Latest TOEFL Speaking Section (2026 Format)
Since January 21, 2026, the TOEFL Speaking section has completely changed. It is now much shorter (about 8 minutes) and contains only two task types:
- Listen and Repeat
(7 sentences) - Take an Interview
(4 questions on the same topic)
You have no preparation time. Answers are scored mainly by AI on fluency, pronunciation, clarity, and content development.
1. Listen and Repeat (Task 1)
You hear 7 sentences one by one (they get longer). After a beep, you must repeat each sentence exactly.
Sample Set (Campus Library context):
The library is open daily. Food and drinks are not allowed. Public computers are found on the second floor. You can reserve a private study room online. Reference books must remain inside the building at all times. If you need help finding a specific title, please ask a librarian. Students are responsible for returning all borrowed materials by the due date.
Tip: Focus on clear pronunciation, natural rhythm, and complete accuracy. Even small missing words lower the score.
2. Take an Interview (Task 2) – Most Important
You answer 4 related questions (45 seconds each). Topics are everyday and personal (technology, habits, opinions, plans, etc.).
话题 1 : 计划
Full Sample Interview: “Making Plans”
Introduction
You have agreed to take part in a research study about planning for the future. A professor will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Think back to the last time you needed to make detailed plans for an important event. What was that event? What was the most challenging part?
High-scoring Sample Answer (~45 seconds):
“I guess the last time I had to make detailed plans was about two years ago when my wife and I were preparing a big trip to the Middle East. We were going to stay almost two months, so I had to choose the cities, book hotels, and even research restaurants. The most challenging part was finalizing the itinerary because there were so many options and it was hard to find reliable, up-to-date information about safety and attractions. In the end it worked out, but it was quite stressful.”
Question 2
Some people like to make detailed plans every day. Others prefer to live more spontaneously. Which kind of person are you?
Sample Answer:
“I prefer to live life in a more spontaneous way. Since I’m self-employed, I don’t start my day with a fixed schedule. I just look at the possible tasks and choose whatever feels best at the moment. This keeps me more motivated and productive than following a rigid plan. It also gives me the freedom to enjoy personal interests whenever I feel like it.”
Question 3
What’s your method for remembering important dates and deadlines? Why do you like this method?
Sample Answer:
“I’ve tried journals, wall calendars, and sticky notes, but the method that works best for me now is a calendar app on my phone. Whenever I hear about an important date, I immediately add it. The app sends me a notification 24 hours before and another one hour before the deadline. I can also quickly browse upcoming weeks. It’s much more reliable than any paper method I’ve used before.”
Question 4
Can you think of a time when something didn’t go according to plan? How did that experience make you feel?
Sample Answer:
“When I was in university, I had planned to graduate early in three and a half years. I took extra courses and even studied during the summer. However, when I tried to apply for graduation, I discovered I was missing one required credit. I had to stay an extra half semester. I felt very frustrated at the time, but I learned that even the most careful plans can go wrong.”
Quick Tips for High Scores (Band 5–6)
Answer immediately and speak for most of the 45 seconds. Use a clear structure: direct answer → reason → specific example → short conclusion. Speak naturally (not too fast or slow). Use personal examples — they sound more authentic and score higher.
话题 2: 智能手机
Here’s a complete, realistic TOEFL 2026 “Take an Interview” set
Topic: Smartphones
Introduction (you will hear this)
You have agreed to take part in a research study about smartphone usage. You will have a short online interview with a researcher. The researcher will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Thank you for speaking with me today. Please think back to the last time you used your phone for something really important — for example contacting someone, finding your way, making a payment, or translating. Why did you use it then? What did you like about how it worked?
High-scoring Sample Answer (≈45 seconds)
A few weeks ago I was traveling alone in a new city and got completely lost after getting off the wrong bus. I opened the map app on my phone, and within seconds it showed me exactly where I was and how to walk to my hotel. What I really liked was how accurate and fast it was — even though the street names were in another language, the app gave me clear turn-by-turn directions with voice guidance. It honestly saved me a lot of stress and time.
Question 2
Everyone feels differently about smartphones. Some people feel phones make them more connected and efficient, while others feel distracted or overwhelmed. How do you usually react to your phone in daily life?
High-scoring Sample Answer
For me, smartphones are mostly positive, but I have to be careful. I feel more connected and efficient because I can quickly check emails, messages, or public transport schedules. However, I sometimes feel overwhelmed when I get too many notifications. That’s why I turn off most non-essential alerts and keep my phone on silent for long periods during the day. Overall, I react positively as long as I control how much I use it.
