Ever the innovator to entertain its customers, this Masschetusettes cafe recently came up with a novel
attraction for its customers. “Walk in and give us your BEST dance moves for 5 seconds,” reads a sign
displayed on the entrance door. If you do so, you can get a cup of coffee for free.
The unexpected dance venue? Coffee Milano, which serves the most delicious coffee, drinks, breakfast
and lunch all day long, seven days a week.
The response to Coffee Milano's promotion was electric, with multiple customers eager to show off
their best dance moves. “It was fun, energetic and smiley,” says Joshua Rashid, the cafe owner of the
small family-owned business. “Funny dances can really improve customers’ mood.”
It's no secret that acting happy, moving and music can get you feeling better, even if it's a bit
unnatural at first. Brainly, a knowledge-sharing community, discusses the so-called“Facial feedback
effect”.
This is documented in studies showing that forcing a smile can still boost mood and happiness levels. This
is likely because when people smile, their brains release something that helps to reduce stress.
On November 23, 2024, a video of the dancing customers became a hit online, amassing an
astonishing 7.6million views online since it was posted.
“We just thought it was going to be a small thing for the people that come in every day,” admits
Oliver Svensen, social media director at Coffee Milano. She says the huge success of the campaign is due
to the vicarious(间接感受到的)pleasure of seeing people feeling happy and expressing themselves, rather
than the free drink alone.
“I am still processing this. I didn't realize the power of the Internet,” says Rashid. “More
customers are coming in and dancing.” He plans to make this joyful event a monthly fixture. “It was
amazing and fun. The customers kept asking when the next one would be!” he says.

Playgrounds have been made significantly safer. There are soft surfaces to play on and all the
dangerous play equipment like tall metal slides where children jumped on and off at high speeds have been
replaced by much safer plastic swings and climbing structures.
Has removing the risk also removed the fun and the challenge? In Amsterdam, the Dutch capital, local
officials believe so. That's why they want to replace boring playgrounds with spaces that allow kids to
play with water, climb, sword-fight with sticks, wrestle and fall.
“The inspiration is that children are hardly moving, which is a huge problem,” says Rob Hofland,
one of the officials. “They are attracted to a more engaging screen, sitting still for hours. We are
learning about how unhealthy it is that the Dutch— the sitting champions of Europe— are so inactive.
Things need to change and it starts young.”
Taking risks is children's nature. Babies start to pull themselves up on furniture even before they can
stand.Older children are introduced to a large range of activities that come with potential risk like working
with tools.
“Risky play is really a fundamental way for children to figure out the world,” says Mariana
Brussoni, a professor at the University of British Columbia. “Engaging in risky play helps them to
develop self-confidence,resilience, executive functioning abilities, as well as risk assessment.”
While it is still parents’ job to keep kids safe in playgrounds, it is important to make informed
choices before prohibiting risky play. That's why parents should practice what Brussoni calls the 17-second
rule. So instead of telling your child not to climb a tree so high or run so fast, take 17 seconds and
observe
how your child is doing and what they are able to do.
“This will provide your children the opportunity to figure out for themselves what's comfortable and
what they can do,” says Brussoni, adding that the most important thing you can do is get out of the way
and just let children play.
28. What are the current playgrounds like?
A. They are challenging for kids. B. They are basically free of risks.
C. They are full of funny elements. D. They are tailored to risk-takers' nature.
29. Why does Rob Hofland want to bring back risk play?
A. To motivate children to become more active. B. To obey the latest health guidelines in Europe.C. To train potential champions in the sports field. D. To inspire children to invent smarter devices.
30. What does Brussoni stress in paragraph 5?
A. Requirements for tackling risks. B. Features of predictable risks.
C. Ways to engage in risky play. D. Benefits risky play can bring.
31. What does Brussoni advise parents to do?
A. Stop observing their adventurous kids.B. Act as a role model for less brave kids.
C. Allow their kids to explore their potential.D. Prevent their kids from doing risky sports.

In the history of life on Earth, organisms have relied on the light of the sun, the moon and stars to
find their way and schedule their lives. While the emergence of electric lighting in the late 19th century
may have been a boon to humans, it has done much harm to the natural world. Among the negative
impacts of artificial light at night(ALAN), light pollution leads migrating birds to cities with terrible
consequences, contributes to the alarming decline in insect populations, and convinces sea turtles to climb
away from the water instead of towards it.
Now, a new study from the University of Plymouth adds another finding about how ALAN is affecting
coral reefs(珊瑚礁): Light pollution from coastal cities can trick them into spawning(产卵) outside of the
appropriate times when they would normally reproduce.
Using a combination of light pollution data and spawning observations, researchers are able to show for
the first time that corals exposed to ALAN are spawning one to three days earlier and closer to the full
moon compared to those on unlighted reefs.
Corals release eggs on certain nights of the year, guided by lunar cycles. If corals are spawning on
different nights, inspired to do so by the confusion of light pollution, it could reduce the likelihood of
coral eggs being fertilized and surviving to produce new adult corals that help reefs to recover.
“Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse and economically important ecosystems on the planet.
Mass bleaching(白化) events caused by climate change, habitat destruction, fisheries, water pollution and
other disturbances have reduced coral reefs substantially since the 1950s,” these worried researchers write.
“The complete loss of corals is anticipated over the next 100 years.”
“If we want to reduce the harm ALAN is causing, we can delay switching on night-time lighting in
coastal regions to ensure the natural dark period between sunset and moonrise that guides spawning remains
complete,”says lead author Dr. Thomas Davies.
Obviously, light pollution is one of the least complicated pollution sources to fix. Solving plastic
pollution and greenhouse gas emissions will take a humanity-wide sea change to fix, but light pollution?
We just need to turn off the lights when necessary. That can make a significant difference to the natural
world.
32. What does the underlined word“boon” in paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Blessing. B. Demonstration. C. Trend. D. Crisis.
33. How does ALAN affect corals?
A. It blinds new adult corals. B. It misleads them into spawning.
C. It keeps them from reproducing. D. It encourages coral egg hunting.
34. Why do the researchers feel worried?
A. Corals are exposed to moonlight. B. Corals are likely to become extinct.
C. Corals have lost their ecological value. D. Corals cause disturbances to fisheries.
35. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To analyze the impact of human activity.B. To emphasize the significant role of corals.
C. To reveal the root sources of corals’ decline.D. To call for action to reduce light pollution.

Lucy touched the tiny gray whiskers(胡须) on a plastic mouse and her fingers were trembling with
excitement. “Ms. Thompson will think it's real!” she whispered to Mia, recalling how their art teacher
had nearly dropped her coffee last month when a mouse ran across the schoolyard.
Mia adjusted a mouse's tail, saying, “But, what if she gets too scared?”
“Relax!” said Lucy. “It's for April Fools’ Day! She laughed when we drew cat ears on her hat
last week.This is just funnier!”
On April Fools’ Day, Lucy and Mia carefully placed some plastic mice under Ms. Thompson’ s
sketchbook(素描册)in the art room before Ms. Thompson entered for a class. The girls were looking
forward
to witnessing the funny moment when Ms. Thompson saw the surprise. Soon Ms. Thompson stepped into
the art room and greeted the students cheerfully. The two girls got excited and their eyes kept track of
Ms. Thompson until she reached out for her sketchbook. The two girls looked at each other, waiting to
together shout out“April Fools!”.
The scream filled the art room the moment Ms. Thompson spotted the plastic mice. Before the girls
shouted, they saw Ms. Thompson standing frozen with a pale-face. Other students burst into laughter but
soon kept silent when they noticed their teacher's shaking hands. A boy student rushed to pick up the
plastic mice and throw them away.
Lucy's stomach dropped. That wasn't the playful reaction they'd expected. Ms. Thompson kept
cleaning her glasses nervously and her cheerful voice was reduced to whispers. When Ms. Thompson
dismissed
the class early, leaving her sketchbook open, Lucy and Mia exchanged guilty glances(瞥).
During lunch break, Mia and Lucy had a talk. “We went too far,” Mia said. Lucy nodded with
guilt. “We have to do something!” Mia said firmly. Lucy agreed, but she didn't know what to do.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
An idea struck Lucy as she saw cat drawings in Ms. Thompson's sketchbook

(Text 2)
M: Do you have any pets?

when getting close to one.(Text 3)
M: Can we have pasta or pizza for dinner? I'm not in the mood for chicken again.
W: Not today. I'm too pressed for time all day to prepare two meals. Tomorrow the choice is yours.
M: Alright. It' ll be pizza tomorrow.
(Text 4)
M: I' ve forgotten how tiring house hunting is. We must have viewed at least a dozen places last week.
W: We' ll find somewhere soon. I'm tired of renting and moving house frequently. I have enough
patience to keep looking and find the perfect place to raise a family.
(Text 5)
M: I'm so nervous about this job interview tomorrow. Do you have any advice?
W: Sure. Just relax. Don't regard it as an interview. Instead, think about it as a nice, friendly chat with
an old friend who wants to know about your life now.
(Text 6)
M: Have you seen the library's events calendar? They have some look club events, plus they are hosting a
science fiction writing workshop next month.
W: No, I haven't seen it, but that workshop sounds like something I would like to visit.
M: I know. You' ve already started writing a few short stories, right?
W: Yes, but I would like to write more and longer stories. I would love to make a career of writing

M: An author whose first novel won a highly regarded award ed award last year.
W: I will definitely sign up then. Thanks for letting me know!
(Text 7)
M: I cannot believe how bad this game has been.
W: I know. It's like they have forgotten how to play as a team.
M: I think it's because of this new player.
W: What do you mean?
M: He is just taking the ball and not passing it. He keeps trying to score a goal, only to give the ball
away.
W: He has come pretty close a couple of times.
M: If they were working as a football team, the score would be 3—0 by now. Instead, neither side has
scored.
W: It has been pretty dull.
M: The manager needs to make some changes soon. There is only 10 minutes left.
W: Looks like you' re getting your wish! He's making a change and bringing on another forward!
(Text 8)
M: I can't believe the day is finally here.
W: I know. It feels like we' ve been watching this bridge getting built for a long time.
M: I'm amazed they managed to do all that work in six months.
W: If we hadn't gotten this job, we would never have had such an amazing view from the office.
M: I know. Being this high up in the office building is like being at the top of a mountain looking down.W: When will the bridge be open to the public?
M: They are having an opening ceremony this weekend. They have invited a famous film star to open it.
W: They should have got someone with a local connection who will understand how significant this bridge
is.
M: Yes. It is uniting two cities that were previously an hour's drive away.
W: I wonder if the two cities will eventually become one.
M: Unlikely. Each has its own culture and sense of identity.
W: I guess you' re right.
(Text 9)
M: Good afternoon, Anna. Have you heard about the new technology conference happening next month?
There are so many exciting topics on the agenda this year.
W: Yes, I'm planning to attend.
M: Me, too! I'm particularly interested in the session on artificial intelligence and its future uses.
W: AI is quickly changing many industries and our daily lives in ways we couldn't have imagined a few
years ago.
M: Absolutely. We have to stay updated with the latest advancements like virtual reality to keep
competitive in our fields.
W: I agree. Let's go into the hall together and exchange notes afterward. I'm also very interested in the
robotics session.
M: Robotics has amazed me since I was a kid. They are making robots more human-like every day,
which will also change many sectors.
W: I read that AI is used in health care now, improving patient care and catching illnesses earlier. This
can definitely be a great help for our work.
M: That's incredible! This will be a great opportunity to learn more about all this and how we can apply
them in our work.
W: I'm looking forward to it. It will bx both informative and inspiring.
(Text 10)
W: Hello, everyone, welcome! I' ve only started this channel this week, so I'm sort of nervous in front
of the camera. Anyway, I want to share with you everything I know about health. Today I want to talk
to you about how to feel younger. I am in my mid-40s, yetI feel as energetic as I did when I was
18. So what is my secret? It's not really a secret; it's a combination of exercise, healthy eating and
rest. Sleep is the most important aspect of all oi this. I imagine many of you get around six hours of
sleep a night. You might stay up late watching TV, playing video games, or just browsing your
phone. What I'd suggest is setting an alarm an hour before you go to bed. That alarm is to remind
you to
stop looking at electronic screens. They produce blue light, which can prevent you from going to sleep.
I would also suggest not eatıng or drinking anything two hours before bedtime. If you are restless, a

One possible version:Dear Alan ,
I'm writing to tell you an exciting event I attended last Friday— the annual Eriglish Singing
Competition held at our school. About20 contestants from different grades participated, each showcasing
their unique voices. The crowd cheered wildly, and the judges provided encouraging feedback, highlighting
both vocal skills and emotional expression.
What impressed me most was Lily's performance of You Raise Me Up, a well-known English song.
Her soft yet powerful voice with emotions filled the competition hall and reminded me of my parents’
love for me.
How I wish you'd been there! Let me know about your school events!
Yours ,

done. Those mice have been eaten by the cat. That's a punishment for them. Punish us if you' re still
angry. From Lucy and Mia.” After school, the two girls put the lovely plastic cat and the note beside
Ms. Thompson's sketchbook.
