blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
I can still remember the afternoon when we climbed the mountain as if it were yesterday.
It was a sunny day. Eager to spend some time outside, I went up the mountain with my uncle. The mountain
was hard 21 (climb) and had tough rocks and streams on it. In the end, exhausted and hot, I couldn’t go
any 22 (far). So we went back down the mountain in the end.
On the way back down, my uncle asked me a question 23 left me speechless for a second: “What’s
your dream, young lady?”
“I have no idea,” I answered 24 thinking it for a while. Then he smiled and told me about his story.
He didn’t perform well at school when he was a student. Although nobody thought he could succeed, he knew
clearly 25 his dream was-to be a businessman. “I knew I wasn’t gifted when it came to studying, 26
I tried to buy snacks from a market and sell them after class,” he told me. After he left school, he started selling
different items to find out which one was most attractive to customers. Of course, he often had no money in his
pocket, but however tough life was, he never gave up.
“There is no doubt that a person who puts in a great deal of effort to reach his or her goal will have good luck
at some point. The meaning of life is to chase your dream,” he said gently. That night I 27 hardly fall
asleep. I lay in bed tossing and turning, asking myself, “What’s my motivation?”
I once wanted to be a top student, but the hard work needed meant putting everything into following my
passion. If I find myself lacking willpower, what should I do? Leaving home early the next morning, I climbed the
mountain again by myself. It made me think: 28 we don’t experience the climb, how can we get to see
the scenery on the top of the mountain? In the end, I reached the top and 29 (fascinate) by the warm
breeze and sunshine. 30 could be more pleasant than that.

My past students are starting to organize a scientific conference for my 60th birthday to be held about a year
from now. Their gesture reminded me of Rabbi Hanina’s words: “I have learned much from my teachers, more

We all started as students. Just as kids bump into things as they’re learning to 41 the world, many of
us have scars from early encounters with our mentors. 42 arise when those mentors attempt to establish
their authority by trying to make us respect traditional thinking. Memories of these events should encourage us to
do better as we 43 roles and mentor others later in life.
For example, the first advice I received from my postdoctoral mentor was to develop specialized skills and
focus them on a 44 field, where I would establish myself as the world expert. 45 , I decided not
to follow this advice as soon as I recognized by drilling down narrowly, one often fails to make further progress. In
these situations, the potential for a 46 improves with a broader and more flexible perspective, which
enables “out of the box” opportunities for drilling deeper around it.
Keeping this in mind, I encourage my students to think broadly and 47 about the most exciting
problems in astronomy, such as: “What happened before the big bang?”; “What will happen in our distant cosmic
future?”; “What is the nature of dark matter?”; or “When did life start in the universe?”
It is customary to consider a student’s raw potential as a stand-alone commodity whose value can be 48
through examinations. But my experience taught me that young scientists do not blossom into exceptional
researchers 49 they are supported by encouraging words and inspiration; these ingredients are as 50
as nutrition and water are for seeds of flowers. 51 the initial belief in the potential of a student to
become a successful scientist, this outcome may not come true.
As chair of the Harvard astronomy department for almost a decade, I witnessed many examples of students
who were initially very slow to make progress but blossomed academically as soon as they selected a different
advisor and a new topic for their Ph. D.A good mentor 52 the strengths of the mentee. As a result, a
successful mentoring experience often reflects a good 53 between a fledgling(新手的) scientist and
an advisor. They should both be congratulated for their shared academic DNA.
On the one hand, mentors get a kick from Oscar Wilde’s insight: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...”
But on the other hand, they should allow students to break free from the 54 path with creativity. The
rule of thumb is to give young scholars just enough space to explore freely and learn from their 55
without damaging the direction of their future careers. The learning curves could be steep; some of my 50 students
over the past few decades started slow but eventually rose to the greatest heights. Patience is key.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished
statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according
to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
People always regret asking me and my wife how we got together. It’s a long story, involving other
relationships and several countries, and to be honest, it’s not that interesting, so I’ll spare you the details. We were
at a restaurant in Tuscany on our summer holiday last year though, when we met another English couple who had a
far more interesting story than us. Lynn and Andy had actually met online before they got together, or at least they
thought they had. After a few casual conversations through an online dating agency, they decided to meet for real.
Lynn arrived at the restaurant first, and shortly after was approached by Andy, who thought she was someone else.
It turns out they’d both arranged to meet different people, but liked the look of each other, and that was that!
And they’re not alone. It seems there are all sorts of places you might meet that special someone. Lukas met
Sofie for the first time when he crashed into her car—on his bicycle. “It was raining and I was coming downhill
really fast, so I couldn’t really see where I was going. Sofie opened her car door and I went straight into it, and off
my bike,” explains Lukas. “I was unconscious for a few seconds, and when I came round there was this beautiful
young woman asking me ‘Are you OK?’ Well, after that, she went to the hospital with me and was just really kind,