Question 3
Some people believe that smartphones have improved the quality of face-to-face conversations, while others think they have made real conversations worse. What is your opinion? Why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I think smartphones have generally made face-to-face conversations worse. The main reason is that people often check their phones even when they’re sitting with friends or family. I’ve noticed that dinners or meetings are frequently interrupted by someone looking at a message. Of course phones can help share photos or information quickly, but most of the time they reduce eye contact and deep listening. So overall, I believe the negative effect on real conversations is stronger than the positive one.
Question 4
Looking ahead, do you think people will rely more or less on smartphones in the next ten years? Why do you think so?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I believe people will rely even more on smartphones in the next ten years. Technology is becoming more integrated into daily life — payments, health monitoring, work, and even education are moving onto phones. At the same time, phones are getting smarter with better AI assistants. Although some people try to reduce screen time, the convenience is just too strong. So I expect our dependence on smartphones will continue to increase rather than decrease.
Practice Tips for this set
Speak for 40–45 seconds each time. Start with a clear direct answer. Give one specific personal example. End with a short concluding sentence.

Here’s the next complete TOEFL 2026 “Take an Interview” set
Topic: Travel
Introduction
You have agreed to take part in a research study about travel experiences and preferences. You will have a short online interview with a researcher. The researcher will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Thank you for joining. First, could you tell me about a recent trip you took — it can be a short trip or a longer vacation. Where did you go, and what was the most memorable part of that trip?
High-scoring Sample Answer (≈45 seconds)
Last summer I went on a five-day trip to a coastal city with two of my friends. We stayed in a small hotel near the beach. The most memorable part was the second day, when we rented bicycles and rode along the coastline. The weather was perfect, the sea was bright blue, and we stopped at a small local restaurant for fresh seafood. It felt completely relaxing and different from my usual busy routine. I still think about that day often.
Question 2
Some people prefer to plan every detail of their trips in advance, while others like to travel more spontaneously with little planning. Which style do you prefer, and why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I prefer a mix, but I lean toward planning the important things in advance. I usually book my flights and hotel early so I don’t have to worry about them. However, I like to keep my daily schedule flexible. That way I can decide on the spot whether I want to visit a museum, walk around a neighborhood, or just relax at a café. Complete spontaneity makes me a bit anxious, but too much planning can feel stressful, so a balance works best for me.
Question 3
Many people say that traveling is one of the best ways to learn about the world and other cultures. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I strongly agree that traveling is one of the best ways to learn about the world. When you visit a new place, you experience the culture directly — the food, the way people communicate, and daily life — instead of just reading about it. For example, when I visited another country last year, I learned much more about local customs by talking to people and observing them than I ever could from books or videos. Traveling also challenges your assumptions and makes you more open-minded. So yes, I believe it is an excellent way to learn.
Question 4
Looking ahead, do you think people will travel more or less in the next ten years compared to now? Why do you think so?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I think people will travel more in the next ten years. Technology is making travel easier and often cheaper, with better flight options and online booking tools. Also, more people, especially younger generations, see travel as an important part of life rather than a luxury. Although environmental concerns and rising costs might limit some trips, the overall desire to explore new places is very strong. So I expect international and domestic travel will continue to increase.
话题 5 教育:
Here’s a complete TOEFL 2026 “Take an Interview” set
Topic: Education
Introduction
You have agreed to take part in a research study about education and learning experiences. You will have a short online interview with a researcher. The researcher will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Thank you for participating. First, could you tell me about a recent learning experience you had — it could be a class, an online course, or something you taught yourself. What did you learn, and how did you feel about it?
High-scoring Sample Answer (≈45 seconds)
A few months ago I took an online course about digital marketing. I spent about six weeks watching lectures, doing small projects, and participating in discussion forums. I learned practical skills like how to create simple advertisements and analyze basic data. At first it felt a bit overwhelming because I had no background in the subject, but by the end I felt quite proud of myself. It gave me more confidence and some useful knowledge I can actually apply.
Question 2
Some students prefer learning in a traditional classroom with a teacher and classmates, while others prefer studying online by themselves. Which way of learning do you prefer, and why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I prefer a mix, but if I have to choose, I like learning online more. Online learning gives me more flexibility — I can study at my own pace and review materials as many times as I need. I also find it easier to concentrate at home without classroom distractions. Of course, face-to-face classes are better for discussion and asking questions immediately, but overall the convenience of online learning works better for my schedule and learning style.
