In the tenth grade, my peers gave me a nickname that stuck until graduation: “Dictionary.” It all started the day my
teacher announced a national spelling bee competition.
Determined to win, I opened my dictionary to learn how to spell every word in English. In a 1 attempt to
memorize the most words possible, I began reading day and night.
During the competition, I misspelled one word. The pain over this defeat was so great that — to this day — I
still 2 the word: “graffiti.” However, not succeeding in something I invested so much effort in only 3

kids in poverty 4 to an education.

In my senior-year literature class last term, I encountered a knight who defended a forgotten kingdom, a gentle
grandmother who healed wounds with folk tales, and a futuristic explorer who vanished in a black hole. Once, I often
found myself amazed at how my students, who brought these figures to life, grasped the essence of complex literary
themes.
But the situation was quite different with their first assignment, which centered on the question: “Why is literature
important?”
Most of the essays were barely a page long, and scarcely any had a sentence that could serve as a strong thesis
statement. I was taken aback. Then it dawned on me that the problem lay in the question itself. They could have written
volumes about the allure of social media, but literature, in its pure form, just didn’t seem significant to them. This had
to change.
4 / 10As a new semester began, I asked everyone to craft a reflective essay on a literary work that had touched their soul.
This time, they found the task far more engaging. For the subsequent two tasks, a drama-analysis project was followed
by a poetry-creation workshop. I only stipulated that each piece should convey a deep-seated emotion. The outcomes
were astounding. The students delved into a wide range of literary works and produced essays and poems, each 8 to 15
pages long, with insights that broadened my perspective and stirred my emotions.
I entered the class believing that literature is important as a mirror of humanity. However, my students
demonstrated something even more profound. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a year’s worth of
memories filled with the realization of literature’s most profound significance — the ability to awaken dormant
feelings, to transport us to unseen worlds, and to reveal the shared threads of our human experiences.

A.Senior-year students. B.The author’s relatives.

A.Confusing. B.Impressive. C.Ordinary. D.Frightening.
27.What does the author’s experience illustrate?
A.Literature can awaken deep-seated human emotions.
B.Teaching literature is an easy task.
C.Students prefer creative writing to theoretical essays.
D.Classic literature is losing its appeal.

