Ghanaian photojournalist Paul Ninson arrived in New York five years ago with a passion for visual
storytelling. To his surprise, the city’s libraries and museums held more photographs documenting Africa’s
past and present than he had ever seen in Ghana. “How could our history be better kept here than at home?”
he wondered. This realization became the start of his life’s work: to build a library in Ghana where Africans
could reclaim their stories through photography.
Growing up, Ninson loved family stories told by his grandparents, but photography was seen as an
unwise career choice in Ghana. However, he sold his iPhone to buy a camera and taught himself the skill.
His early projects, like recording a Kenyan community started by women escaping violence, strengthened
his belief that Africans must own their visual history.
In 2019, Ninson joined a photography school in New York. There, he eagerly read hundreds of
photobooks — a clear difference from Ghana, where such books were rare. When museums refused to share
their records, Ninson promised to build his own library. He searched secondhand stores, asked publishers for
help, and filled storage units with over 30,000 books, even using up all his credit card limits. His friend
Brandon Stanton’s $1.2 million online fundraiser made the dream possible. With the funds, Ninson shipped
the books to Ghana and established the library.
On a December morning in 2022, the Dikan Center — “take the lead” in Ghana’s Akan language —
opened in Accra, near the Gulf of Guinea’s historic coast. The library’s two collections celebrate African
views: one focuses on Africa and Africans living abroad, the other displays works by photographers
worldwide. Among its treasures is Ninson’s first New York purchase: The Gold Coast Yesterday and Today,
a 1940s photobook documenting Ghana’s history before it gained independence in 1957. “It reminds us
where we’ve been and where we’re going,” he says.
24. What inspired Ninson to create African’s own visual history?
A.Finding photobooks in secondhand stores.
B.Studying at a New York photography school.
C.Developing his family storytelling traditions.
D.Finding more African records overseas than locally.
25. Why is The Gold Coast Yesterday and Today important?
第 3 页/ 共8页A.It contains stories from his grandparents.

D.It was Ninson’s first photobook purchase in New York.
26. What best describes Paul Ninson’s character as highlighted in the text?
A.Ambitious and humorous. B.Creative and sympathetic.
C.Conventional and home-centered. D.Committed and forward-thinking.
27. What does Ninson’s story mainly inspire us to do?
A.Value teamwork in cultural projects.
B.Use technology to document history.

At a crop breeding (培育) center in Shanghai, researchers have successfully harvested rice that was
grown from seeds initially bred on China’s space station, Tiangong. The rice plants have completed a full
growth cycle on Earth, maturing after more than 100 days since planting.
This space-to-ground experiment began with 6 rice seeds sent into orbit in 2022 on the Wentian
spacecraft. Taikonauts onboard Tiangong bred these seeds into 59, which they returned to Earth. Researchers
then selected high-quality seeds, growing them under controlled climate conditions and producing around
10,000 new seeds.
Zheng Huiqiong, a lead researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Center, shared that the team’s
findings suggest space-bred seeds can reproduce effectively on Earth, suggesting potential for future space
agriculture. Zheng highlighted that the space-bred rice possesses unique traits, such as a higher sugar
content, with sugar levels estimated to be five to six times higher than standard rice. The space-bred rice also
showed a slight increase in protein content. “That means space-bred rice tastes sweeter and has more
energy,” she added.
Space breeding, the method used in this experiment, exposes seeds to space radiation and microgravity,
generating gene mutations (基因突变). These mutations are carefully assessed upon the seeds’ return to
Earth, sometimes resulting in advantageous traits like shorter growth times, improved disease resistance, and
higher output. Zhao Hui, an expert in China Academy of Space Technology, emphasized the safety of space-
bred food, explaining that unlike genetically modified crops, space-bred seeds naturally mutate without
introducing foreign genes. However, the space-bred rice has fewer leaves, which complicates close planting.
Researchers are planning further studies to understand these leaf traits and explore possible genetic changes.
The Tiangong rice experiment marked a milestone for crop science, as it was the first time that rice had
completed a full life cycle — from seed germination (发芽) to reproduction — in orbit.
28. What can we know about the space-to-ground experiment?
A.Seeds grown in orbit promise higher crop quality.
B.Seeds bred in space were further grown successfully on Earth.
C.New species of seeds grown in space have achieved great success.
D.Climate conditions were controlled when seeds were sent into orbit.
29. What does the underlined words “traits” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Materials. B.Arrangements. C.Disadvantages. D.Characteristics.
30. What does Zhao Hui stress about the space-bred rice?
A.Its security. B.Its artificial process.
C.Its nutrition. D.Its major shortcoming.
31. Which of the following is the best title?
第 4 页/ 共8页A.Organic Farming: High-quality Planting in Space
B.Space Exploration: A Journey to the Space and Beyond
C.New Planting Approach: Replacing the Traditional Farming
D.Space-to-ground Cycle: Promising Future Space Agriculture