Question 3
Many people believe that a university education is the best path to a successful career, while others think practical skills and work experience are more important. What is your opinion? Why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I think both are important, but practical skills and experience are becoming more valuable. A university degree can open doors and give you a strong foundation of knowledge. However, many employers nowadays care more about what you can actually do. For example, someone with real project experience or strong technical skills often has an advantage over a graduate who only has theoretical knowledge. So while education is useful, I believe practical ability is the key factor for long-term career success.
Question 4
Looking to the future, do you think education will become more online or will traditional classroom learning remain important? Why do you think so?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I believe education will become more online in the future, but traditional classrooms will not disappear completely. Online learning is cheaper, more flexible, and can reach people anywhere in the world. Technology like video lessons and interactive platforms is also improving quickly. However, some subjects and skills still need face-to-face interaction, especially for younger students or hands-on training. So overall, I expect a hybrid model will become the most common, with online learning playing a larger role than it does today.

Here’s a complete TOEFL 2026 “Take an Interview” set
Topic: Food & Eating Habits
Introduction
You have agreed to take part in a research study about food and eating habits. You will have a short online interview with a researcher. The researcher will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Thank you for joining the study. First, could you tell me about a recent meal you really enjoyed? What did you eat, and why did you like it so much?
High-scoring Sample Answer (≈45 seconds)
Last weekend I had dinner at a small local restaurant with my family. I ordered grilled fish with vegetables and a bowl of rice. What I really enjoyed was how fresh everything tasted — the fish was cooked perfectly and the vegetables were full of flavor. The atmosphere was also relaxed and comfortable. It felt much better than eating fast food or something I cooked quickly at home. That meal made me feel satisfied and happy.
Question 2
Some people prefer to cook meals at home, while others like to eat out or order delivery. Which do you prefer, and why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I prefer cooking at home most of the time. When I cook myself, I can control the ingredients and make healthier choices. It’s also cheaper than eating out regularly. I enjoy trying new recipes and experimenting with different flavors. Of course, sometimes it’s nice to eat at a restaurant for a special occasion or when I’m too tired to cook, but for daily meals, cooking at home feels better for both my health and my budget.
Question 3
Many people say that modern busy lifestyles have made eating habits worse. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I agree that modern busy lifestyles have generally made eating habits worse. A lot of people don’t have enough time to cook proper meals, so they choose fast food or instant meals that are high in salt, sugar, and oil. I’ve noticed that many of my friends often skip breakfast or eat late at night because of work or study. Although healthy options are available, convenience often wins. So yes, I believe the fast pace of modern life has had a negative effect on the way most people eat.
Question 4
Looking to the future, do you think people will eat more healthily or less healthily than they do now? Why do you think so?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I think people will gradually eat more healthily in the future. There is growing awareness about the connection between food and health problems like obesity and heart disease. More people are interested in organic food, plant-based diets, and cooking at home. Technology also helps — there are many apps that give nutrition information and healthy recipes. Although fast food will still exist, I believe the overall trend will move toward healthier eating habits.

Here’s a complete TOEFL 2026 “Take an Interview” set
Topic: Sports
Introduction
You have agreed to take part in a research study about sports and physical activities. You will have a short online interview with a researcher. The researcher will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Thank you for participating. First, could you tell me about a recent time when you played a sport or did some physical activity? What did you do, and how did you feel afterward?
High-scoring Sample Answer (≈45 seconds)
Last Saturday I played badminton with two of my friends at a local sports center. We played for about an hour and a half. It was quite intense because we were all competitive. After we finished, I felt really refreshed and full of energy. Even though I was a bit tired, my mood was much better than before. It helped me forget about the stress from studying and work during the week.
Question 2
Some people prefer team sports like basketball or soccer, while others prefer individual sports like running or swimming. Which type do you prefer, and why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I prefer individual sports more than team sports. When I do activities like running or swimming, I can go at my own pace and focus completely on improving myself. I also find it more flexible because I don’t need to coordinate with other people’s schedules. Team sports can be fun and social, but sometimes they feel stressful if the team isn’t working well together. So for regular exercise, individual sports suit me better.
Question 3
Many people believe that playing sports is important for both physical and mental health. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I strongly agree that playing sports is important for both physical and mental health. Physically, it helps people stay fit, build strength, and reduce the risk of many diseases. Mentally, sports are a great way to release stress and improve mood. From my own experience, whenever I exercise regularly, I sleep better and feel more confident. Even a short activity can make a big difference. So I believe sports play a valuable role in overall well-being.
