When Clara Temple was in first grade, about six years ago, she was used to bringing her lunch from home.
Every day, she would pack her lunchbox with a sandwich, fruit, and a snack, and eagerly join her friends in the
cafeteria.
But one day, there was a mix-up, and she was told to get a hot lunch from the cafeteria instead. As Clara
stood in line, she noticed the other kids were entering their student ID numbers on a keypad before receiving their
meals. But because it was the first time she had ordered lunch from the school, she didn’t remember her student ID
number. She knew that every student was offered a student ID.but she just couldn’t remember it no matter how
hard she tried. Panic set in as she moved closer to the front of the line. “When it came time to type in my number, I
froze, and I felt embarrassed, like everyone was watching me,” Clara, now 12 years old, recalled.
The kids behind her began to grow impatient, saying things like, “Come on, hurry up, what are you doing?”The pressure made Clara feel even more self-conscious. Her embarrassment turned into tears, and she felt
completely overwhelmed. She crumpled to (瘫倒) the floor, unable to stop crying. The worker at the register and a
few friends tried to help, but Clara was too upset to regain her composure (镇定) . That’s when her unsung hero
appeared — one of the lunch ladies working in the cafeteria, who noticed the scene and rushed over to help.
“The lunch lady stopped everything she was doing,” Clara remembered. “She came over. gently picked me
up, and helped me back on my feet.” Although Clara was still crying, the lunch lady seemed to know exactly what
to do. With a calm voice, she helped Clara remember her student ID number. Clara got her lunch this time. “I just
felt so comfortable,” Clara said. “It was like she truly understood how I was feeling in that moment, without saying
much.”

It was a cold winter with thick snow on the ground. Everything was frozen solid. As we hadn’t heating
equipment in our classroom, most of us wore thick and warm clothes. Then, by chance I discovered under Henry’s
dirty woolen coat, there was just a short-sleeved shirt.
It was so strange that I couldn’t help wondering whether Henry was crazy to make such a choice. I told thisto the boys in my class. “How stupid!” We all ran to see Henry and jokingly pulled off his coat. Henry stepped
back, shaking with both cold and anger. I found that tears welled into his eyes.
When I went back home, I told Mom about “the stupid choice” Henry had made. Mom fell silent. Then she
made a phone call. The next day, she told me to bring a package to the school. “Give it to Henry. Tell him to put on
the clothes in it.”
“Why?” As a fourth-grader, I wasn’t wise enough to see something hidden behind. It was years later that I
understood that Henry’s family only had basic necessities, and there was little money for something else beyond
food and shelter. Mom hugged me and said softly, “Guess why a hungry person doesn’t eat?” “Because he can’t get
any food to eat,” I answered loudly. “Exactly,” Mom said. “So, why doesn’t Henry wear a thick and warm
sweater?” I was aware of the meaning of my mother’s words.
It made me feel guilty. Mom said it was unkind to make fun of disadvantaged people. And Mom also told me
to “see” through my heart, but not just through my eyes. I wondered “How?”
At the end of the term, the teacher told us we were going to take a class picture as, for some reason, we
would break up when we stepped into the fifth grade. Twenty-two students lined up in three rows and faced the
camera with happy smiles. The teacher told us anyone who paid a dollar would bring a class picture back home. I
could hardly wait to get my first class picture.

For Tiara Miller, that Sunday started like a normal day. The sun was out, and everything seemed calm. But
when she got home, she saw something was wrong with her outdoor Christmas things. From far away, she couldn't
tell what it was. But when she got closer, she knew right away: there had been a fire.
Tiara felt really bad when she saw the burned parts of her nice Christmas decorations. There was a black
mark on the side of her house from the fire, and she could still smell a little smoke. She was scared when she
thought about how much worse it could have been. What if the fire had spread to the house? What if no one had
noticed it in time?
Quickly, she rushed inside and grabbed her phone to check the video from her Ring Doorbell camera. Her
hands were shaking as she scrolled through the footage(片段镜头), desperate to find out what had happened.
When she finally watched the video, she saw two young people walking by. They were casually chatting and
laughing, seemingly enjoying a pleasant day. But then, their expressions changed as they noticed a small fire
starting from a cord(电线) that had too much stuff plugged(插进) into it. Without hesitation, they sprang into
action. One of them, a tall boy, quickly pulled out the overloaded cord from the outlet(插座), while the other young
stamped on the small flames that were starting to spread. Their quick thinking and bravery were evident as they
worked together to put out the fire. Thanks to their efforts, the fire didn't have a chance to grow and engulf(吞没)
her home.
Tiara was extremely grateful. She knew that if not for these two kind-hearted teens, Ronald and Shaine, her house
might have been seriously damaged. She made up her mind to find them and express her sincere thanks. 注意:1.

In today’s world, where negativity often takes center stage, it’s easy to overlook the simple acts of kindness
that can bring joy to someone’s life. I recently had a personal experience that reminded me of this during a
particularly challenging week.
My week had been filled with problems, from work-related stress to unexpected bills and broken items. By
the time I needed to go to the store for a few essentials, I was already feeling overwhelmed and at my breaking
point. Despite my desire to just go home and relax, I made the trip across town to the store.
When I arrived, I found the parking lot packed, which only added to my frustration. To make matters worse,
the person next to my intended parking spot seemed to think their small car was entitled (有资格) to take up two
spaces. After finally finding a spot, I realized that I had left my purse, including my debit card (借记卡) and
checkbook (支票簿), at home. Fortunately, I had a small amount of cash and my coupon (优惠券) book, so I
decided to go inside and make the best of it.
The store was bustling with people, but I managed to find the items I needed and got in line to check out.
However, the line seemed to move at a snail’s pace, and my patience was wearing thin. As I waited, I couldn’t help
but feel my stress levels rising.
That’s when I noticed an old lady standing behind me in line. She seemed to sense my anxiety and cast a
kind smile at me. I awkwardly returned the smile and continued to wait. After a seemingly endless wait, it was
finally my turn to check out.

Volcanic ash from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull made Europe’s airports shut down for nearly a week, leaving
thousands of passengers stranded (滞留) across the globe. Among them was Agnes’s mother, Sophia Atila Kafu,
who was stuck at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, nearly 4,000 miles away from Agnes, who was in Canada,
waiting for her mother to attend her graduation ceremony.
This would hardly be notable were it not for the fact that Sophia was 64, had never been outside Kenya, had
never been on a plane, had never been inside an airport, spoke only Swahili (斯瓦希里语), carried only 25 euros
and didn’t have a working mobile.
By the time Agnes realized something was wrong, Sophia had already been stranded at Schiphol for 19
hours. She had some emergency contact details with her but, so far, no call had been made or received.
Realizing that her mother was unable to seek help, Agnes called the airline, KLM (荷兰航空), to ask if they
could search for her. The airline told her that there was too much chaos in the airport and that they would not be
able to locate one particular person.
Unable to rest, Agnes contacted her friends and her colleagues for help. Soon, there were people from
Boston, Toronto, New York and San Francisco working on a solution. By now, Sophia had been stranded for nearly
40 hours.
One of Agnes’s friends sent an email to her contacts titled “Urgently need your networking help!” It begged,
“Do you know anyone who’s stranded in Amsterdam, or know anyone whose Facebook friends or Twitter followers
might be there?”
This email spread quickly among friends of friends. Within two hours, the email went into the inbox of
George Bougias, the manager of Delta Airlines (a KLM partner). George happened to know Swahili. A few minuteslater, George was on his way to the airport. He and six security agents began to comb the airport.

In the hub of a city, sandwiched between skyscrapers and high-rises was a tiny but vibrant animal shelter by
the name of “Paws Home”. Serving as a nice haven for numerous homeless animals, it offered food, shelter and
care.
One day, young Jack and Grace walked by the shelter and noticed a sign for a voluntary service.
Jack was absorbed immediately, “Grace, just take into consideration those sad animals in urgent need of
help. Let’s join to be volunteers.”
Grace, however, showed somewhat uncertainty, “I am not sure, Jack, voluntary service takes hard work, and
we have school to go to and something else to do.”
Jack insisted, “just think about what a meaningful difference we would make to the homeless animals. Don’t
hesitate! Do it now!” Eventually, Grace nodded.
Both Jack and Grace ran to the animal shelter and sprang into action. Sweeping the shelter, feeding the
animals and having games with them were great fun for them. With days passing, they became attached to the
lovely creatures and felt a sense of pride. On one Sunday afternoon full of sunshine, when making nice meals for the lovely, Jack happened to hear a
conversation, leaving him worried. The shelter’s director, Mr. Frank, was telling a worker a financial crisis Paws
Home was faced with. As donations were declining and running costs were rising, the shelter was on the verge (边
缘) of being closed. “The shelter will stop in the near future”, sighed Mr. Frank.
Jack told Grace the news promptly. Surely, both of them felt how urgent it was to find a way out. “We can’t
wait doing nothing,” Grace said, resolve shining in her eyes, “we have to take action again.”
They immediately put forward a good plan: stage a community fundraising called “An Evening for Paws” —
animals talent show, bake sale and auction (拍卖) on the square.
The weeks that followed saw how busy they were. Jack persuaded some local shops to donate pet supplies,
baked goods, and art works for the auction. At the same time, Grace promoted the event online, attracting attention
fast. She designed posters which would appear in the neighborhood.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday, I was part of an act of kindness and it seemed as if the world was giving me a message to
always be humble, kind and willing to help others to the extent possible.
At 6 o’clock, while I was on my way to my uncle's, there was a lady who was asking for a lift. I could sense
that she was in a hurry, and it was too early to find a car at such a time. I stopped my car, picked her up and droppedher where I could. She thanked me and left. I was happy that I did what I did.
Then, around 7: 00 pm, I left my uncle’s house. Because I drank with my uncle, I hired a driver. Since it was
getting late to reach back home and began to rain hard, I was as anxious and restless. On the way, the driver put on
the brakes a bit too hard and the vehicle stopped in the middle of the road.
I was frustrated, and a little part of me wanted to help by pushing the vehicle or doing something else, but a
major part of me wanted to leave the car behind, book a taxi and leave the place. I was fighting in this decision-
making and acted upon neither, while the car driver was trying his best to get the vehicle started, by starting the
engine again and again. Seeing us stuck there, a load car stopped. There came two men from the load car, and they
offered to help us out by pushing our vehicle.
Our car had managed to get started by itself by the time the helpers came, but that little act of kindness
seemed so special and put a smile on my face as well as the driver’s.
When we both thanked the two of them, they didn’t even make it a bit deal and was rather surprised that we
were even thanking for such a small act I felt a little embarrassed that I did not offer to help as the helpers did.

In the bustling city of Harmony, where towering skyscrapers mirrored the ambitions of its inhabitants, lived ayoung man named Li Ming. He was an ordinary high school student with extraordinary dreams. Li Ming often
pondered about his role in society, wondering how he could contribute positively to the world around him. One day,
as he walked home from school, he noticed an old lady struggling to carry a heavy bag of groceries. Without
hesitation, he rushed to her side and offered his help.
The old lady, Mrs. Zhang, smiled warmly at Li Ming’s unexpected kindness. “Thank you, young man.
You’ve made my day much easier,” she said, her eyes twinkling with gratitude. Li Ming, feeling a sense of
accomplishment, replied, “It's my pleasure, Mrs. Zhang. We all need a helping hand sometimes.”
As they walked together, Mrs. Zhang shared stories of her youth, how she had volunteered in her community
and how those experiences had shaped her into the compassionate person she was today. Li Ming listened intently,
realizing that small acts of kindness could ripple through society, inspiring others to do the same.
Inspired by Mrs. Zhang’s words, Li Ming decided to take action. He approached his school’s principal, Ms.
Wang, with an idea for a community service club. “Ms. Wang, I believe that by working together, we can make a
real difference in our community,” he explained passionately. Ms. Wang, always supportive of her students’
initiatives, agreed and provided the necessary resources to kickstart the club. The club, named “Harmony Helpers”,
quickly gained popularity among students. They organized various activities, such as cleaning public parks, visiting
local nursing homes, and assisting at food banks. Li Ming and his fellow club members found immense joy in
giving back to their community, seeing the smiles on the faces of those they helped.

On Christmas Eve 2022, Yvonne White received a call about her brother Joey, who had been found in a
snowbank by Sha’ Kyra Aughtry during a severe snowstorm in Buffalo.
Joey White, 64 and mentally disabled, eventually ventured out, although Yvonne had telephoned and
instructed him not to leave the his group home and stay indoors. It was unclear that when and why Joey had left
home, but Yvonne suspected Joey had walked about 9 miles to North Park Theater, where he had worked as a
janitor (保洁员) about since 1980. Joey’s employer, Ray Barker, reminded that he had called him not come to work
due to the terrible weather before the deadly snowstorm hit Buffalo. “For someone it is hard not to engage the
working pattern that he’s used to being in.” he added, explaining that during the pandemic Joey still showed up for
work when the theater was closed.
At around 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 24, Joey ended up in a snowbank directly outside Aughtry’s home, severely
frostbitten (冻伤), wailing and crying out in pain. Aughtry happened to go outside and found the stranger. She
managed to carry him into her home and used the hair dryer to peel off Joey’s clothing, which attached tightly to his
shivering body, his frozen socks and the grocery store bag in his frozen hands.
Aughtry, a mother of three, did everything she could to care for Joey. She covered Joey up, washed his
clothes, bathed and fed him. After about an hour of trying to warm the old stranger up, she found he needed medical
attention immediately due to his severe frostbitten.
However, The storm was so heavy that the roads were glazed in ice and snow completely. The roads were
impassable, and despite numerous calls to 911, help seemed unreachable. Seemingly, getting the professional
medical help was in vain, too.
Fortunately, Joey had memorized his sister’s phone number. Then, Aughtry got in touch with his sister
Yvonne White, who couldn’t also leave her home to her brother because of the snow. The woman had to stay in
constant communication with Aughtry on phone from then on.