学科网(北京)股份有限公司really caring, and we hit it off.”
Every cloud has a silver lining, so they say, and Nick McKiddie would most likely agree. He was leaving the
office late one night when he got robbed by a group of young men. He wasn’t hurt, but they stole his phone and
wallet, so he called the police. Susan Harris, a young police officer at the time, attended the call. Nick explains, “I
don’t know whether I was in shock because of what had happened, but I think it was love at first sight. I would
never usually be so confident, but I just asked if she wanted to go for a drink sometime, and to my surprise, she said
yes! “Nick and Susan got married last December.”
Animals don’t have the same social inhibitions (顾虑) as humans do, and this was certainly the case when Ri
took her dog, Ben, to the local dog park. “As soon as I took his leash off, he ran straight to another dog on the other
side of the park, and started getting very friendly indeed,” she laughs. “I actually had to pull him away, and that was
when I met Ben, the other dog’s owner. We had a good laugh about it all, especially when we realized he had the
same name as my dog. We became friends after that, and well, the rest is history.”
56.According to the passage, Lynn and Andy________.
A.first met in a restaurant in Tuscany
B.had originally arranged to see other people
C.regretted talking to each other online
D.preferred casual conversations to serious dating
57.________got to know each other due to an accident.
A.The author and his wife B.Nick and Susan C.Lukas and SofieD.Ri and Ben
58.By “Every cloud has a silver lining” (in paragraphs), the author means that________.
A.every day is a good beginning B.every misfortune contains something good
C.people do not always behave as usual D.what you value in life matters greatly
59.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How the author and his wife met each other.
B.The places where people usually get together.
C.How great relationships may grow out of random encounters.
D.What people do in order to meet their ideal partner.

Have you watched the popular TV series Meet Yourself? In the TV series, the heroine Xu Hongdou travels to
a village in Yunnan province and volunteers at a local cafe. She gets free meals in return. As the show finds a
growing audience, volunteer travel — an old-yet-modern form of travel similar to Xu’s type of work — has
attracted more attention.
These volunteer trips are usually arranged by church organizations, human interest groups or nonprofit
organizations, and they take form of equal exchanges. During the trip, volunteer travelers often provide services
like teaching, cooking, animal caring, and cultural activities. In exchange for their help, the volunteers may get free
or discounted accommodations, meals and laundry activities, or classes.
It seems as if these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transportation.
Nevertheless, volunteer travel dates back to the 1960s, when Alec Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded
Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO), an international volunteer organization.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself
describes, more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteers live in recently.
Sanlian Life week magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban
visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living. Yang Yan, a founder of a volunteer platform, told
the magazine that it has indeed been a growing trend for urban residents to volunteer in rural areas.
People try volunteer travel for several reasons. By working voluntarily while traveling, travelers may make a
real, positive impact on the world. The services volunteers provide can be through charities with lower costs for the
communities they serve. Another benefit of volunteer travel is that it helps urban residents to get a taste of rural life.
For those who are sick of urban pressure but can’t make up their minds whether to move permanently to the
countryside, volunteer travel can be a solution.

