项涂黑。
A
In school, there are certain things I think I’m good at: Chemistry, English, Math, etc. But Latin (拉丁语) is not
one of them. For the past few years, I’ve had a tough time learning the subject, while my classmate, whom I’ve
known since I was a kid, was a Latin prodigy (天才), mastering every sentence that was thrown at her. But, I had
one thing over her: I had Chemistry. While she mastered her grammar, I mastered my gases. While she was busy
writing, I was doing experiments.
However, one week we had a Latin test and I was not at all prepared for it. Fearing that I would fail the class,
my parents told me to go to my classmate for help. I went to her house and sat down with her, ready for her to make
fun of me. But what I found was a patient teacher, one who wanted to help me do better and honestly didn’t care at
all about the gap (差距) in our knowledge. After just a period of hard work and studying my confidence had already
increased.
I did better in Latin, and my grade improved, but my friend still faced challenges in Chemistry. Now that I
knew how far a little help could go, I offered to help her with some of the knowledge points that she didn’t
understand. From that point on, our tutoring sessions (辅导课程) became more favorable to both sides. She would
help me with Latin, and I’d help her with Chemistry.
From this I was also able to realize how good tutoring was for the tutors themselves, a job I used to think wasonly good for the person learning. Once I started tutoring her, I started to think about my chemistry work
differently, not just how to solve the problems but why they worked and how to explain the reasoning behind them.
So next time you’re struggling in school with a certain subject, instead of reading the textbook over and over,
looking online or just worrying, ask your classmates how they understand the material.
1. What problem did the author have?
A. She had difficulty in learning Latin.
B. She couldn’t get along with her classmates.
C. She wasn’t interested in learning languages.
D. She failed to balance her time for all subjects.
2. Why did the author go to her classmate?
A. She wanted to instruct her classmate in Chemistry.
B. She wanted to make up with her classmate.
C. She wanted to get away from her parents.
D. She wanted to get help for a coming test.
3. What does the underlined word “favorable” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Normal. B. Boring. C. Advantageous. D. Difficult.
4. How does the author think tutoring influences the tutors?
A. It helps them make more friends.
B. It improves their problem-solving skills.
C. It offers them chances to explore a new job.
D. It encourages them to think deeply about the problems.
【答案】1. A 2. D 3. C 4. D

Many of the forests growing in the eastern US now didn’t exist (存在) two centuries ago. In the late 18th
century, Europeans started clearing the region’s trees for farmland. About a century later, in many forests that had
existed for thousands of years, only 10% of the trees remained. Land clearing finally slowed by the early 1900s,
partly because most forests had been cleared. Then people left farmland for cities, giving trees a chance to regrow.
That, along with purposeful planting, allowed millions of acres of forests to recover during the 20th century.
At the same time, fossil fuel (化石燃料) burning began increasing temperatures around the US, but several
eastern states have stayed relatively cool. There are some opinions about why this area of cooler temperatures,
called a“warming hole”, exists: agricultural irrigation (农业灌溉), for example, can hold down temperatures. Butecologist Novick wanted to know whether the reforestation (重新造林) might have played a role.
Novick’s team measured air temperatures, which could help decide whether there was a cooling benefit.
Because air moves, cooler air can flow out from the forest. The researchers found that by the end of the 20th
century, air temperatures on the hottest days were up to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit cooler in reforested areas. Forests
lower temperatures in a way similar to sweating. When tree leaves give out water vapor, it cools the air in forests.
The researchers say reforestation isn’t totally responsible for the warming hole, but the study shows it could
partially explain it.
The results don’t mean trees should be planted anywhere, however. In northern forests that have snow for
much of the year, for example, adding extra trees can make the temperature higher. Being darker than snow, tree
cover reduces the sunlight sent back into space. Besides, benefits would likely only come with proper reforestation.
Planting forests where none grew before could harm the environment.
While the eastern forests have cooling effects, experts say reforestation can’t solve the climate ( 气候)
problem; only reducing fossil fuel burning can do that. But encouraging reforestation could help some humans and
areas stay cooler.
5. What happened to the forests in the eastern US in history?
A. They started to regrow over two centuries ago.
B. Lots of them were destroyed by the early 1900s.
C. They were completely cut down by the late 1800s.
D. Many of them became farmland before the 18th century.
6. What was the discovery by the researchers?
A. Lower air temperatures in the forests.
B. Continuous flow of air from the forests.
C. Low surface temperatures of the tree leaves.
D. Large amount of water in the air from the forests.
7. Why does the author mention the northern forests?
A. To explain the effect of burning fuels.
B. To show the importance of choosing planting spots.
C. To describe the meaning of real reforestation.
D. To compare the features of different types of forests.
8. What is the best title for the text?
A. Avoid the heat by hiding in forestsB. Regrowing trees helps fight climate change
C. Reforestation keeps the eastern US cooler
D. A warming hole was found in reforested areas
【答案】5. B 6. A 7. B 8. C

