B From cottages surrounded by impressive gardens to days spent exploring sandy beaches and deep woods filled with wildlife, in My Family and Other Animals, English writer Gerald Durrell provided a vivid account of his family’s time on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s. Come for the arresting descriptions of Corfu landscapes and stay for Durrell’s laugh-out-loud tales of his unusual family. This book, Durrell wrote humorously in the introduction, “was intended to be a nostalgic(怀旧 的)account of natural history, but in the first few pages, I made the mistake of introducing my family.” Durrell, later known for his zoo keeping and the preservation of wildlife, was just a child during his family’s five-year stay in Corfu. He is 10-year-old Gerry in the book—curious, passionate about animals and a detailed storyteller of his strange family: his imaginative elder brother Larry with his literary ambitions, lovestruck sister Margo, sporty brother Leslie and his ever-calm, loving mother. Durrell’s attention to detail is what makes the book so winning, with every sight, sound and smell of the island brought to life. One minute you’ll be laughing as Larry’s clever literary friends walk down to the daffodil-yellow cottage, the next you’ll be catching your breath as Durrell describes swimming at night in the Ionian Sea: “Lying on my back in the silky water, staring at the sky, only moving my hands and feet slightly, I was looking at the Milky Way stretching like a silk scarf across the sky and wondering how many stars it contained.” My Family and Other Animals is quite difficult to classify, being one part travel, one part autobiography, one part natural history, and one part comedy, with a thread of descriptive language running throughout that sometimes raises it nearly to poetry. , As a real delight to read it’s the perfect literary escapism for any adult or older teenager who is currently walking down a tough road in life. 4. Which word best describes Durrell’s life in Corfu? A. Diverse. B. Busy. C. Risky. D. Tough.5. What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 2? A. I just introduced my family by mistake. B. I shouldn’t have introduced my family. C. I gave false information about my family. D. I couldn’t help introducing my family. 6. What are paragraph 4 and 5 mainly about? A. Durrell’s rich imagination. B. Some interesting plots of the book. . C The book’s writing feature. D. Some vivid descriptions of the island. 7. What is the purpose of this text? A. To share an experience. B. To introduce a writing style. C. To recommend a book. D. To describe an unusual place. C When put to tests, bees have long proved that they’ve got a lot more to offer than pollinating (授粉), making honey and being loyal to a queen. The hard-working insects can change their behavior when things seem difficult, and now some scientists find there is proof that they also like to play. Scientists from Queen Mary University of London performed an experiment, in which they set up a container that allowed bees to travel from their nest to a feeding area. But along the way, the bees could choose to pass through a separate section with some small wooden balls. Over 18 days, the scientists watched as the bees “went out of their way to roll wooden balls repeatedly, despite no apparent incentive (刺激) to do so.” Earlier studies have shown that the black and yellow bugs are willing to learn new tricks in exchange for food or other rewards. In this case, to get rid of external factors, scientists made sure the bees had adapted to their new home and that their environment was stress-free. The finding suggests that like humans, insects also interact with objects as a form of play. Also similar to people, younger bees seem to be more playful than adult bees. “This research provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more complicated than we imagine. There are lots of animals who play just for the purpose of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals and birds,” said Lars Chittka, a professor of sensory and behavioral ecology at Queen Mary University of London, who led the study. The study’s first author. Samadi Galpay, who is a PhD student at Queen Mary University of London, states that it is more evident that bees may be capable of experiencing feelings. “They may actually experience some kind of positive emotional states, even if basic, like other larger animals do. This finding has effects on our understanding of the sense and welfare of insects, which, consequently, encourages us to respect and protect wildlife on Earth ever more,” she says. 8. What is the new finding about bees? A. They are fond of having fun. B. They are faithful to the queen.C. They are adaptable to changes D. They are skilled at rolling balls. 