Do you ever find yourself doing something without thinking about it? We do lots
of things automatically, out of habit rather than for any good reason. Learning to
create healthy new habits can help you reach your goals.
What is a habit?
Scientists say habits are formed in the brain and include a cause, action and a
reward. ____45____, if you are used to watching TV when you get home from school,
the cause would becoming home from school; the action is turning on the TV; and the
reward might be the happy, relaxed feeling from watching your favourite program.
This good feeling makes you want to do the ____46____ thing after school the next
day again, and over time it can become a habit.
How are habits good for you?
Turning something into a habit means you don’t have to think about it, which is
good news when it’s healthy. Good habits can help ____47____ bad ones too, such as
worrying. Sadie finds her habit of playing with fidget toys(指尖玩具)reduces
____48____. “They help me relax and stay focused,” she says. Scientists believe
nearly half of the things we do every day is out of habit, so forming helpful habits is
____49____ a great way to help you reach your goals.
How can you start to build healthy new habits?
Dr. Radha Modgil notes it’s important to think about why you want to change.
When it’s time to begin, “Try the 1% idea, where every day you improve or change
something by 1%. That way you start to see ____50____ and you’re not discouraged(灰心的)by failure,” she says. Remember forming new habits isn’t always easy,
but it will be worth it in the end.

Can Animals Predict Earthquakes?
Dear Scientist Sam,
I noticed my dog acting very nervously only a few minutes before a recent
earthquake shook the house. Is it ____50____ that my dog knew the earthquake
was going to happen?
Janet
Sam’s reply:
Well, Janet, people have believed for many centuries that animals can
predict earthquakes. In fact, we can look ____51____ to what we know from
the ancient Greeks. They noticed that animals acted strangely in the hours
before earthquakes. Even now, people talk about dogs that won’t stop barking
and cats that won’t come out of hiding before an earthquake. Furthermore,
strange behavior like this before earthquakes isn’t limited to pets. People have
also reported seeing chickens laying no eggs, bees leaving their homes, and big
groups of fish ____52____ and floating here and there in the hours before a
natural disaster hits.
It’s hard to answer your question, since not all seismologists(地震学家)
or animal experts agree that animals can predict earthquakes. Those thatdisagree say that we should think of other things that ____53____ animal
behavior, such as hunger. On the other hand, many people who believe that
animals can predict earthquakes often have ____54____ of very strange animal
behavior right before the ground shakes. To them, this is evidence that animals
can certainly predict earthquakes.
In short, the truth is that we aren’t sure. Animals might be able to sense
earthquakes before they happen, but there is no solid evidence that they can.
However, one thing that most seismologists can agree on is that more research
is needed. Animals may be the ____55____ to predicting earthquakes before
they happen, and could help save many lives.

At five p.m. I stopped at the market to pick up a few necessary things: cream for
coffee, eggs for breakfast and pills for my terrible headache.
Having been rushing all day, I was very ____45____ and did not want to shop

home to put my feet up and watch my husband make dinner. So I gritted my teeth,
took a deep breath and ____46____ the market. That’s when I saw her, a baby sitting
in a shopping cart, who looked around 9 months old, with blond hair and large blue
eyes. We stared at each other. Then I did what I always do with children: I gave her
my best smile. That’s a ____47____ I formed long ago when I became a mother. It
started with my first child, in that unforgettable, life-changing moment when he waslaid upon my chest and I watched him turn his tiny face up to find me.
At times, over the years, my ____48____ would fade into a look of fear or worry
or anger. But it never let my face for long. It always came back, even on occasion
through tears. It happened that same way with my second and third child.
And now, after all these years, I can’t resist smiling at children. I have learned
that all children, young and old, need ____49____ to smile at them. Not just their
parents and grandparents, but their teachers and coaches, family and friends. And, yes,
even strangers at the market in a rush to get home.
The baby and I smiled at each other. That got a smile in return from every

To Wear or Not to Wear
A teacher in the U.K. sent 80 students home because they broke school uniform
rules. The Guardian(《卫报》) held a discussion about ___45___ students
should wear school uniform.
School uniform is very important. It helps me ___46___ my lessons, because it
reminds me that I am at school to learn. School uniform also helps prevent bullying
(欺凌). If everyone wears the same clothes, it is ___47___ to laugh at otherpeople’s clothing. I don’t think this affects the development of a child’s personality.
David Hershman, a student at Stafford Grammar School
Uniform has to be earned. Students should start school with no uniform. As they
___48___ at school, they start wearing it. I always think children need to be proud of
their school. Uniform is important for that. So, make students learn it if they don’t
perform well, they should not be allowed to get one.
Tim Francis, a former teacher
In a perfect world, school uniform would not exist. Children would express their
personalities through their own clothes at school. We don’t live in a perfect world,
however. Learning to fit in is one of the things at school for our children. The best
thing about uniform, for me as a ___49___, is the simplicity(简单).
Joanna Moorhead, a mother of four
I can definitely see the benefits of wearing school uniform. Uniform plays an
important role in helping schools show authority(权威). However, a school should
not rely heavily on uniform to improve students’ behavior. Teaching them how to
___50___ themselves with confidence is more important.