Section C
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence
can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. What Makes Risk-Takers Tempt
Fate?
Moments before throwing herself off a thousand-foot cliff, Steph Davis feels a surge of fear and excitement.
As she pushes away from the edge, these mixed feelings give way to an intense rush, then deep focus. She must
position her body just so for her wingsuit (滑翔服) to fill with air. Then, she must open her parachute (降落伞)
at precisely the right moment and nail her landing, often within the span of 60 seconds.
67 In the face of such fatal consequences, why are some people still drawn to risky attempts? The
answer may lie in a complex mix of genetic, environmental and psychological factors.
试卷第11页,共14页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Even before we are born, our appetite for risk may be mapped out in our DNA.Cynthia Thomson’s study
found that individuals who reported riskier behavior usually shared a similar genetic constitution (构成).
Scientists believe that people with this genetic variant produce more dopamine receptors. “So they need to seek out
intense situations to bring up their dopamine levels,” says Thomson.
68 Several studies have shown that risk-taking behavior is linked to the earliest bonds (关系) we
form with our primary caretakers. Those with less secure attachments are more likely to engage in dangerous
activities.
There is the common idea that extreme sports enthusiasts are chasing thrills. But Tim Woodman, a professor at
the Bangor University in Wales, suggests that it is about something altogether different: emotion regulation. In his
view, those who take part in high-risk sports often have difficulty experiencing emotions, a condition called
alexithymia. 69 “It’s rewarding because they’ve moved from a feeling of inadequacy to a sense of
achievement,” says Woodman.
For years, professional skiers, BASE jumpers, and climbers have argued that they are not reckless (鲁莽的).
______70_____ What people get from extreme sports is deeply transformational—a sense of connecting with a
deep sense of self and being authentic, a powerful relationship with the natural world, a sense of freedom. They get
a strong sense of living life to its fullest as if touching their full potential.
A.Now, research suggests that they are right.
B.They seek out extreme sports as a way to actually feel.
C.Extreme sports such as wingsuiting are gaining popularity.
D.However, most scientists agree that personality is a complex mix of environmental and genetic influences.
E.They are actually extremely well-prepared athletes with high levels of self-awareness and a deep knowledge of
the environment.
F.According to a study by the University of Colorado School of Medicine, 76 percent of wingsuiters have
experienced a close call.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO
MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
Cycling isn’t always easy. Busy streets, honking horns, and inadequate bike lanes can make it an uphill battle.
But not even these difficulties can stop Europeans’ passion for cycling. According to BBC, bicycles outsold cars in
most of the European Union’s states last year.
试卷第12页,共14页There are traditional bicycle capitals”, such as Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Copenhagen in Denmark.
But in many other traditionally car-made countries, the shift to bikes is striking. Italians, for instance, bought 1.6
million bikes against 1.4 million cars in 2012.
So what has led to cycling’s growing popularity in Europe?
The economic crisis has played an important role in the issue. “The economic crisis has had an effect on all
areas of people’s lives, including on transport,” Giulietta Pagliaccio, head of the Italian cycling federation FIAB,
told the Australian Associated Press.
Since the European debt crisis broke out in 2009, more people lost their jobs while the cost of living, including
fuel costs, continued to rise. It forced many people to give up driving to save money, the Guangzhou-based New
Express commented. Take Greece, a country seriously hit by the crisis, for example. It sold 320,000 bikes last year
against 58,000 cars.
More importantly, people have changed their views toward cars and bikes. Cars are losing their appeal as
status symbols. Yet, cycling is now seen as “a safe, clean, healthy, inexpensive way to get around town”, the Daily
Star concluded. “It not only reduces traffic jam and pollution, but also contributes to public health.”
However, with more and more people turning to cycling, questions remain about traffic and safety problems.
To ease people’s worries, dozens of cities have joined a European Union to make bicycles equal to cars as a
form of urban transport. Quite a few cities now offer well-marked bike lanes, such as the cycling super-highway
marked in blue in London. It runs all over the city, from the center to the suburbs.
