Hukou Waterfall is always compared to a shining pearl (明珠) in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. When the Yellow River runs through mountains to Hukou, the river narrows (变窄) from 300 meters to just over 50 meters. The water suddenly falls into a deep pool. As a result, a wonderful waterfall appears. It seems that the water pours into a big pot, which is how it got the name “Hukou”. The power of the waterfall is tremendous (巨大的) when it falls, so it is hard for you to get close to the main waterfall. Looking from far away, you can enjoy the amazing fog-covered water. The beauty cannot be described in words. You cannot know unless you visit it in person. There are four wonders of Hukou, “smoking in water”, “colourful bridge to the sky”, “dragons playing with waves” and “thunder generated from valley stream”. The waterfall flies straight down with water splashing (溅), clouds and mist rising. Under the sunlight, you will see a rainbow hanging over the waterfall. The poem “Chant to Hukou” written by Zhang Yingchun in the Ming Dynasty describes the beauty of “colourful bridge to the sky”. The view of Hukou Waterfall changes according to the seasons. So you can enjoy its special beauty from spring to winter. 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。 1.How does the writer start the text? 2.Why is this waterfall called Hukou Waterfall? 3.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?4.Which of the four wonders of Hukou Waterfall was written in the poem? 5.If you have a holiday, where will you go? Many of the world’s great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through. That plays an important part in the lives of its people. Most rivers begin in mountains and end in the oceans. Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the USA is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation. Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it. Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam(大坝)across a river and let a lake from behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate(灌溉)their field but also to make electricity for their homes and industries. However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits of the natural resources. 1.How many rivers does almost every country have flowing through? 2.Where do most rivers begin?3.What is the greatest river for navigation? 4.Can people use the water from the dam to make electricity? 5.Why is the water in the river polluted? 【答案】1.At least one. 2.In mountains. 3.The Amazon in Brazil. 4.Yes, they can. 5. If a city shows axial symmetry, its central axis is the key line. In July, 2024, the “Beijing Central Axis: A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming China’s 59th World Heritage Site. The Beijing Central Axis has a group of buildings and historical sites that shape Beijing’s old city. Running 7.8 kilometers from north to south in central Beijing, this area includes 15 key parts, such as the Bell and Drum Towers in the north and Yongdingmen Gate in the south. The building of the Beijing Central Axis began in the 13th century and took shape in the 16th century. According to Lyu Zhou, director of the National Heritage Center at Tsinghua University, this idea of city planning dates back to the Kaogongji, written before 221 BC. This book explains how to plan a capital city. The Beijing Central Axis shows traditional Chinese ideas of “zhong (中)” and “he (和)”. For example, the royal palace was placed at the center, with other important buildings placed around it to create a sense of harmony. “Beijing’s unique and great order is created by this central axis,” said Liang Sicheng (1901-1972), a famous Chinese architect. 1.When was the Beijing Central Axis added to the UNESCO World Heritage List? 2.How long is the Beijing Central Axis? 3.Where does the idea of the capital city planning come from? 4.Why were other important buildings placed around the royal palace? 5.What do you think of the Beijing Central Axis? 【答案】1.In July, 2024. 2.It is 7.8 kilometers long. 3.It comes from the Kaogongji. 4.Tocreate a sense of harmony. 5.I think the Beijing Central Axis is very important and unique.
