Chinese Scientists Study How the Brain Decides

Scientists in China have found out how our brain makes quick decisions. Their study came out in the journal Science on October 16.

For a long time, people thought a braincell was very simple, like a small dot. But it is more like a tree with long branches. The scientists watched live mice. They found that these branches help the mice learn new rules. The body of the cell takes in what the mouse sees and hears. Together they help the mouse choose.

The team worked on this study for about ten years. Their finding may help scientists build smarter computers in the future.

China Calls for Peace in the Middle East

On October 15, a Chinese representative spoke at the United Nations. He called on all sides to stop the fighting in the Middle East and to solve problems through dialogue.

He said the biggest problem is Palestine. Many people there need food, water and medicine. He asked Israel to stop its military actions and to let aid go into Gaza. He also said that two states living side by side is the only way to peace.

China says it will keep working for peace in the region. The meeting took place in New York, at the United Nations.

Guangdong Starts a Campaign to Protect Birds

Guangdong has started a campaign to protectbirds. On October 15, the event opened in a village in Foshan. The village is called Egret Paradise. Guangdong is in the south of China, and many birds fly through it every year.

People there have loved and protectedegrets for over a hundred years. Now more than 40,000 egrets live there, together with 47 kinds of birds.

At the event, about 200 people joined a birdprotection team. They set 20 wildbirds free, such as night herons. A new bird post office opened too. A bird photo contest will take entries until December 18.
