main road and hid gold coins under the stone. Then he hid behind a huge tree and watched.
The first person down the street was a milkman with his car (小车). He crashed into the stone and the milk
spread all over the ground. “What fool put this stone here? “he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went
away.
After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped
over (绊倒) the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and walked away in
tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone, but he found nobody was willing to
move it. The king wondered, “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbors
from harm?”
Just then, the king saw a young girl coming along. She was the daughter of a local farmer. She had been
working all day and was very tired. But when she saw the stone, she said to herself. “This stone is a danger to
anyone who comes down the road after dark. I’ll move it out of the way.”
After a great deal of effort, the girl finally succeeded in moving the stone to the side of the road. Imagine her
surprise when she saw the gold coins where the stone had been!
Just then, the king stepped out from behind the tree. “Oh sir,” the girl said, “Is this gold yours? If not, we
surely must find the owner, for he will certainly miss it.”
The king said, “My dear, the gold is mine, but now the gold is yours, because you are the only person who has

As usual, Amber was hurrying to catch the yellow school bus. Luckily the traffic lights turned green as she
was to cross the road, so she made it. When the bus passed the golden arches(拱形门) of McDonald’s, they
reminded her of a hamburger. She hadn’t had breakfast that morning because the fruit salad on the blue dish didn’t
look delicious at all. However, Amber remembered that she was still on a diet. So now she was really in a black
mood.
You may have noticed that several colors were used in the above story so as to help describe Amber’s
morning. In fact, colors influence your life more than you can ever imagine. Take language for example: You may
describe a sick person as being “a bit green”. To describe a depressed(沮丧的) person, you say that the person is
“feeling blue”. In short, colors do add interest to daily conversations.
Besides, colors can be used in many parts of your daily life. Have you ever thought about why many school
buses and taxis are painted yellow, and stop signs red? Since yellow is the most eye-catching color, it can catch
people’s attention, especially in heavy traffic. As for red, it is the color which usually shows warning, as a result,
some traffic signs use this color. For the same reason, hot-water taps are usually marked red.
The colors of a dining environment possibly decide how much you eat. Most fast-food restaurants are often
decorated in bright colors such as red, yellow, orange, and white for the purpose of increasing people’s appetites(胃
口). This is because bright colors are natural colors found in many foods, and, therefore, able to raise people’sspirits. Blue, in comparison with bright colors, is said to lower people’s appetites because few foods are blue in
nature. For those who are on a diet, blue dishes and bowls might help!
“Morning, Amber! What happened? You look a bit green,” said Violet, Amber’s best friend.
“Nothing … just feeling … blue,” said Amber.
“Hey! Come to my place tonight. Do you know what I just bought? A Wii! It’s red-hot.”
Amber was tickled pink to have the chance to play with the Wii and said, “Sounds great!”
41. According to the passage, if you are on a diet, ________ might help.
A. putting your food in a blue dish or bowl
B. turning on a yellow light during the meal
C. painting the walls of the dining table with an orange cloth
D. covering the dining table with an orange cloth
42. Most school buses are painted yellow because ________.
A. it tells other drivers to prepare to stop B. it helps bus drivers stay in a good mood
C. it can easily catch other people’s attention D. it is the color that most school
43. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Amber looked ill when Violet saw her first.
B. Amber ate up all her fruit salad in the morning.
C. Amber refused to go to Violet’s house in the end.
D. Amber didn’t catch the school bus and was late for school.
44. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Colors influence people’s daily lives.
B. Most fast-food restaurants are painted grey.
C. Different colors are used for different purposes.
D. Colors make daily conversations more interesting.
45. What can we infer(推断) from the passage?
A. Amber was not fat at all.
B. Amber cheered up at Violet’s invitation at last.
C. Violet didn’t know how colors influenced our lives.
D. Arches of McDonald’s are painted gold only to make them beautiful.

四、阅读表达 阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。Paying for bus rides with plastic usually makes people think of plastic bus cards. But one Indonesian city has
decided to accept plastic recyclable waste in place of money for city buses.
Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city. located on the eastern end of the country’s main island Java, made:
this decision in April 2018. Now, locals can pay for their bus rides by putting plastic cups or bottles directly on the
bus. A two-hour bus ride costs 10 plastic cups or 5 bottles.
Indonesia is the second largest ocean plastic polluter, producing up to 2.4 million tons of plastic waste into the
oceans every year according to a report. Only in Surabaya nearly 400 tons of plastic waste is produced every day.
The head of Surabaya’s transportation department (交通部门) said, “With this decision, we hope to raise public
awareness about environment, especially people’s awareness about plastic waste.”
Each city bus can collect up to 550 pounds of plastic bottles and cups every day The collected bottles are sold
to recycling companies and the money earned from it goes toward running the bus companies and providing money
for green spaces in the city. This is certainly turning rubbish into a national treasure.
The decision is part of the city s purpose to become plastic waste-free by 2020. In order to encourage local
people to take buses, the city also added the new Suroboyo buses. The new buses are air-conditioned, comfortable
and easy for elderly and disabled passengers to get on and off.
The program is well received. People in Surabaya said, “We can reduce waste so it doesn’t pile up at home
because we can just bring it in and make good use of it. It is a win-win situation.”
This type of program can be a model for other cities worldwide and encourage citizens to recycle their plastic
waste.

五、任务型阅读 阅读下面的短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当
的单词,每个空格只填一个单词。
Noisy neighbors are a common problem in a society where many people live closely together. And this can be
most important when you share walls, floors or ceilings with neighbors in a flat. A noisy neighbor can make life
challenging, especially if noise goes well into night, or happens during early morning hours. This situation needs to
be dealt with properly, which requires your ability to keep calm.
,
You should first try to tell your noisy neighbors about the noise. This conversation should be polite even
friendly. It can begin with a statement like. “I am not sure you are aware”. Explain the problem in an honest way,
and ask the neighbor to turn down the music, or not to hold parties until 3 a.m. You can also add that you realize
they hear your noise too, and you are certainly willing to try to stop anything in your behavior that is creating extra
noise.
You should know that not all neighbors are going to follow your requirement, and some may act in a bad
manner. If the noisy neighbors don’t change their behavior, the next step should be to write the neighbors a letter.
The letter should show your grievances (不满) and the dates when the noise was quite terrible. For example, if your
neighbor has loud gatherings every Friday night that last into the early morning then write down those dates.
When the noise remains going on, you should report it to local authorities (权力部门), or even the police
department, when it is really necessary. Often, however, the problem is solved when the noisy neighbor knows you
are going to call the police.
Do be aware that you cannot always require noisy neighbors to be quiet. When the noise remains going on, it
is wise not to deal with it in an angry or retaliatory (报复性的) fashion. If you have completed the steps and letter,
don’t start hitting walls or floors around in your home or turning up the music to make your neighbors angry. Just
have patience and remember that communication is the most important.
