Kenyasgrowinghumanpopulationhasledtoconflictsbetweenfarmersandelephants.Toaddressthis,the
KenyaWildlifeServicehasworkedwithSTEtoprotectbothwildlifeandfarmers.Onesolutionistheuseof
beehivefences,whichwereintroducedin2007.Thesefenceshavebeehivesplacedbetweenposts,usingbeesto
createanaturalbarrier.Elephants,afraidofbeestings,avoidtheseareas,whilefarmersbenefitfromhoney
production.
Thestudytracked26farmsprotectedbybeehivefencesintwovillagesnearTsavoEastNationalPark,and
studiednearly4,000reportsofelephantapproaches.Elephantsroamfreelyinandoutoftheparkthroughoutthe
yearastheylookformates,foodandwater,butcanbeattractedbythesmellandrichnessofagriculturalcrops.
Duringthecropgrowingseasons,3,027elephantsapproachedthefarmsandthebeehivefencessuccessfully
deterred((cid:128)(cid:129))anannualaverageof86.3%ofelephantsfromdamagingcrops.Acrossallseasonsandtheentire
studyperiod,includingadrought,thefencesdeterredanannualaverageof76%ofelephants.
