There are so many amazing cultures around the world, each having their own unique set of traditions. In this
post, we will explore four interesting cultural traditions around the world.
Giving cinnamon (肉桂) in Denmark
In the western part of Denmark, if a person is not yet married by the time they reach their 25th birthday, they
will be restrained by their friends and have cinnamon thrown on them in the New Year’s Eve. The unique tradition
can be translated to “giving cinnamon”.
The Festival of Light in Thailand
The Festival of Light, also called “Loy Krathong”, is on the evening of the full moon on the 12th month of theThai lunar calendar. The maker of the krathong attaches a candle to the handcrafted flower arrangement, which will
be floating down riverways to pray for financial luck and happiness in the coming year.
Wife-carrying Competition in Finland
More of a competitive sport than it is a tradition, a Wife-carrying Competition in Finland. Athletes participate
in a race where a male competitor carries a female competitor through an obstacle course. The winners are the
fastest team, which will be awarded an interesting bonus — the wife’s weight in beer.
Baking money into food in Bolivia
While many people anticipate watching fireworks and tasting delicious dishes on the New Year’s Eve,
Bolivians bake money into sugary dessert such as cakes. The lucky person receiving the monetary surprise can look
forward to enjoying a prosperous year.

Ricky lived in a lovely, futuristic house, which had everything you could ever want. Though he didn’t help
much around the house, Ricky was still very pleased when his parents bought him the latest model of robot. As
soon as it arrived, off it went, cooking, cleaning, ironing, and—most importantly—gathering up clothes from
Ricky’s bedroom floor. On that first day, when Ricky went to sleep, he had left his bedroom in a truly disastrous
state. When he woke up the next morning, everything was perfectly clean and tidy.
In fact, it was actually “too” clean; now Ricky couldn’t find his favorite T-shirt, nor his favorite toy. However
much he searched, the two things did not reappear. The same was starting to happen with other things. Ricky began
to suspect the robot. He planned to spy on the robot, and began following it around the house. Finally he caught it
on the spot, picking up one of Ricky’s toys to hide it.
Ricky told his parents that the robot was broken and badly programmed and asked them to have it changed. But his parents told him absolutely not; they were delighted with the new robot, and it cooked like a dream.
One day, the robot was whirring past, and heard the boy’s complaints. The robot returned with one of the boy’s
toys, and some clothes for him.
“Here, sir. I did not know it was bothering you, ” said the robot.
“How could it not, you thief! You’ve been stealing my belongings for weeks!” the boy answered angrily.
“The objects were left on the floor. I therefore calculated that you did not like them. I am programmed to
collect all that is not wanted, and at night I send it to people who can use it. I am a maximum efficiency machine.
Were you unaware?” the robot said, with a certain pride.
Ricky started feeling ashamed. He understood that the robot was neither broken nor misprogrammed. Rather,
it had been programmed extremely well!
Since then, Ricky has decided to become a “Maximum Efficiency Boy”, and put real care into how he treated
his things. He kept them tidy, and made sure he didn’t have more than what was necessary. And, often, he would
buy things, and take them along with his good friend, the robot, to help out those other people who needed them.
24.What is the robot meant to do?
A.Do the housework. B.Take care of children.
C.Provide security services. D.Recycle used objects.
25.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean?
A.The robot dreamed of being a cook. B.The robot was good at cooking.
C.The robot could serve as a cooker. D.The robot found it unrealistic to cook.
26.Why did Ricky get mad at the robot?
A.He mistook it as a thief. B.He disliked the way it cleaned his room.
C.He thought it was making too much noise. D.He felt less loved by his parents since its arrival.
27.Where does the text probably come from?
A.A science report. B.A science fiction story.
C.An entertainment magazine. D.A commercial advertisement.

If your boss yells, blames you, and then takes the credit for your work—even it is a rare incident—it can have
a bad effect on your well-being and performance at the workplace.
“Thankfully, abusive leadership isn’t too common, but when it happens it leaves employees far less likely to
take the initiative and work to improve business practices,” said Howie Xu, an author of a new study carried out by
an international group of researchers. “We wanted to understand the cogmitive factors behind that effect—and findout how companies can protect their employees from the negative impact of bad bosses.”
Xu’s team surveyed employees and supervisors from 42 different South Korean companies, along with
hundreds of US students, to explore the ways in which abusive supervision impacts“taking charge”behavior by
employees. Subjects were then ranked according to whether they actively seek positive opportunities for promotion
and advancement or take a more preventative approach that prioritizes safety and job security.
“We theorized that both the drive to obtain rewards (promotion, bonuses) and the drive to avoid punishments
(maintain job security) would shape the way employees respond to abusive bosses,” Xu explained. But that’ s not
what Xu and his team found. Rather, they found that employees who prioritized career advancement were strongly
affected by abusive leadership while employees who prioritized job security remained just as likely to take charge
after experiencing abusive leadership.
One possible explanation, Xu said, is that ambitious employees may think an abusive boss has direct control
over whether they will receive bonuses or opportunities for promotion. By contrast, bad bosses may be seen as
having less direct control over fring decisions, which often require ratification (批准) by HR teams or more senior
managers.
That’s an important finding, because it suggests that organizations seeking to lessen the impact of bad
leadership should focus on giving power to employees and making them feel valued and appreciated, rather than
simply apologizing and making them feel sure that their jobs are safe.
28.What do Howio Xu’s words in paragraph 2 suggest?
A.It’s urgent for companies to replace their bad bosses.
B.Companies should perfect their staff evaluation system.
C.Becoming a victim of abusive leadership is very normal.
D.Abusive leadership lowers employees’ work enthusiasm.
29.What conclusion can be drawn from paragraph 4?
A.The finding had a solid theory foundation.
B.The finding was beyond the study team’s expectations.
C.Employees tend to put potential rewards before everything else.
D.Employees generally hold an unfriendly attitude toward abusive bosses.
30.What should organizations primarily do if the employees were abused?
A.Give them suitable recognition. B.Guarantee them job security.
C.Seek help from professionals. D.Make a sincere apology to them.
31.What is the best title for the text?A.It’s Possible to Keep a Bad Boss at Bay
B.It’ s Important to Avoid Becoming a Bad Boss
C.Having a Bad Boss May Make You a Worse Employee
D.Having Bad HR Teams Keeps You Away from Job Satisfaction