9. How did scientists remove external influences in the experiment? A. By teaching bees new tricks. B. By rewarding bees with food. C. By making bees feel at home. D. By building new homes for bees 10. What are Lars Chittka’s words mainly about? A. The forms of bees’ interaction. B. The complexity of bees’ minds. C. The examples of mammals’ play. D. The purpose of mammals’ enjoyment. 11. What does Samadi Galpay say about the study result? A. It backs up prior understanding of insects. B. It reveals reasons for bees’ positive feelings. C. It drives research on animals’ emotional state. D. It contributes to wildlife conservation on Earth. D “You’re so smart!” This encouraging response to children’s math performance is commonly heard. Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math motivation and achievement over time. Parents who make comments linking their children’s performance to personal characteristics like intelligence are using what’s referred to as person responses. In contrast, parents who link their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses. For the study, researchers asked more than 500 parents to report on how they responded to their children’s math performance and their math beliefs and goals. Children were assessed in two waves across a year to measure their math motivation and achievement. The results show that parents who view math ability as changeable are more likely to give process responses focused on their children’s strategy use and efforts. rather than their intelligence or other personal characteristics. In contrast, parents who believe math ability is unchangeable and that math failure can’t be constructive give more person responses. Parents with high expectations for their children give a combination of both responses. While responses highlighting strategy and efforts are not related to any achievement outcomes, children who receive more responses about their personal characteristics — in particular, related to failure —are more likely to avoid harder math problems. exhibit higher levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests. Because person responses predict poor math adjustment in children over time, researcher suggest parents limit this type of responses at home. Another recommendation for parents is to think about their own beliefs and goals for their kids and examine how these might lead them to. respond in person or process ways. Simply telling parentsto avoid talking about math ability may not be enough. Focusing less on how children perform and more on their strategy and enjoyment of math might be a more effective way to strengthen motivation. 12. Which of the following is an example of process response? A. You are a lucky dog. B. Running is in your blood. C. What works well for your study? D. Why are you such a math genius? 13. What can be inferred from the study results? A. Parents prefer to give more process responses. B. Children are more likely to be affected by math anxiety. C. Process responses help with children’s math achievement. D. Person responses can discourage children from learning math. 14. What do researchers advise parents to do? A. Limit person responses. B. Defend their own beliefs. C. Stress children’s performance. D. Ignore children’s math problems. 15. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Strategy Children Adopt to Learn Math Helps B. The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters C. Responses to Enhance Children’s Math Performance D. Suggestions for Parents to Teach Their Children Math Have you noticed how evenings cool off more in rural areas than they do in cities? Urban areas also tend to get hotter during the day than any nearby areas with lots of greenery.