There’s an old saying that laughter is the best medicine. A new study from Germany finds that this is true,
especially for the health of medical assistants (助理) (MAs).
MAs play an important role in healthcare, often being the first point of contact for patients, yet they face
various tasks, low job control and relatively low earnings. These factors can lead to stress and burnout, making it
necessary to find ways to help them deal with stressful situations better.
Thus, the researchers surveyed over 600 MAs across Germany. They used a questionnaire (问卷) that rated
eight different humor styles. MAs also answered questions about their job satisfaction, work involvement, self-
efficacy (自我效能) and whether they were in leadership roles. Interestingly, the researchers also did a separate
study (独立研究) on MAs working specifically in general medicine.
They find that different types of humor work better in different situations. And in general medicine, where
doctors often see the same patients over many years, a gentle, satirical (讽刺的) humor that kindly points out
unhealthy behaviors seems to work well. This style helps build stronger relationships with regular patients, making
them more willing to accept health advice. However, the study warns against using satirical remarks too much, as it
can lead to emotional distance from work and reduced drive in the long run.
This study is pioneering because it’s one of the first to use the detailed humor style model in a workplace
setting, especially in healthcare. The researchers suggest that training programs for MAs could teach them to use
friendly humor and stay away from satirical remarks. Over time, this could create a positive cycle: better humor
leads to better well-being, which in turn helps maintain that positive humor style, even during hard times.
“Knowing about the effects of humor and different styles can help make conversations with patients more
pleasant. That said, waiting rooms are not supposed to become comedy (喜剧) clubs. It’s more about using humor
carefully and properly,” concludes Professor René Proyer, a psychologist.
9. What does the study focus on?
A. The role of humor in medical treatment.
B. The effect of humor on MAs’ well-being.
C. The benefit of humor to medical training programs.
D. The impact of humor on medical leadership roles.10. What is the researchers’ purpose in conducting a separate study?
A. To highlight context-specific findings.
B. To make up for the limitations of questionnaires.
C. To compare humor styles across different medical fields.
D. To determine the most popular humor style among MAs.
11. Why is the study significant in the context of healthcare?
A. It provides new insights into patient treatment.
B. It seems the first-ever research conducted in the field.
C. It stresses the importance of humor in medical training.
D. It offers a new way to improve MAs’ working experience.
12. What is René Proyer’s suggestion for humor usage?
A. Turn waiting rooms into comedy clubs.
B. Rely on gentle humor for health advice.
C. Practice using humor thoughtfully.
D. Have humorous conversations with patients.

