Police recently caught a group of senior citizens. They were all
neighbors and working together. One person in the group stole
items from stores, and another person took them back to the
store to get a refund.
When three roommates bought a $20 couch from a second-

found the reason. Inside the couch, there were some envelopes.
Each envelope had money in it—$41,000 in all! At first, they started

noticed a name on one of the envelopes. After some research, they found the owner of the

Dough Bruce, 35, walked into Coney Island Police Station on 3 July 2003. “I woke up
on the subway a few minutes ago. I don’t know where I’m going, where I’ve been. I
have no idea who I am,” he told the police. He had a backpack with a few things in it: a
Spanish phrase book, a set of keys and a map of New York. “I don’t know anything. It
was like being 65 ,” he later said of the experience.
The police were confused. “We’ve never had
anything like this before,” Lt. Peter Pena said.
They took Doug to Coney Island Hospital.
The nurse had to put a special name

dogs and three parrots. Dough discovered that he had lived in Paris, where he made a
lot of money working at the stock exchange[2]. 69 , he was tired of the business
world, so he moved to New York and started a four-year photography course.
Now that Doug had discovered who he was, he had to face other challenges. He was
worried about seeing his family and friends. They were like strangers to him. His sister
said that he had changed: before his memory loss, he was very sociable and outgoing,

2022学年度第二学期初三练习卷 · 英语学科 共10页 第 8 页Jack London was born in California, USA, in 1876. As a
young man in 1897, he took part in the famous Klondike
Gold Rush, when a huge number of people rushed to the
Yukon in Canada to look for gold. When London returned
to California in 1898, he started writing stories. His novels
The Call of the Wild and White Fang are based on his
experiences in the Yukon. He died in 1916.
An extract[1] from
The call of the wild
Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not
know that trouble was coming for every big dog in
California. Men had found gold in the Yukon, and
these men wanted big, strong dogs to work in the cold
and snow of the north.
Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara valley. There
were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby.
In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs
and farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was chief dog; he was born
here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He
went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons and walking with his daughters. He
carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of
the fire in winter.
But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying
to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of
Mr Miller’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr
Miller was out, Mannuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening
walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at
the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then
he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.
Buck growled[2], and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around
his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was
on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable
to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.
When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and
watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard.
Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.