Question 4
Looking to the future, do you think people will play sports more or less than they do now? Why do you think so?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I think people will play sports more in the future. There is increasing awareness about the importance of health and fitness. More public sports facilities and community programs are being developed, and technology like fitness apps makes it easier to stay motivated. Although busy lifestyles are still a challenge, more people, especially younger generations, are treating sports as a normal part of life rather than just a hobby. So overall, I expect participation in sports will continue to grow.
话题 8 音乐:
Here’s a complete TOEFL 2026 “Take an Interview” set
Topic: Music
Introduction
You have agreed to take part in a research study about music and listening habits. You will have a short online interview with a researcher. The researcher will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Thank you for joining. First, could you tell me about a recent time when you listened to music? What kind of music was it, and how did it make you feel?
High-scoring Sample Answer (≈45 seconds)
Yesterday evening after finishing my work, I put on some soft piano music while I was cooking dinner. I chose a playlist of calm instrumental pieces. It immediately made me feel more relaxed and peaceful. The busy thoughts from the day slowly disappeared, and I actually enjoyed the process of cooking much more. Music like that really helps me reset my mind after a long day.
Question 2
Some people prefer listening to music alone, while others enjoy listening with friends or at live concerts. Which way do you prefer, and why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I prefer listening to music alone most of the time. When I’m by myself, I can fully focus on the song and the emotions it creates without any distraction. I also like choosing exactly what I want to hear according to my mood. Listening with friends or going to concerts can be fun and energetic, especially for special occasions, but for everyday listening, being alone feels more personal and meaningful to me.
Question 3
Many people say that music is important for mental health and emotional well-being. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I completely agree that music is important for mental health and emotional well-being. Music has a powerful ability to change our mood. When I feel stressed or sad, listening to certain songs can calm me down or give me energy. It also helps people express feelings that are sometimes hard to put into words. From my own experience, music has often helped me through difficult periods, so I believe it plays a valuable role in supporting emotional health.
Question 4
Looking to the future, do you think people will listen to music more or less than they do now? Why do you think so?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I think people will continue to listen to music a lot, and probably even more than now. Music is becoming easier to access through streaming apps and smart devices. People can listen anywhere — while commuting, working, or exercising. New technology also makes it possible to discover music that matches personal taste very accurately. Although some people try to reduce screen time, music itself is not usually seen as a distraction, so I expect listening will remain very popular or even increase.
话题 9: 友谊
Here’s a complete TOEFL 2026 “Take an Interview” set
Topic: Friendship
Introduction
You have agreed to take part in a research study about friendship and social relationships. You will have a short online interview with a researcher. The researcher will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Thank you for participating. First, could you tell me about a recent time you spent with a friend? What did you do together, and how did you feel about it?
High-scoring Sample Answer (≈45 seconds)
Last weekend I met one of my closest friends for lunch and a long walk in the park. We hadn’t seen each other for almost a month because both of us were busy. We talked about our recent experiences, work, and some funny stories from the past. I felt really happy and relaxed afterward. Spending that time together reminded me how important it is to stay connected, even when life gets hectic.
Question 2
Some people prefer to have a few close friends, while others like to have a large group of friends. Which do you prefer, and why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I prefer to have a few close friends rather than a large group. With close friends, the relationship feels deeper and more meaningful. I can share personal thoughts and trust them completely. Maintaining a big group of friends takes a lot of time and energy, and the connections are often more superficial. For me, quality is much more important than quantity when it comes to friendship.
Question 3
Many people believe that friendships are becoming weaker in modern society because of technology and busy lifestyles. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I partly agree with this idea. Technology and busy schedules do make it harder to maintain deep friendships. People often chat online instead of meeting face-to-face, and many are too occupied with work or studies. However, technology can also help us stay in touch with friends who live far away. So while some friendships may become weaker, I don’t think the situation is completely negative — it depends on how people choose to use their time and technology.
Question 4
Looking to the future, do you think friendships will become more important or less important in people’s lives? Why do you think so?
High-scoring Sample Answer
I believe friendships will become more important in the future. Life is becoming more stressful and fast-paced, so people will need strong emotional support from close friends. Although technology allows us to connect with many people, real friendships that provide understanding and care cannot be replaced. More people are also starting to realize the value of mental health, and good friends play a big role in that. So overall, I expect friendships will remain essential or even grow in importance.
