Australia is nearly as large as the United States, but most of it is too dry for
people to live in. Around this dry part are large sheep and cow farms. A few of
them are as large as the smallest state in America. Often the neighbors are several
hundred kilometers away.
The twoway radio is very important to people who live on these great
Australian farms. It works much like a telephone. A person can hear someone
else talk and then give an answer. For example, people on the large farms can
talk to a doctor far away. They can talk to a doctor about someone who is ill, and
the doctor can let them know how to look after the person who is sick.As the large farms are so far from town, the children can not go to school.
Radio schools are started for them in some places. At a certain time each day,
boys and girls turn on their radios and listen to teachers in cities far away.
Families on the large farms want to give news to their neighbors. The
program “Round Robin” by radio has been started to keep families in touch with
(与……有联系) each other. They can talk about who is going away and who is
ill. The men can talk about their sheep and cows and how much money the
markets will pay for them. In many ways the radio becomes a newspaper for the
farm people of Australia.
59. From the first paragraph, we know there are some ________ farms in
Australia.
A. very good B. very large
C. very dry D. very small
60. In the passage above the twoway radio is ________.
A. important to Americans
B. useful for children only

A. ill B. poor C. kind D. healthy
62. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. The twoway radio is like a telephone for Australian farmers.
B. Families on large farms can keep in touch with each other by radio.
C. The twoway radio is like a newspaper for Australian farmers.
D. All the Australians live on dry places, and they use radios in many ways.

In northern Scotland there is a long, deep lake called Loch Ness. More than
200 meters deep, it is the largest lake in the UK. People say a big monster(怪
兽)lives in its dark, cold waters. It weighs more than 1,000 kilos and is at least
ten meters long. Some people say it has a beard like a horse. Others say it lookslike a snake. Many people travel to Loch Ness to look for this strange monster,
but only a few people have seen it. At least, they say they have seen it.
The Loch Ness Monster is a famous legend(传说). The first story about a
monster in Loch Ness was told over 500 years ago, but the legend of the monster
spread widely only in the twentieth century. In 1933, a husband and his wife
reported that they saw a big monster in Loch Ness. Several people have taken
photos, but at least one of them was a hoax(骗局). During the 1960s, a team was
formed to look for the monster. They took many photos and made movies, but
they were never able to find a monster.
There is no real fact that a monster lives in Loch Ness, but there is also no
fact that one doesn't live. One thing is true about Loch Ness: there are a lot of
tourists there.

Have you ever been to Hangzhou? I have been there. Last winter, I went
there with my parents. We visited many places of interest such as West Lake,
the landmark of Hangzhou, and Leifeng Pagoda. We also enjoyed different
kinds of food there. We had a good time. In my opinion, Hangzhou is a

that it's not too cold in winter. If you want to relax, you can go there.
