Last summer, I went to France for a holiday. I was so excited but also a little nervous because my
French was not good.
One hot afternoon, after exploring the city, I felt really tired. I wanted to tell my French friend, Claire,
“I am a little tired.” I carefully said the words I’d learned: “Je suis un pue fatigue.”
But Claire burst out laughing. My face felt hot. What had I done wrong? Claire explained, “In French,
there are words that sound similar but have very different meanings. ‘peu’ means ‘a little,’ but if you
pronounce it differently, it can sound like ‘pue’, which means ‘stinks’ — like something smells bad. So,
instead of saying you needed a rest, it sounded like you were saying you smelled bad and were tired”
This awkward moment was a real eye-opener for me. It made me realize just how daunting
pronunciation can be in a foreign language. Even small differences in pronunciation can completely changethe meaning of what you’re trying to say. The same is true in English, for example, “ship” (a large boat) and
“sheep” (a woolly animal) sound very similar, but they mean totally different things.
Now, I pay extra attention to how words sound and what they mean. And if I mix them up again? I’ll
just laugh along. After all, laughing is part of learning — even if it’s a bit stinky sometimes.
24. Why was the author nervous about his holiday in France?
A. He was poor at French. B. He never went abroad.
C. He had no friends there. D. He was in short of money.
25. What awkward moment did the author meet?
A. He got a wrong person. B. He made a pronunciation mistake.
C. He was tricked by the locals. D. He spelt a word incorrectly.
26. What does the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Easy. B. Natural. C. Difficult. D. Clear.
27. How did the author’s experience in France affect him?
A. He smelled bad and was tired.
B. He hated learning foreign languages.
C. He no longer considered Claire as a friend.
D. He became open to mistakes in language learning.

John “Charlie” Veron-widely known as “the Godfather of Coral Reef (珊瑚礁)”-is a celebrated expert
who has personally discovered nearly a quarter of the world’s coral species and has spent the past 45 years
diving Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. But now the 73-year-old is raising the alarm about its future. The
Great Barrier Reef, one of the natural wonders, is 2, 300 kilometers long and is the only living organism that
can be seen from space. It is considered a World Treasure Site due to its biodiversity (生物多样性)with 30
species of whales, dolphins and sharks. Within the reef itself, there are also a number of tiny organisms and
fishes.
However, its health is threatened. After the recent mass bleaching (白化)events, Veron dived in many
areas of the Great Barrier Reef to see the damage for himself. “I was seeing and feeling it and it was
absolutely shocking, ” he says.
Veron says the mass bleaching events in the past few years-and the possibility of losing one of nature’s
greatest treasures-were a wake-up call for the world in the wider battle against climate change, which,
together with the rising sea temperature, is considered the greatest threats to the reef.
Fortunately, earlier this year, the Australian government announced nearly 400 million dollars in new
funding towards scientific projects designed to help the reef.
There has been criticism in Australia about the slow process for the funding. “It won’t be wasted,
though,”Veron says. “As scientists will be able to create a sort of seed bank to protect the species until the
climate is good enough to rebuild the reef. What the scientists hope to do is to help nature along a bit after
the big carbon dioxide increase is over and it starts to come down.”
28. Why is the Great Barrier Reef considered a treasure site?
A. It is a natural wonder.
B. It can be seen from space.
C. It has a rich variety of species.
D. It is home to a great many fishes.29. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Climate change is threatening biodiversity.
B.The Great Barrier Reef is in danger of extinction.
C.Scientists have found major factors in the reef’s blenching.
D.Veron has made great contributions to environmental protection.
30. What is the text?
A.A news report. B.A travel guide.
C.A research plan. D.A journal entry.
31. What's Veron's attitude to the future of the reef according to the last paragraph?
A.Uncaring. B.Doubtful. C.Uncertain. D.Positive.

