If you are a wildlife lover, here are some programs you can choose.  Animal Rescue Project, South Africa You will be working with experienced conservationists in Cape Town. A significant challenge is to find new homes for homeless dogs and cats. The project comprises two sections: a fully equipped animal hospital and an adoption center focusing on securing new homes. Due to limited funding, the center can only afford a small number of permanent staff, relying heavily on wildlife lovers to assist with daily tasks and provide hands-on care for these animals.  Turtle Conservation Project, Sri Lanka Recent years have witnessed a significant decline in the sea turtle numbers due to numerous commercial fishing. As a wildlife lover, your role extends to supporting hatcheries (孵化场) in their conservation efforts. Additionally, your involvement helps these hatcheries with funds, as we provide a placement fee for each wildlife lover, enabling them to generate additional income.  Wildlife Conservation Program, Australia You will be engaged in activities such as animal feeding, cleaning, maintenance, and enrichment. This program provides an incredible opportunity to gain first-hand international work experience. For you, this program is an excellent choice. Not only will you contribute to a noble cause, but it also offers a fantastic opportunity to meet people from around the world.  Marine Conservation Program, Bali You will be working in Tianyar, where the reef is now in a worsening state. The project was initiated to restore and conserve Tianyar's coral reef, not only to protect its remarkable and delicate ecosystems but also to secure a sustainable future for the residents. 21. What problem does the adoption center meet with? A. Insufficient equipment. B. Insecure surroundings. C. Shortage of shelters. D. Lack of hands.22. Which program will offer financial assistance? A. Animal Rescue Project, South Africa. B. Turtle Conservation Project, Sri Lanka. C. Wildlife Conservation Program, Australia. D. Marine Conservation Program, Bali. 23. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To promote program cooperation. B. To advocate restoring ecosystems. C. To introduce endangered species protection. D. To encourage engagement with wildlife preservation. B Andrea Lankford quit her job after spending 12 years as a National Park Service forester specializing in search and rescue missions in scenic and remote American landcapes. However, decades later, three young hikers went missing on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). She found herself unable to turn away from the three separate cases despite challenges in the inquiry into them. Trail of the Lost was her answer. It's an absorbing nonfiction narrative(叙事)about the three hikers, including their lives and those of the people looking for them. It also explores the history of the PCT and the rich subculture, practices and even literature that surround it and those who undertake the 2,650-mile journey. The book is a rich multilayered narrative that works on three different levels. The first is the story of each of the three hikers. Lankford offers a biography of each of the missing men and shows them through the eyes of those who knew them well and those who joined the search. Right underneath the narratives about the three hikers are the stories of everyone looking for them. Lankford played a role in each search but she allowed friends, family and even strangers to occupy center stage throughout most of the narrative. The story looks at the role of missing person Facebook groups in the searches and how crucial word of mouth can be. Many warm-hearted individuals came forth and became instrumental in the searches or provided valuable information. But Lankford also writes of the many who lied for no apparent reason and confused the investigations. The narrative also shines a light on diverse aspects of the PCT. Lankford, who has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and was the first person to mountain bike the 800-mile Arizona Trail, knows just how the PCT is physically and mentally demanding. Besides, the book explores threats from mountain lions to people with bad intentions who don't observe the PCT's unspoken moral rules, serving as a revelation of the well-known, hidden or ignored dangers of the PCT. Written with a clear, fast-paced, straightforward style, Trail of the Lost is as full of hope and humanity as it is packed with pain, sorrow, danger and tension. Read it and you'll find more than you seek. 24. What led Lankford to write Trail of the Lost? A. Her love for her prior career. B. Her strong attachment to the PCT. C. The stress from the missing families. D. Her investigation into hikers' disappearance. 25. What is presented on the second level of the book? A. Efforts by different people in searches. B. A string of wilderness survival tips. C. Approaches to information classification. D. Respective stories of the three hikers. 26. What's the purpose of mentioning Lankford's previous adventures? A. To promote her book. B. To make her a celebrity. C. To motivate hikers to challenge themselves. D. To stress the difficulty of hiking the PCT. 27. What can we say about the book? A. It targets single youth. B. It's a romantic novel. C. It's based on actual events. D. It's a detailed account of a journey. CThe latest data shows the population of wild Asian elephants in southwest China's Yunnan Province has increased from around 150 to more than 300 from the 1980s to the end of 2021, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. With the growth in the elephant population, conflicts between humans and elephants have become frequent. In order to fundamentally and peacefully solve the issue and protect the elephant's habitat at the same time, construction of the Asian elephant National Park is picking up speed. Experts suggest that national parks are not meant to be entirely free of people. Instead, they should offer a method for coexistence. Asian elephants play an important role as engineers of the rainforest, said the expert. Their migration (迁徙) can speed up the replacement of forest ecosystems along the way. Elephant waste remains not only a delicacy for insects, but also attracts insectivorous birds, allowing plant seeds to spread. Therefore, protecting the elephants and their habitats guarantees the shelter to other wildlife in forest ecosystems. To cope with human-elephant conflicts, Yunnan took the lead in introducing a commercial insurance model into its compensation(补偿)system: local residents will be paid with the amount of money for the crops destroyed by the elephants by the insurance company. In the past 10 years, Yunnan has paid a total of 173 million yuan for losses caused by Asian elephants. "The standard of compensation is constantly being adjusted, and the amount of insurance coverage for compensation is also increasing," said Yang Hua from the Forestry and Grass Bureau of Yunnan Province. "At present, the insured amount in Pu'er City and Xishuangbanna Prefecture alone has already gone beyond 50 million." 