____16____ It’s mainly caused by the difference in materials that cover the ground in urban areas and the countryside. In the country, evaporation(蒸发)of water from soil and the leaves of plants helps to cool the air.____17____Having fewer plants, cities have less evaporation and are unable to cool down the temperature. Dark colours are another problem. Dark objects absorb all wavelengths of light, making the temperature increase more noticeably. In contrast, white objects reflect all wavelengths of light energy.____18____Sadly, most parts of cities are covered by asphalt(沥青), steel, roofs and bricks which are often dark in colour. ____19____As people drive cars, heat buildings, and run air conditioners, cities are generating waste heat andpouring it into the atmosphere directly. The waste heat adds to the solar energy trapped by the tall buildings. But cities don’t have to be so hot. Some cities have lightened their streets. This is done by covering black asphalt streets, parking lots, and dark roofs with a more reflective gray coating. ____20____ Having more green spaces also helps. Plants serve as a natural air conditioner. They catch heat, release vapour(蒸汽)into the air, and take away heat, contributing to cooler, fresher cities. A. Cities also produce more heat than suburban areas. B. The higher the temperature, the shorter the wavelength. C. This phenomenon is known as the urban heat-island effect. D. So it will not be transformed into heat which makes the air hot. E. Changes in building materials have a minimal effect on city temperatures. F. Much of the soil in cities, by contrast, has been covered with roads and buildings. G. These changes can decrease air temperatures dramatically, especially in summer. Rebecka Peterson, a high school math teacher, is the nation’s 2023 Teacher of the Year. In spring, the tree cheered up the grey concrete with its blossom. And, in summer, its shade comforted the restless heat. Gabe loved the tree. He and his friends played by it all the time. The tree’s blessing for the community, but not for Mr. Snider, the caretaker, who hated the tree. When he had to mow (割) the grass around it or sweep its blossoms or fallen leaves from the path, he would grumble (咕哝), “It’s in my way.” or “Who has to clean up all this mess? Me, that’s who!” Sometimes he threatened to cut it down. One morning before the coming New Year, Gabe spotted him walked towards the tree with a chainsaw (电锯). He shouted, “Mum! What’s Mr. Snider doing?” Mum put down her knitting needles — she was knitting everyone scarves and came over to the window. Gabe grabbed her hand and ran down two flights of stairs to the garden. Soon they were standing between Mr. Snider and the tree. “Out of my way,” said the caretaker. “Time for this eyesore (眼中钉) to go.” “This eyesore is of great public interest.” Mum tried to sound important. “And we love this tree,” begged Gabe. “Not a good enough reason.” Mr. Snider was getting his chainsaw ready. Gabe desperately tried to think of more reasons to keep the tree, then he remembered the toy tree he’d seen in town. It had colourful gift tags (礼品签) on it and written on every tag was the name of a toy a child had wished for. Mum had explained to him that if someone took a tag and bought the gift on it, the charity would send it to a child who might not get New Year presents. Gabe said, “It is going to be a toy tree.” ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ By the weekend, the charity tags had arrived.____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________2024 届培元中学高三年段 12 月份月考(英语科) 时间: 120分钟 第一部分听力(共两节, 满分30分) 做题时, 先将答案标在试卷上。 How much is the shirt? As a real delight to read, it’s the perfect literary escapism for any adult or older teenager who is currently walking down a tough road in life. 4. Which word best describes Durrell’s life in Corfu? A. Diverse. B. Busy. C. Risky. D. Tough. 5. C. The book’s writing feature. D. Some vivid descriptions of the island. 7. What is the purpose of this text? A. To share an experience. B. To introduce a writing style. C. To recommend a book. D. To describe an unusual place.【答案】4. A 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段“From cottages surrounded by impressive gardens to days spent exploring sandy beaches and deep woods filled with wildlife, in My Family and Other Animals, English writer Gerald Durrell provided a vivid account of his family’s time on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s. (从被令人印象深刻的花 园包围的小屋,到探索沙滩和充满野生动物的深林的日子,在《我的家人和其他动物》一书中,英国作家 Gerald Durrell生动地描述了20世纪30年代他的家人在希腊科孚岛的时光。)”可知,Durrell在科孚岛的生 活是多样的。故选A项。 根据语境和划线句前文“was intended to be a nostalgic(怀旧的)account of natural history, but in the first few pages,(本想成为一本关于自然史的怀旧书,)”和第一段提到的“English writer Gerald Durrell provided a vivid account of his family’s time on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s.(英国作家杰拉尔德•德雷 尔(Gerald Durrell)生动地描述了上世纪30年代他一家在希腊科孚岛的生活。)” 根据第四段中“Durrell’s attention to detail is what makes the book so winning, with every sight, sound and smell of the island brought to life. (Durrell对细节的关注使这本书如此引人入胜,岛上的每一个景 象、声音和气味都栩栩如生。)”和第五段“My Family and Other Animals is quite difficult to classify, being one part travel, one part autobiography, one part natural history, and one part comedy, with a thread of descriptive language running throughout that sometimes raises it nearly to poetry. (《我的家庭和其他动物》很难归类,一 部分是游记,一部分是自传,一部分是自然历史,一部分是喜剧,一种描述性的语言贯穿始终,有时几乎 把它提升到诗歌的境界。)”可知,这两段主要介绍了这本书的写作特点。故选C项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,根据最后一段“As a real delight to read, it’s the perfect literary escapism for any adult or older teenager who is currently walking down a tough road in life. (作为一种真正的阅读乐趣,对于任何目前 正走在艰难人生道路上的成年人或年龄较大的青少年来说,这是一种完美的文学逃避。)”可知,这篇文章的目的是为了推荐这本《我的家庭和其他动物》。故选C项。 C When put to tests, bees have long proved that they’ve got a lot more to offer than pollinating (授粉), making honey and being loyal to a queen. B. They are faithful to the queen. C. 11. What does Samadi Galpay say about the study result?A. It backs up prior understanding of insects. B. It reveals reasons for bees’ positive feelings. C. It drives research on animals’ emotional state. D. It contributes to wildlife conservation on Earth. A 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“The hard-working insects can change their behavior when things seem difficult, and now some scientists find there is proof that they also like to play.(当事情看起来很困难时,勤劳的昆虫可以改变 它们的行为,现在一些科学家发现有证据表明它们也喜欢玩耍)”可知,关于蜜蜂的新发现是它们喜欢玩乐。 故选A项。 根据第三段中“In this case, to get rid of external factors, scientists made sure the bees had adapted to their new home and that their environment was stress-free.(在这种情况下,为了消除外部因素,科学家们确 保蜜蜂已经适应了它们的新家,并且它们的环境没有压力)”可知,科学家通过让蜜蜂有家的感觉从而在实 验中消除外部影响。 根据第四段中Lars Chittka说的“This research provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more complicated than we imagine. There are lots of animals who play just for the purpose of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals and birds(这项研究有力地表明,昆虫的思维远比我们想象的复杂。 有很多动物只是为了享乐而玩耍,但大多数例子来自于年轻的哺乳动物和鸟类)”可知,Lars Chittka的话表 明了昆虫的思维非常复杂。故选B项。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“This finding has effects on our understanding of the sense and welfare of insects, which, consequently, encourages us to respect and protect wildlife on Earth ever more(这一发现影响了我们对昆 虫的感知和福利的理解,从而鼓励我们更加尊重和保护地球上的野生动物)”可知,该研究结果有助于保护 地球上的野生动物。故选D项。 D “You’re so smart!” This encouraging response to children’s math performance is commonly heard. Recently, anew study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math motivation and achievement over time. Parents who make comments linking their children’s performance to personal characteristics like intelligence , are using what’s referred to as person responses. In contrast parents who link their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses. Simply telling parents to avoid talking about math ability may not be enough. A. Limit person responses.B. Suggestions for Parents to Teach Their Children Math 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第二段中“In contrast, parents who link their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses. (相比之下,将孩子的行为(如努力或策略使用)与他们的 表现联系起来的父母使用的是过程反应。)”可知,将孩子的行为与他们的表现联系起来的父母使用的是过 程反应,分析四个选项,C项“What works well for your study? (什么对你的学习有效?)”将孩子的行为与 表现联系起来,符合语境,属于“过程反应”,故选C项。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“children who receive more responses about their personal characteristics — in particular, related to failure —are more likely to avoid harder math problems. exhibit higher levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests. (那些对自己的个人品质,尤其是与失败有关的品质,得到更多回 应的孩子,更有可能避免更难的数学问题,表现出更高的数学焦虑水平,并且在数学成绩测试中得分更 低)”可推理出,个人反应会阻碍孩子学习数学,故选D项。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Because person responses predict poor math adjustment in children over time, researcher suggest parents limit this type of responses at home.(因为人的反应预示着孩子的数学适应能力会随 着时间的推移而变差,研究人员建议父母在家里限制这种反应。)” 通读整篇文章,尤其是第一段中“Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities mightweaken their math motivation and achievement over time. (最近,乔治亚大学进行的一项新研究发现,随着时 间的推移,鼓励孩子用与他们的个人特征或天生能力相关的回答可能会削弱他们的数学动机和成就。)”可 知,文章主要内容是说父母对孩子的数学学习做出不同的反应,会对孩子产生不同的作用;用与个人特征 或天生能力相关的反应来鼓励孩子,可能会削弱他们的数学动机和成绩。所以B项“The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters (父母与孩子谈论数学的方式很重要)”作为本文的题目与文章主题相符合。 Have you noticed how evenings cool off more in rural areas than they do in cities? ____19____As people drive cars, heat buildings, and run air conditioners, cities are generating waste heat and pouring it into the atmosphere directly. C 17. F 18. D 19. A 20. 根据上文提示“Have you noticed how evenings cool off more in rural areas than they do in cities? Urban areas also tend to get hotter during the day than any nearby areas with lots of greenery.”(你有没有注意到,农村的夜晚比城市凉爽得多? 所以,C项“This phenomenon is known as the urban heat-island effect.”(这种现象 被称为城市热岛效应。) F选项“Much of the soil in cities, by contrast, has been covered with roads and buildings.”(相比之下,城市的大部分土壤已经被道路和建筑物覆盖。)的“城市的土地被道路和建筑覆 盖”与前一句“evaporation of water from soil and the leaves of plants helps to cool to air”(土壤和植物叶子 中的水分蒸发有助于冷却到空气中)形成转折关系。这两句回应第二段主题句“It’s mainly caused by the difference in materials that cover the ground in urban areas and the countryside.”(这主要是由于城市和农村覆 盖地面的材料不同造成的。) 空前句子“In contrast, white objects reflect all wavelengths of light energy” (相反,白色物体反射所有波长的光能)和D选项“So it will not be transformed into heat which makes the air hot.”(所以它不会转化为使空气变热的热量。) A选项“Cities also produce more heat than suburban areas.”(城市也比郊区产生 更多的热量。)中的“produce more heat(产生更多的热量)”与选项下一句“As people drive cars, heat buildings, and run air conditioners, cities are generating waste heat and pouring it into the atmosphere directly.”(随着 人们开车、给建筑物供暖和使用空调,城市正在产生废热,并将其直接排放到大气中。) 故选A。 G选项中的“these changes(这些变 化)”对应了选项前面一句的方法,即,“covering black asphalt streets, parking lots, and dark roofs with a more reflective gray coating”(覆盖黑色沥青街道、停车场和深色屋顶的反光性更强的灰色涂层)。同时, G选项“These changes can decrease air temperatures dramatically, especially in summer.”(这些变化会使气温 急剧下降,尤其是在夏天。) Rebecka Peterson, a high school math teacher, is the nation’s 2023 Teacher of the Year. “Time for this eyesore (眼中钉) to go.” “This eyesore is of great public interest.” Mum tried to sound important.“And we love this tree,” begged Gabe. Gabe said, “It is going to be a toy tree.” ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ By the weekend, the charity tags had arrived. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ 【答案】Possible version: Gabe said, “it is going to be a toy tree.” He explained that they were going to decorate it and put tags on it so they can buy presents for children who need them. Then he flashed a look for help at his mum. “Yes,” Mum said enthusiastically, "Mr Snider, we’re decorating it this weekend." Mr. Snider looked suspicious. He almost turned purple trying to think up an argument, but he was beaten. He lowered his chainsaw and stormed off. That evening, Gabe and his mum put up posters to let everyone know about the toy tree, and they contacted the charity to get tags. By the weekend, the charity tags had arrived. The whole community came to decorate the tree. They sang as they hung tags, and it felt like a party. The bare tree soon looked dazzling. Everyone went home, beamingly, with a tag from the toy tree. As Gabe stepped back to admire everyone’s handiwork, he spotted Mr Snider looking out of his window with a frown. Gabe waved at him. “We leave one tag for you!” With hesitation, Mr. Snider let out a sigh, then walked to the toy tree and took it down. At that moment, the tree was not an eyesore any more. 叹气:let out a sigh /sigh ③.发现:spot/notice 情绪类 ①.热情地:enthusiastically /with enthusiasm ②.怀疑的:suspicious/doubtful ③.喜气洋洋地:beamingly /joyfully 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