Reducing food waste is easy — just ask the students at a school in Wood bridge, America, who have become
experts at sorting their lunchtime trash (垃圾). Since the fall of 2019, they have actively participated in a successful
food-waste diversion program that not only saves money but also contributes to reducing the amount of trash that
heads to landfills.
Actually, this program plays a crucial role in facing up to the challenges of climate change. By reducing food
waste, the school minimizes the amount of trash sent to landfills, thereby reducing harmful methane emissions (沼
气排放). The school’s program is making a significant impact. Each month, it moves over 1,300 pounds of food
waste, resulting in an estimated reduction of 772 pounds in CO, emissions and the production of 180 kilowatt-hours
of energy, according to Blue Earth Compost in America.
At school, when students are done eating lunch, they head to an appointed section — a row of desks, garbage
cans and containers — where they sort their trash. Leftover liquids, such as juice or milk, are emptied into a big
basin on the floor. The juice containers and plastic water bottles are placed into another container to recycle.
Additionally, prepackaged, unopened snacks such as bags of carrots as well as produce such as apples and bananas
are “rescued” and placed into a big basket with a handwritten “Donations” sign taped to it to send to the town’s
senior center.
The benefits extend beyond environmental awareness. The program reduces trash-carrying costs as less weight
goes into the trash bins, making it easier for cleaners to manage. The students also find this planet-friendly practice
enjoyable and meaningful, considering it a small game that contributes to a bigger cause. This initiative proves that
collective efforts, even on a smaller scale, can lead to significant changes, not only in waste reduction but also in
educating a generation committed to preserving our planet.
32.What does the food-waste reduction program focus on at the school in Wood bridge?
A.Saving school food.
B.Donating unopened snacks.
C.Fertilizing the school’s garden.
D.Minimizing harmful gases emissions.
33.What is the impact of reducing methane emissions according to the text?A.It leads to food cost reducing.
B.It helps with energy production.
C.It improves waste management.
D.It addresses climate change effectively.
34.What does the underlined word “rescued” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Saved. B.Frozen. C.Abandoned. D.Repurposed
35.What message does the text convey about the program?
A.It is costly but highly effective.
B.It is easy to perform and cost-saving.
C.It is expensive and difficult to apply.
D.It is only accessible in large companies.

The Importance of Being Independent
The ability to be independent is something not everyone possesses. 36 And learning to support
yourself is fundamental for any success you ever hope to achieve. At the end of the day, you only have yourself to
fall back on, so it’s very important to be able to handle things on your own.
People rely on others far more than it is necessary. People put their happiness in the hands of a significant
person, thinking this will bring them satisfaction. 37
Should you always be dependent on someone else? Of course not. 38 Therefore, you need to learn
how to make decisions on your own. People are unable to be independent for a variety of reasons, with fear being
the biggest: the fear of being alone, the fear of rejection and the fear of the future.
However, there is no reason to base your life decisions on relationships with people. All relationships end at
some point or another. 39 The only thing you can do is alter your understanding of relationships. Instead of
expecting them to make you happy by being in your life and providing enjoyment, appreciate the time spent and
enjoyment since you know it will be gone.
40 Don’ t ask for advice , do what you want and learn from your own mistakes. Many people are afraid
to think for themselves because that involves taking responsibility for their own lives. This is just one way people
become dependent. We are born alone and we die alone, so we each have to take responsibility for our lives at
every step along the way.
A.There is nothing you can do to change or affect that.B.This is a serious error too many people make these days.
C.Make decisions by and for yourself, whatever they may be.
D.You can control your own life by making your own choices.
E.However, you need to be independent in order to survive in the world.
F.In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is wait for the right time.
G.Not only are you limiting yourself, you are also likely to become a burden to this person.

day, too preoccupied with chores. Life’s gifts are 53 — but we always pay no attention to them.
Never too busy for the wonder and the awe of life. Embrace each hour, 54 each golden minute.

The end of the year had finally arrived. The first year of my teaching career would be over in a matter of days,
but I hated Awards Day. Although I had a class of outstanding students, I feared one student wouldn’t have an
award.
Brent just didn’t have the high averages as some of his classmates. As I sat down and began looking over my
grade book, I filled in the blanks on the award sheet for the highest grade in each subject. Then, I proceeded to “A
Honor Roll” and on through the list. When I began checking averages for the “AB Honor Roll”, I knew Brent
hadn’t made it yet now. But while the first honor roll was determined by the average of all grades of the first three
months, the yearly honor roll was the average of the final grade in each class for the whole year. Maybe there was a
chance.Brent’s grades may have been considered average, but he was far from it. He was no quitter. That boy was
very persistent. If he failed a spelling test midweek, by Friday, he would pass. If his math grade slipped a bit, he’d
work to get it higher. Unlike the other students who would often attempt to “one up” one another, Brent’s only
competitor was himself, and his goal for the entire year was the AB Honor Roll.
With each report card, his face had fallen when he had missed that elusive (难以达到的) B average, and
although he had never made any honor roll, he had never stopped trying to reach that goal. Now, he had one last
opportunity. I entered his final grades into the computer and averaged. It was a B! I checked again. Yes, it was a