28. Why does the author mention the growing population of wild Asian elephants? A. To promote a better environment. B. To introduce a possible crisis. C. To applaud the efforts of the government. D. To stress the importance of the elephants. 29. What does the underlined word "insectivorous" mean in paragraph 3? A. Feeding on insects. B. Driving away insects. C. Letting go of insects. D. Keeping track of insects. 30. What has been done to tackle conflicts between elephants and humans? A. Construction of undisturbed national parks. B. Support of Asian elephants' migration. C. Constant adjustment of insurance policies. D. Guarantee of the shelter to other wildlife. 31. What might be the best title? A. Asian elephants, engineers of the rainforest B. Insurance adjusted, compensation increased C. Population of wild Asian elephants shoots up in China D. China explores solutions to achieve human-elephant harmony D Four-legged robots like Boston Dynamics' Spot and Cheetah owe almost all their quickness to fancy footwork. In biology, however, a four-legged animal's movement, flexibility, and complex motor functions come almost entirely from its spine (脊柱). If artificial spines could be put into such designs, engineers could find entirely new approaches to accurate mobility. Now, engineers are reportedly a few steps further towards spine-center, four-legged bots, thanks to a research team's rat-inspired robot. NeRmo is a biomimetic and four-legged robot that depends on an innovative motor-tendon(运动肌 腱的)structure to move around environments. As far as looks go, NeRmo mirrors a mouse's bone system. The robot's solid front half houses its electronic systems, while its latter half functions much as an actual flexible spine would. Artificial tendons passing through the spine as wellas the robot's arm and knee joints allow NeRmo even more mouse-like movements alongside quicker turning times. NeRmo's tendon system prevented the need for any muscle while still allowing for smooth bending capabilities, i. e. side-to-side, and up-and-down. To test their new design, the team ran NeRmo through a series of four experiments to demonstrate balancing, straight-line walking, quick turning, and maze navigation(导航). Each trial included two rounds-one with the spinal system engaged, and the other with it disabled. Across the board, NeRmo performed the tasks better, faster, and more accurately when it combined the spine with its movements. Maze navigation, however, was NeRmo's true shining moment. With its spine engaged, the mouse-bot completed its maze runs much faster than simply wandering through without spinal support. Although still in its early stages, researchers believe further design involving the spinal systems in future four-legged robots could vastly improve their functionality. If NeRmo wasn't proof enough, think of it this way——MIT's Cheetah can run 13 feet per second with just one joint copying the bending of the spine forward and backward. NeRmo, meanwhile, has eight joints. 32. What is the limitation of Boston Dynamics' Spot and Cheetah? A. Having an unattractive appearance. B. Referring to few biological bases. C. Having a strict range of applications. D. Lacking spine-based moving accuracy. 33. Which of the following makes NeRmo move more like mice? A. The tendon system. B. The bone system. C. The muscle system. D. The knee joint. 34. What did the four testing experiments find? A. NeRmo had a great sense of direction. B. The spinal system bettered NeRmo's movement. C. NeRmo without an artificial spine lost control easily. D. Artificial spines gave hope to disabled animals. 35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Putting NeRmo into use has difficulties in practice. B. Reducing the number of joints in robots is necessary. C. Applying spinal systems to robots has a promising outlook. D. Creating more four-legged robots is a matter of time. 第二节 (共5 小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Clean a House Cleaning your house seems like a fairly self-explanatory task, but when you sit down to think about it, you might realize that you have a lot of questions. 36 We'll work it down into a process that seems simple enough to tackle. Decide how clean you want your house to be and how much time you have. 37 So, be honest with yourself about what you can do, how much time you have, and how motivated you're feeling. 38 You don't want to vacuum and then get crumbs(面包屑) all over the floor, or dust the bottom of something and knock more dust down when you work your way up onto the previously uncleaned areas. If you don 't have much time, start with the mess first and work your way to more serious things from there. Make a checklist and a plan of attack. Know which rooms you plan to start and finish your cleaning in. This will help speed up the process and ensure you are not repeating your efforts, especially if more than one person is involved in the cleaning. You can follow the steps in the cleaning part in order. 39 Attempt to delegate tasks. If you live with other people, cleaning the house should not be exclusively your responsibility! You may have to take on leadership by setting up a rotational(轮流的) cleaning schedule, but it's far betterthan having to do this backbreaking work alone. 40 For example, grade school children can pick up their bedroom floors, teenagers can clean the garage or bathroom, etc. Once you get started, you won 't want to stop until the whole house is spotless and organized. A. For example, how do you clean a toilet? B. Work from the top down, if at all possible. C. Once you get started, make sure it is equal. D. Make sure the tasks assigned are age-appropriate. E. Should this really be something you do in everyday life? F.This way, you'll have a checklist already written out for you. G. This will help you decide how to set up your cleaning schedule. One ordinary afternoon, seeking an old novel for research, I wandered into a cluttered secondhand bookstore. When they passed by Tubman Park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still youngschoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often. As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they’d seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns. The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn’t help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help. Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours,” said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up. Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting._________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news.________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________
