Large gatherings such as weddings and conferences can be socially overwhelming.Pressure to learn people's
names only adds to the stress. A new facial- recognition app could come to the rescue, but privacy experts
recommendproceedingwithcaution.
The app, called Social Recall, connects names with faces via smartphone cameras and facial recognition,
potentially avoiding the need for formal introductions.“It breaks down these social barriers we all have when
meeting somebody,” says Barry Sandrew, who created the app and tested it at an event attended by about 1,000
people.
After receiving an invitation to download Social Recall from an event organizer, the user is asked to take two
selfie s and sign in via social media. At the event, the app is active within a previously defined geographical area.
When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee's face, the app identifies the individual, displays the
person's name, and links to his or her social media profile. To protect privacy, it recognizes only those who have
agreedtoparticipate.Andtheapp'screatorssayitautomaticallydeletesusers'dataafteranevent.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Ann Cavoukian, a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app's
creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal
information with the app, they should know that"there may be unintended consequences down the road with that
informationbeingusedinanothercontextthatmightcomebacktobiteyou."
The start-up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia, or"face
blindness,"a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met. To use this app, a person

To putit simply, stress can be the father of growth, while a crisis can be the mother of innovation. The notion

In 1598, William Shakespeare笔 ed the play As You Like It. One of the most famous lines from that play is
spoken in Act 2 Scene 1 by Duke Senior,“Sweet are the uses of adversity which, like the toad (癞蛤蟆), ugly and

Fast- forward to the great silent film star Mary Pickford. She was called the most popular actress in the world
inthe 1910sand1920s. Failingto continueactingwith the adventof the“talkies”(movies with recordedsound),she
co- founded the film company United Artists. Shifting her talents to producing and directing, she became the most
powerfulwomanintheentertainmentindustry.Sheoncenoted,“Youmayhaveafreshstartanymomentyouchoose,

Rather than fear and try to avoid adversity, perhaps we should accept the inevitability(必然) of adversity and
prepareforit.Indeed,positivethingscanemergefromadversity.
Adversity reveals true opportunities for those preparing to take advantage. Dr. JohnKrumboltz's happenstance
theorystates thatcareer andlife developmentis bestfostered bypreparingfor opportunities thatyou maynotknow
even exist in the current moment.Numerous unpredictable factors are potentially shaping the future. These include
thecrisesadversitybrings.
In Friedrich Nietzsche's book, Behold the Man, the German philosopher writes that a person who has“turned
out well” could be recognized by the ability to take advantage of and prosper from adversity, just as he wrote
before,“Whatdoesnotkillhimmakeshimstronger.”