Can you imagine digging in your yard one day and finding a life-sized soldier made completely of
clay? That’s what happened several decades ago when farmers in Xi’an,China, were digging wells.
Archaeologists have since found about 6,000 more of these soldiers, along with
horses, weapons, tools, and other artifacts(手工艺品).The huge army was meant to protect the tomb of the
first ruler of China. The first emperor of China,Qin Shihuang, accomplished a huge amount during his
rule.Between 221 and 210 BCE,he started the construction of the Great Wall.He built a large network of
roads.He introduced a new writing system,currency(货币),and a set of measurements.The emperor also
ordered the construction of a huge army of life-sized terracotta soldiers. These,he hoped, would protect his
tomb after his death.
The soldiers in Xi’an’s terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren’t always. They began as
an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple.Sadly, most of the colours did not last to the present
day. After being exposed to air during excavation(挖掘),the coating under the paint began to fall off.The
paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking with it important pieces of history.
Now new techniques are starting to reveal the army’s true colours.Archaeologists have recently
discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted
features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes.Chinese and German researchers have
developed a special liquid to help preserve the soldiers’ colours. After they find a soldier or other
artifacts, archaeologists spray it with the liquid. They then cover it in plastic.Archaeologists are also finding
colours in the dirt around the soldiers. It’s important not to disturb the dirt,so the colours won’t be lost.“We
are treating the earth as an artifact,”says archaeologist Rong Bo,the museum’s leading chemist. The next
challenge, says Rong,is to find a way to apply the colours to the army again.Once that happens, artists can
bring Emperor Qin’s army back to life in full, vivid colour.
32. The terracotta soldiers were constructed to .
A. show the outside world about China’s greatness
B. be enjoyed by everyday people
C. frighten China’s enemies
D. protect Emperor Qin’s tomb
33.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. The soldiers lost their colours very quickly.
B. The soldiers’ paint fell off because of the high temperature.
C. Visitors to the museum are not actually seeing the real soldiers.D. Being exposed to water is bad for the soldiers.
34.What have archaeologists recently discovered?
A. A place with over a hundred soldiers.
B. A written description of the soldiers’ true colours.
C. A special liquid in the tomb to preserve the soldiers’ colours.
D. A new tomb for Emperor Qin.
35.Which statement would Rong Bo probably agree with?
A. The soldiers should stay in their current, brown colour.
B. Artists should be able to paint the soldiers in any colour they want.
C. Archaeologists can only guess at the soldiers’ original colours.
D. We should try to restore the army’s vivid colours.

It was a sunny Friday afternoon, and the school sports field was filled with excitement.
The annual sports meeting was in full swing, and the atmosphere was electric. Students were cheering,
teachers were busy organizing events, and athletes were stretching or practicing their starts. Among them
was Lily, a shy but determined senior high student who was about to take part in the 4×100-meter relay race
as the last runner. She fixed her eyes nervously on the distant finish line.
Lily’s team had practiced for weeks, and they had high hopes of winning. She stood at the starting point,
watching her teammates run towards her. The first runner passed the baton (接力棒) smoothly to the second,
and then the second to the third. As the third runner approached, Lily stretched out her hand, ready to grab
the baton. But just as the baton was about to reach her, a strong wind blew, and she accidentally stepped on a
small stone, losing her balance. She fell to the ground, hurting her knee and dropping the baton. The baton
rolled a few feet away, and she stared at it in horror as time seemed to slow down.
Tears welled up in Lily’s eyes as she saw the other teams’ last runners speeding past her. She felt
ashamed and disappointed, thinking she had let her team down. She sat on the ground, not knowing what to
do. The noise of the crowd seemed to die down, and all she could feel was the pain in her knee and the
weight of her failure.
But then, something unexpected happened. Her teammates rushed over to her, instead of blaming her,
they knelt down and asked if she was okay. The third runner, Anna, put a hand on her shoulder and said
softly, “It’s not over yet, Lily. We’re all here for you.” Other students from the crowd also came over, some
bringing some water to her. A school doctor quickly arrived and dressed her wound.注意:
