27|Passage 27: The X-ray Discovery
In 1895, Wilhelm Röntgen obtained a revolutionary discovery while experimenting with cathode rays. He noticed that a special screen in his laboratory glowed even when covered with black paper. Röntgen realized that an unknown type of radiation could penetrate solid objects. He called these mysterious rays "X-rays" because "X" represented an unknown quantity.
To test his theory, he placed his wife's hand between the ray source and a photographic plate. The resulting image showed her bones clearly, with her wedding ring visible. Röntgen published his findings and demonstrated the technology to medical professionals. Doctors quickly identified the huge potential for diagnosing fractures and diseases without surgery.
Röntgen refused to patent his discovery, believing that scientific knowledge belonged to humanity. He received the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. His work transformed medicine and paved the way for modern imaging technologies like CT scans and MRIs.

28|Passage 28: The Yellow River
The Yellow River, known as the "Mother River" of China, flows for five thousand kilometers across the northern plains. It gets its name from the plenty of yellow sediment it carries from the Loess Plateau. Ancient Chinese civilization developed along its banks, with farmers using its water for irrigation.
However, the river has caused terrible floods throughout history. The sediment accumulates in the riverbed, raising the water level until it bursts its banks. Emperors organized massive projects to build dikes and channels to control the floods. Modern engineers have constructed dams and reservoirs to dominate the water flow.
The Yellow River basin remains significant for agriculture and industry, supplying water to millions of people. Environmental protection has become increasingly vital as pollution threatens the ecosystem. Scientists monitor the water quality and work to restore the river's health. The Yellow River symbolizes both the creative and destructive power of nature.