We all know that significant changes occur in our bodies during adolescence, but have you ever
stopped to wonder what’s going on inside our brains during this time?
To paint a clearer picture, we should first familiarize ourselves with the different parts of the brain.
Our brain is composed of around 100 billion neurons, which are nerve cells with branch-like structures for
sending and receiving electrical signals. Every time we do or think anything, a signal is sent out. It travels
down a lengthy structure called the axon and, at the end, passes across tiny gaps called synapses to another
neuron, which receives the signal. In this way, messages are sent across our neural network.
Our brain structure changes dramatically as we grow up. Newborn babies have almost all their neurons
but few connections between them, which is why they can’t do very much. After a few months, however, the
number of connections explodes, which in turn helps babies master a wide range of new skills such as
walking and talking. Despite earlier myths that most brain development is completed in the first few years,
we now know that our brains continue to develop throughout our lives and perhaps the most dramatic time
of change and development is during adolescence.
During this period of reorganization, the brain witnesses a sudden increase in neurons similar to a
plant growing uncontrollably in spring. Just as we trim (修剪) a plant to make it stronger and healthier, we
trim our brains. The connections that are used become stronger, whereas those that aren’t used wither (凋谢)
and die. So, the more frequently an action or a thought is activated, the stronger the connections become
between the neurons, which in turn strengthens the part of the brain being used. This explains why the more
you do something, the better you become at it, reinforcing the old proverb “_________”.
It seems that the teenage brain provides the best conditions for perfecting skills such as playing a
musical instrument, or learning to speak another language. It could therefore be argued that teenagers
determine the development of their own brains through the activities and experiences they engage in.
32.What is the main function of neurons in the brain?
A.Store messages. B.Transmit signals.
C.Picture neural structures. D.Control thinking models.
33.Why does the author compare the brain’s development to a plant growing?
A.To show the brain grows fast in spring. B.To explain the rapid increase in neurons.
C.To emphasize the importance of nutrition. D.To highlight the necessity for maintenance.
34.Which proverb best fits the blank in Paragraph 4?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Learning is the eye of the mind.
C.Power is from knowledge. D.Actions speak louder than words.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Lifelong Development of the Brain B.Neurons: Crossroads of Signal Exchange
C.The Adolescent Brain: A Time of Change D.How Learning Helps Shape Our Thoughts
第二节(共 5 小题; 每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever watched a group of fireflies (萤火虫) lighting up the night sky? At first glance, their
lights may appear chaotic, but if you watch closely, you’ll find something remarkable begins to unfold.
36 . They seem to be shining randomly at first. When they gather in a group, these individual
patterns start to synchronize (同步). It’s like they are having a silent conversation, adjusting their flashes to
第 5 页/ 共8页match those around them. Once this synchronization is achieved, the result is a beautiful and coordinated
display of light. 37 , which has inspired people to think about teamwork and creativity.
Douglas, in her book The Firefly Effect, finds similarities between this natural phenomenon and human
teams. She suggests that just like fireflies, team members each bring their own unique talents and ideas to
the group. 3 8 . These individual contributions can synchronize to create something much greater than
the sum of their parts. The key is to encourage each team member to shine, just like a firefly, and to be open
to the ideas and flashes of insight from others.
For example, in a school project team, one student is great at research, another at writing, and a third at
presenting. If they each work in isolation, the project might be good, but not great. However, if they share
their findings, collaborate on the writing, and practice the presentation together, their individual strengths
can combine to create an outstanding project. 39 .
So, when you see fireflies lighting up the night, remember that they are not just insects flashing
randomly. They are a symbol of how individual efforts can come together to create something truly
magical. 40 , whether in school, sports, or the workplace. By embracing the firefly effect, we can build
teams that are not only creative but also highly effective.
A.This is known as the “firefly effect”
B.Their flashes can be seen from miles away
C.It is a lesson that can be applied to any team
D.This is the power of the firefly effect in action
E.They work together and communicate effectively
F.Fireflies use their flashes to communicate in nature
G.They rarely appear in groups and prefer to stay alone

I hurried into Lehman’s grocery store. I was there to buy my grandmother’s hearing aid batteries. More
importantly, this was my chance to visit the love of my life — Artie.
第 7 页/ 共8页I ran to the shelf he was on, and there he was, right where I last saw him: a grey little guy with a large
mouth that fit perfectly over my shoulder as I hugged him tightly. I adored that stuffed dolphin. As I held
Artie, Mrs. Lehman, who had always been kind to me, passed by and smiled knowingly, “Hugging that
dolphin again, huh?”
But my brother, Rick, noticed I took a long time in Lehman’s, saying, “You are a thirteen-year-old girl
now. You are supposed to be quicker. Next time, I will go with you.”Oh, great! My brother, Rick. He always
laughed at me.
But I wouldn’t give up. So, as we walked into the store, I suggested to Rick that he get the batteries,
since he was older. Then I headed towards Artie. There he was, waiting me. I grabbed him and hugged him
tightly. Just then, I heard Rick saying, “What in the world are you doing?”
“This is Artie,” I said. “I hug him every single time I come here. I can’t afford it so I hope he doesn’t
get sold because I just love this little guy.” The look on Rick’s face was unreadable, but I knew deep down
that he wasn’t going to make fun of me. In fact, a few times when he accompanied me to Lehman’s, he said,
“go on and hug your dolphin, if it’s still there.”
One day, Rick was not home, so I went to Lehman’s alone. I went straight to Artie’s shelf. But he was
gone. I searched every shelf but couldn’t find him. Suddenly, a voice from the counter interrupted my
search.
