An old book,
a new friend
For some, going to a new school can
be both exciting and difficult. At first,
Chen Zihao always felt lonely at the new
school. He usually kept his head down on
the way to school.
Every morning Mrs Qin reads stories
to the class. One day Chen Zihao was
surprised when Mrs Qin read a story
about Sanmao, a boy from the comic
book series Wanderings of Sanmao.
Chen Zihao knows a lot about
Sanmao’s stories, because his father gave
him the comic books to celebrate his life
at the new school. That night he decided
to share the books with his classmates.
The next day Chen Zihao showed his
books to the class.
“These are comic book series about
Sanmao. See, this one is about Sanmao
making new friends, and that one is about
Sanmao helping the elderly,” he said
excitedly.
“Can I borrow the books from you?
Why don’t we meet after school?” Jiayi,
one of Chen Zihao’s classmates asked.
“You can share everything we want to
know, Zihao.”
Zihao? Jiayi just called him Zihao?
Like they were long-time friends? Chen
Zihao held his books and smiled.
Now he really has friends.

Yu Boya in ancient China played
the qin (a musical instrument) very
well. One day, while he was playing the
qin in a forest, a woodcutter named
Zhong Ziqi heard and understood the
climbing mountains and the running
water expressed in Boya’s music. The two
became close friends. When Ziqi died,
Boya was very sad. He threw his qin away
and never played again. The Chinese
phrase “high mountain and running
water” was later used to describe deep
friendship between close friends.

A sports day
We have Sports Day every year, and this year it was on the third
Friday of October. The whole school was full of fun and excitement
with flags and colourful flowers here and there. Many boys and girls
took part in the event. They ran, jumped, and played football and
basketball.
I joined in a 100m race and won a silver cup. It was not a bad
performance. The 4×100m relay was very exciting. Everyone cheered
for the racers, and the sports field was full of laughter. My best friend
Mike is very good at long-distance
running. He came in first and finally
won the race. In the long jump, my
other friend, Rita, did not get a prize,
but she tried her best. On the sports
day, everyone felt excited.
The sports day ended with a
song. We and Ms Lin, our
teacher, sang together for the
good performance of the boys
and girls in our class. What an
unforgettable day!