On a particularly gloomy Wednesday afternoon, Edison and his mother, Ami, were seated in their cozy living
room, their attention fixed on the television screen. The news broadcast was filled with heart-wrenching images of
the wildfires in Maui. Flames engulfed homes, smoke billowed into the sky, and families were forced to flee with
only the clothes on their backs. Edison, his small brow furrowed in deep concern, turned to his mother with
pleading eyes. His voice, laced with emotion, trembled as he said, “Mom, please turn it off. These pictures are
making me feel so sad. I can’t bear to see all those people suffering.”
Following this, he began to pose profound questions that revealed the depth of his compassion. “Mom, do
the kids in Maui have no toys left to play with? What about their beds? Where will they sleep at night? Won’t they
be scared and cold?” After asking these questions, he sank into a deep silence, his young mind wrestling with the
vastness of the situation. Clearly, the problem was weighing heavily on him, and finding a solution seemed like an
overwhelming challenge.
But Edison’s spirit of determination and his innate kindness refused to be dampened. Just then, a glimmer of
inspiration sparked in his bright eyes. He excitedly tugged at his mother’s sleeve and exclaimed, “Mom, I have an
idea! I remember seeing a lemonade stand in our neighborhood once. We could set one up too! Maybe we can sell
lemonade and use the money to help those people in Maui.” His resolve was unwavering; every single penny theyearned would be donated to the wildfire victims. Ami, taken aback by her son’s selfless and creative idea, was filled
with a profound sense of pride.

On the school bus back home, David sat there, recollecting the great soccer game he played that day.
“Excuse me, may I sit here?” David was so deep in his own thoughts that he didn’t realize Guillermo, one of his
classmates, had asked permission to sit next to him.
Guillermo was a true fan of David’s game. David was everything he wanted to be. He wanted to play like
him, have tons of friends like him, and even wear those fancy soccer shoes David was wearing.
Today, the shy boy finally found the courage to talk to his hero. “Hi, David! I’m Guillermo, your biggest fan.
You’re my hero.” “Oh? Hi, Guillermo! Thank you.” There was an awkward silence. “I ... really like your shoes!”
Guillermo blurted (脱口而出) the first thing that came to his mind.
“These? These are old. You should see the new shoes I’ll be getting!” David’s eyes lit up, thinking about the
dreamy sneakers (运动鞋) he had been saving up for. This was the first time the 15-year-old wanted to buy
something for himself. And he didn’t want to bother his mother. He had saved enough money from deliveringnewspapers and selling lemonade.
“Tell me more about them!” Guillermo said, slowly hiding his feet under the seat. “Well, they’re perfect!
Actually, I’m heading to the store right after homework this evening to buy them. Let’s go together!” David said.
Guillermo was truly happy for his idol (偶像).
That’s when the bus suddenly jolted (颠簸) over a pothole (路面坑洞), and one of Guillermo’s shoes fell off
onto the bus floor. David was taken aback at the sight of the worn - out, blackened shoe. Tears welled up in David’s
eyes as he watched his friend hide his face in his hands, crying quietly but uncontrollably.
The rest of the bus ride passed in silence. When they finally reached their stop, David reminded Guillermo to
meet at 5 o’clock. There was no way David was going to the store a-lone. Not after what he had seen.
Later, as the two boys entered the store, Mr. Manning, the owner, warmly greeted them. He had already
prepared David’s new shoes, neatly packed and ready.

