, the “Earth’s kidneys,” are vital for a healthy planet. They clean our water and provide homes for
wildlife. But for a long time, humans saw them as useless land, filling them in for farms and cities, which caused
water pollution and loss of animal homes.
Thankfully, the story is changing. People now understand the importance of wetlands and are working to
bring them back. A great example is the creation of wetland parks in China, like the Xixi National Wetland Park in
Hangzhou. It shows how humans and nature can live in harmony (和谐).
Protecting wetlands starts with us. We can begin by learning about the wetlands near us and the life they
support. A visit to a wetland park can help us see their beauty and understand their value firsthand. In our dailylives, saving water is also a powerful way to help, as using less water means more clean water can flow to these
areas. Finally, sharing what we’ve learned with friends and family can spread the message of conservation further.
By taking these steps, we can all be part of protecting these wonderful places. Protecting wetlands is not
just about saving nature; it is about protecting our own future.
1.Why are wetlands called the “Earth’s kidneys”?
A.Because they are shaped like kidneys. B.Because they are home to many animals.

B.To explain how to build a wetland park step by step.
C.To list all the animals that can be found in Xixi Wetland Park.
D.To encourage people to protect and live in harmony with wetlands.
Our planet has many amazing places, and one of them is Vinicunca in Peru. Known as the Rainbow
Mountain, it is famous for its bright lines of red, yellow, green, and purple. It is part of the Andes Mountains (安
第斯山脉), the longest mountain chain (山脉) on earth. At 5,200 meters tall, it is even taller than other famous
mountains. Did you know the Andes grow about 1 centimeter higher every year? Visitors say Rainbow Mountain
feels like stepping into a magical world!
The colorful lines come from different rocks under the ground. For example, iron (铁) in the rocks turns red
when it meets air, and a yellow material called sulfur (硫磺) makes the bright yellow lines. Over thousands ofyears, wind and rain slowly washed away dirt and ice, showing these colorful parts. Scientists say it’s like nature
is an artist! The colors also change with the weather—they look bright in sunlight and softer on cloudy days.
Before 2015, Rainbow Mountain was covered in ice. When the ice turned into water because of warmer
weather, the colors became perceptible. Now, many travelers visit it every year. But too many people walking
here can harm the mountain. To protect it, local villagers control the number of visitors and ask everyone to follow
simple rules, like taking rubbish home.
Rainbow Mountain reminds us that earth’s wonders are both beautiful and easily harmed. Saving these
places helps plants, animals, and people who live close by. Everyone can help! If we treat nature kindly, we
protect the mountain. Helping local guides means villagers can protect their home better, and telling friends about
Rainbow Mountain teaches others to care too. Even small steps today can keep this colorful wonder safe for
tomorrow.

There’s a list of natural wonders. They are places that have been sources of wonder ever since people
walked the Earth. As we are now much more familiar with the geography of our planet than before, these natural
wonders have become known to people.
Mount Everest in the Himalayas is the highest mountain on Earth. The Great Barrier Reef along the
northeast coast of Australia is the world’s largest coral reef. The Grand Canyon (峡谷) around the Colorado River
in the United States is the largest canyon in the world. Victoria Falls is an amazing 100-metre-high waterfall in
Africa, and its 1,700-metre width as well as its height is truly breathtaking. The Dead Sea is the Earth’s lowest
point on land and its water is so salty that no fish or plants can live in it, giving it the name “Dead Sea”. Its salt
concentration (浓度) is about 34%, nearly ten times that of ordinary seawater, which makes it easy for people to
stay on the surface without sinking. Paricutin is perhaps the world’s youngest volcano (火山). It came out of a
cornfield west of Mexico in 1943! In the first year it grew 336m high. Now it is 424m high. The northern lights
are a natural phenomenon (现象) that appears on winter nights in certain areas.
Some may think that these natural wonders are even more wonderful than the human-made wonders. Man-

Have you ever seen those tall, pointed mountains that look like something from a fairy tale? Or explored
huge caves full of strange shapes? These are part of karst landscapes (喀斯特地貌), a natural wonder that China is
famous for.
Karst is a special landform formed over millions of years. When rainwater, which is slightly acidic (酸性
的), falls on limestone (a type of rock), it slowly breaks down the rock. This process creates amazing shapes on
the surface and underground. In China, you can find some of the most breathtaking karst scenery in the world.
The Stone Forest (Shilin) in Yunnan is a fantastic example. It looks like a real forest made of stone!
Walking through it, you will be amazed by the countless stone peaks and towers. Local Yi people even have a
famous festival there. Another world-famous site is the South China Karst in Guilin and Yangshuo. The landscape
there has the feature of green-covered karst hills standing along the beautiful Li River. It is so beautiful that it
appears on the back of the 20-yuan Chinese banknote. Taking a boat trip along the river is like traveling through a
Chinese painting.
Besides the beautiful surface views, karst areas also hide unbelievable underground worlds, such as the
Reed Flute Cave in Guilin. Inside, you can see stunning stalactites (hanging from the ceiling) and stalagmites
(rising from the floor), all lit up by colorful lights, creating a magical scene.
These karst landscapes are not just beautiful; they are also valuable for scientific research. However, they
face threats from pollution and too much tourism. Protecting these natural wonders is very important so that future
generations can also enjoy their beauty.
