六、Teaching Procedure
Step 1: Warming-up (5 minutes)
1. Greet the students and have a free talk.
Ask students about their weekends and if they went to any public places.
Lead to the topic of rules by asking if they noticed any rules in those places.
2. Show some pictures of public places such as libraries, schools, and parks. Ask
students what they think the rules might be in these places.
Step 2: Presentation (10 minutes)
1. Present the Grammar Focus sentences on the PPT.
Read the sentences aloud with the students.
Ask students to circle the words that introduce reasons and discuss why
these words are used.
2. Explain the usage of the modal verbs "can", "have to / must", and "can't /
mustn't" through examples.
For example: "We can eat in the dining hall." (permission) "We have to/must
be quiet in the library." (obligation) "We can't run in the hallway." (prohibition)
Compare and contrast "have to" and "must", emphasizing that "have to" is
more about external requirements, while "must" is more about internal obligation or
moral imperative.
Step 3: Practice (15 minutes)
1. 3a: Read the sentences. Circle the word that introduces a reason.
Have students read the sentences in 3a individually.
Ask them to circle the words that introduce reasons and then share their
answers with the class.
Discuss the reasons together and explain the meaning of each sentence.
2. 3b: Complete the sentences using can, have to / must, or can't / mustn't.
Students work individually to complete the sentences.
Invite some students to write their answers on the blackboard.
Check the answers together and explain any mistakes or difficulties.
3. Group work: Make rules
Divide students into groups of four.
Each group is given a picture of a public place (library, school dining hall,

Encourage them to think of as many rules as possible.
Step 4: Production (10 minutes)
1. Have each group present their rules to the class.

2. Discussion: Which rules do you think are the most important? Why?
Start a class discussion on the importance of different rules.
Encourage students to express their opinions and reasons.
Step 5: Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
1. Summarize the key points of this lesson: the usage of the modal verbs and how
to write rules.
2. Homework assignment:
Write a short passage about the rules in your school, using at least five
sentences with the modal verbs.
Observe the rules in a public place and write down your feelings and
thoughts.