While others played video games or hung out with friends after school, thirteen-year-old Ethan spent his
afternoons running a small lemonade stand (柠檬水摊位) near the old trailer (活动房屋), which was all Ethan andhis mother had. So Ethan always dreamed of giving his mother a real house. And every penny he earned went into
his “House Fund”.
Despite his busy business, Ethan never gave up his schoolwork. He knew that good grades were key to a
better future, and he dreamed of attending college one day—though he knew that dream was even further out of
reach than the house.
On an extremely hot summer day, a suited man, who obviously didn’t belong to the poor neighborhood,
happened to pass by Ethan’s stand. He was immediately attracted and said, “Hot day,” reaching for his wallet. “I’ll
take a lemonade.”
“Sure thing,” Ethan replied, pouring a glass with his usual care. As the man sipped (抿) the lemonade, he
watched Ethan closely.
“You’re quite the entrepreneur (企业家),” the man commented. “How long have you been running this
stand?”
“About a year,” Ethan answered. “I’m saving up to buy my mom a house one day.”
The man raised an eyebrow, curious. “That’s a big dream for someone your age. Tell me more.”
Encouraged by the man’s words, Ethan opened up about his life, his mother’s struggles, and his eagerness to
improve their living conditions. The man listened attentively, nodding in understanding and appreciation of Ethan’s
dreams.
When Ethan finished, the man smiled. “You’ve got a lot of heart, kid. More than most people I know. But
education always takes priority at your age.” He reached into his wallet and handed Ethan a cheque (支票) and his
business card. “Consider this an investment in your future.”
Ethan’s eyes widened in shock. “I... I can’t take that.” “Sure you can,” the man insisted.

On December 1 of 2023, I made a deal with myself that I would give $1 to every homeless person who
asked. Still, to be honest, I started this practice thinking that I would just bleed money, and that I would run out of
money soon. This never happened. When I returned to Massachusetts, it took 8 days before I walked past a
homeless person who asked me for some spare change. I was wondering, “How could I step it up?!?”
Fast forward to last week. On my way to my MIT new year performance, I ran across a homeless person —
Tommy. I gave Tommy $1. Tommy was in tears. After a big hug, he went on to tell me that nobody listened to him.
Nobody looked at him, people just walked right by him without leaving anything and didn’t even acknowledge that
he was alive. My heart broke. We hugged on the street for a few seconds and then we went into the local
McDonalds where I ordered him a #6 fish meal (supersized of course!). After the meal, I told him I had to run and
said I’d see him soon.
The next day, when I walked past Tommy, I gave him a dollar again. But this time, I sat with Tommy, in the
cold, for an hour and a half. Mostly I just listened and was extremely humbled (感到卑微) by the experience of
simply sitting and watching my perspective change from being someone who simply walks by to someone who’s
now an unprivileged pan-handler. As we were talking, he was telling me about how upset he becomes when people
don’t acknowledge him or they’ll crack up at his funny sign (“Voldermort (伏地魔) broke my life. Feeling hopeless
and Needing $ for a new start”). I knew right then that I was going to give him everything I had. Before I left, I
didn’t even count the money in my wallet. I just gave it all, it was probably more than $200. I didn’t miss it. More
will come and go in the future.
At that moment, I just wanted to convince him that what I offered was not just money.

One afternoon, Debbie was relaxing at home when the doorbell rang unexpectedly. Standing at the doer was
16-year-old Amy from next door, looking very pale and worried. “Help! My brother Dylan is bleeding!” she cried.
Debbie followed Amy to her house, where 8-year-al d Dylan was sitting on the floor, holding his arm tightly,
with blood pouring through his fingers. A piece of glass was on the ground nearby, and a broken hole in the glass
door showed what had happened. Dylan had been running indoors and fell, accidentally putting his arm through the
door.
Amy, visibly shaken, said in a trembling voice that their mum had just gone out to the store, leaving her in
charge. Though frightened herself, Debbie took control of the situation. She had recently taken a first aid course
and remembered the importance of applying pressure to stop bleeding. “Amy, grab a towel!” she instructed while
rushing to Dylan’s side.
Debbie pressed the towel firmly on the wound, trying to stop the blood flow, and spoke gently to. Dylan to
calm him down. “You’re doing great,” she said to comfort him, even though her hands-were shaking. Dvlan,
looking pale and scared, cried softly but nodded at her words. Meanwhile, Amy called for an ambulance, describing
Dylan’s condıtion and their address with as much calm as she could-manage.
Just then, Dylan’s mum returned, horrified-to find her son injured. Dropping her shopping bags, she rushed
to his side, her voice breaking as she asked what had happened. Debbie quickly explained and encouraged her to
help applying pressure to the wound while they waited for the paramedics.