项。
Good gift giving is an art. The perfect present can lift a mood or improve a relationship. ____13____ So are
there any rules to follow? Read on for 4 must-know tips.
Don’t add a small gift to a big gift.
Want to add a tie to an expensive shirt? Some flowers to go with a bottle of grand wine? Don’t. When we
receive several gifts together, we tend to average out their value. ____14____
Gift experiences rather than things.
A new smartphone becomes old fast. ____15____ Often more thought has gone into experiences and they
create more vivid memories. That is why you should consider an experience over a physical object while gifting.
Gift cards are not bad.
Gift giving can be wasteful. We only spend $10 on ourselves if we find something that we expect is worth
more than $10 to us. But gift is different, because we’ re not buying for ourselves. So we can spend $10 on
something that’s worth less than $10 to the receiver. ____16____ Gift cards have become much more popular overtime. And they’ re also very popular with receivers—a better option than a rushed or poorly chosen gift that goes
straight to the garbage can.
____17____
Let’s put it very simply: buy things that your receiver would buy for themselves. That might seem obvious, but
it happens far less than we’d like. People tend to use gifts to signal something about themselves rather than
providing utility(实用)or happiness to the receiver. The best way to get it right is to simply ask the question
—“What would you like?”
A. Think like the receiver.
B. It could even be worth nothing to them.
C. Use gifts to signal something about yourself.
D. But having the same experience strengthens bonds.
E. Therefore, small gift added to a big one will hurt the big one’s impact.
F. But a dream vacation or seeing your favorite artist will give you memories that last forever.
G. Whatever the situation, gift giving requires careful thought and consideration.

Dear schoolmates,
With World Sleep Day just around the corner, I’m writing to appeal to everyone to recognize the importance of
quality sleep as many students have the habit of staying up late, which does harm to their health in many ways.
To begin with, it can lower your immunity, making you fall ill easily. Additionally, staying up late can lead to
memory loss, poor eyesight, headaches and other health problems. Moreover, tiredness resulting from staying up
can make it difficult to concentrate on your studies.
So let’s say no to staying up late and develop healthier living habits. It’s time to take positive action.
Yours,

Suddenly I felt my face turn red with embarrassment. How could I have never noticed? Every Christmas my
mother enjoyed creating special memories and traditions for her family. Mom loved Christmas- the shopping,
cooking, decorating, music, gifts even the hustle and bustle (拥挤喧器) the season brings. Her enthusiasm
encouraged my brother, sister, and me to experience the joy and wonder of the season. Although we could receive
various gifts, we were taught that the real reason for the season was to celebrate the getting together of the whole
family.
Many years have passed since I was a child. Yet I can still smell the aroma (香味) of Mom’s sugar cookies as
she prepared a special treat for her family. These sweets were a sure sign that Christmas Day was near.
On Christmas Eve my mother laid all our stockings under the beautifully decorated pine tree my father had
picked out and cut down in the forest. Later, in the middle of the night, she secretly filled the stockings. The next
morning we excitedly opened our gifts, leaving our Christmas stockings for last. Our stockings were always full of
tiny toys, trinkets, nuts, oranges, apples, and colorful hard candies in various shapes and sizes
In my twenties, I went Christmas shopping with a friend. She began looking for a small gift to place in hermother’s stocking. “You fix a Christmas stocking for your mother?” I asked. “Yes,” she replied. “Every year I fill a
stocking with little treats and have it waiting for her on Christmas morning. I couldn’t bear for my mother to not
have a Christmas stocking, especially since she prepares one for everyone else.
That’s when I felt my face turn red with embarrassment. I realized my mother had not had a Christmas
stocking for as long as I remembered. And, even worse, no one had noticed her stocking was missing.

【答案】
My sister and I were determined to start a tradition of our own that year. We secretly planned to fill a
Christmas stocking for our mother, just like she did for us every year. We carefully selected small gifts that we
knew she would love, such as a cozy blanket and some handwritten notes expressing our love and gratitude. We
also added some of her favorite snacks, like nuts and dried fruits, to fill the stocking to the brim. The night before
Christmas, we quietly placed the stocking under the tree, waiting to see her reaction in the morning.