While saying “no” can be liberating to some, for others it can be uncomfortable. Sometimes, society teaches us the
word “no” is impolite. We feel more obligated (有义务的) to get along with things we honestly do not want to do in
order to be socially accepted.
Yet, there are clear benefits to the word “no”. One of the first steps is to find a way to say “no” that feels natural
and authentic for you. Perhaps you may find the “sandwich method” helpful. It is an approach that involves
sandwiching something that individuals may consider negative between two positives. Tell the person something
5 / 10positive followed by the “no” and end with something positive.
It’s also important to keep in mind that saying “no” to something but giving other options that better fit your needs
can also be an effective way to use the power of “no”. Remember that your needs are important and your decisions can
directly affect your time and energy.
We all have various roles in our work, parenting, social obligations, and family dynamics. These roles can
challenge our abilities to set boundaries. Learning about yourself and finding your inner power is crucial to your health
and well-being. Boundaries can be flexible when appropriate. Take time to reassess your boundaries, taking into
account the pros and cons. And remember: Boundaries do not have to be permanent.
Standing firm in your decisions and being able to express yourself can be so rewarding, but there are also some
signs to keep in mind when it is not being used in a way to empower. Withdrawal, loss of interest in activities, or
having feelings of worthlessness can be more than indicative of saying “no”. If you find yourself saying “no” in a way
that leads to isolation, then it might be time to see a mental health professional.
Overall, there isn’t a “right” way to say “no”. You will never be able to please everyone. Remember to let your
inner confidence shine in your ability to say “no”.
28.What does society think of saying “no”?
A.Understandable. B.Inconsiderate. C.Necessary. D.Indifferent.
29.How can we employ the “sandwich method”?
A.By avoiding anything negative. B.By looking on the positive side.
C.By being supportive before and after rejection. D.By setting permanent boundaries in daily life.
30.What does the author suggest people do regarding saying “no”?
A.Stick to their own decisions. B.Express themselves flexibly.
C.Prioritize others’ needs. D.Ignore its negative effects.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.How to satisfy others’ needs. B.How to take care of oneself.
C.The journey of self-discovery. D.The power of a gentle refusal.
D
Studying a subject that you feel pointless is never a fun or easy task. If you’re studying history, asking yourself the
question “why is history important” is a very good first step. History is an essential part of human civilization. You will
find something here that will arouse your interest, or get you thinking about the significance of history.
6 / 10History grounds us in our roots. History is an important and interesting field of study, and learning the history of
our home country can give us a deeper, more meaningful glimpse (一瞥) into our ancestral pasts, and how we got to
where we are today. Many people feel like they need a sense of cultural belonging, which is something that studying
your roots and being open-minded to the evolution (演变) of your culture can provide.
History enriches our experience. Reading history is an amazing experience because it enables us to reflect on the
social and economic life of the people living long time ago. According to the experts, problems faced by people
regardless of the past and present are the same. With the information about the ancestors, one can become more
experienced in handling challenges of life.
History makes us more empathetic (具有共情能力的). Studying history can give us insight (洞察力) into why our
culture does certain things, and how the past has shaped it into what we know now. It also provides a rather strong
foundation for empathy across cultures. Fear and hate for others is usually caused by ignorance (无知). We’re scared of
the things that we don’t understand. History has the potential to break down those boundaries by offering us insight into
entire worlds that would otherwise be foreign to us.
History can inspire us to learn more. What’s fantastic about history is the way it broadens our horizons. It’s almost
impossible to learn about one historical period without having dozens of questions about related concepts. Study the
19th century England, and you might catch a glimpse of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. Look up Charles Dickens, and
you might learn a thing or two about realism. Or maybe you end up switching your attention away from novels, and
discover the history of romantic poets in England. It can go anywhere, and there is something in there for absolutely
anybody.
The value of history cannot be underestimated. We don’t have to live in the past, but we can definitely do better by
learning from it and using the lessons learnt to lead more meaningful lives.
32.People can get a sense of cultural belonging by studying history and _______.
A.thinking about the meaning of it
B.accepting the development of culture
C.analyzing how they get to the present state
D.reflecting on their social and economic life
33.What can be concluded from Paragraph 4?
A.It is difficult to get rid of cultural barriers.
B.People are willing to accept foreign cultures.
C.Cultural conflicts in history are difficult to ignore.
7 / 10D.History helps us improve our cross-cultural awareness.
34.What could be the best title for the passage?
A.How to Build Cultural Identity B.Why Studying History Matters
C.Know the Past, Know the Present D.History: a Way to Broaden Horizons
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,共 10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选
项。
Over the last decade, STEM-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math-has become increasingly defined as the
symbol of development, success, and progress. Incoming college students are increasingly choosing majors like
computer science, biology, and engineering, even if some of them are not particularly interested in those subjects.
35 However, this has subsequently left liberal arts and the importance of the field behind.
36 To answer the question, we need to consider what liberal arts are. Different from STEM, liberal arts
are essentially the broad study of how the world works, assisting with students’ critical thinking, creative application,
and social skills, ranging from topics like psychology and sociology to linguistics and history.
Although today STEM-based education seems to be the most effective path to take for career prospects, liberal arts
can produce just as much success. This is mainly due to the fact that a liberal arts education teaches students important
soft, social skills, including clear and effective communication, error-free writing, problem-solving, and successful data
analysis, among others. 37 Without them, how can a student properly prepare themselves for a career?
In addition, students in liberal arts possess the most important characteristic of being more human. What they learn
brings them distinctive social insights. 38 It not only translates into more humanized employees in the future
workforce but also provides a significant positive effect, too. As much as AI has taken the world by storm, it does not
take away from the fact that when someone calls customer service, they want to hear a human voice. They want
someone who can considerately help them solve their problems on a more emotional level rather than just being
assisted by a robot that follows a program.
As society continues to evolve, and people’s needs and wants continue to change, merely sticking to practical,
baseline solutions will not work. That’s exactly where liberal arts come in. 39 And that’s the beauty and
importance of liberal arts.
A.Why are students today seeking towards the field?
B.Do liberal arts still matter in a STEM-driven world?
C.These skills are what a good employee should have.
8 / 10D.Anyway, it seems like the “right” thing to do for their future.
E.This nature generally can’t come from STEM-based education.
F.That’s why both liberal arts and STEM are important for a progressive society.
G.AI will never be able to truly understand humanity as an actual human mind can.
第三部分 书面表达 (共两节,32 分)
第一节 (共 4 小题;第 40、41 题各 2 分,第 42 题 3 分,第 43 题 5 分,共 12 分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
At the start of nearly every doctor's visit, chances are that you will be asked to get your weight measured for that
day's exam record - and you would be hard-pressed to find a person whose physician has not brought up his or her
weight at some point, and doctors' recommendations to drop pounds are still extremely common. But many
conversations around weight have become a barrier, not a help, in the campaign to make people healthier.
Higher body masses are associated with increased risk for hypertension, diabetes and coronary disease. Many
studies have shown that heavier people are at higher risk for these illnesses. But the big picture is not the whole picture.
Researchers have identified a smaller group of overweight people considered to be ''metabolically (新 陈 代 谢 地 )
healthy'' - meaning they do not exhibit high blood pressure or other diseases.
Research over the past two decades has shown that health professionals have negative attitudes toward fat people.
Some refuse to see these patients at all, as the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported in 2011. Such practices keep people
from regular annual exams and prevent the finding of serious underlying conditions. Not only that but doctors'
appointments with fat patients are shorter on average, and they routinely use negative words in their medical histories
of such people. And research suggests that the stress of being a heavy person may cause metabolic changes that may
lead to more poor health outcomes.
To achieve better health outcomes, doctors should focus on behaviors that have proven positive outcomes for
health instead of the weight-centric health care practice. And people of all sizes are entitled to evidence-based factors
that empower them and keep them healthy. Lifestyle changes, such as eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains, along
with increased physical activity, can improve blood pressure, levels and sensitivity - often independently of changes in
body weight.
40.What will you be asked to do when visiting a doctor for the first time? (不多于 4 个单词)
41.Why does the stress of being a heavy person may lead to more poor health outcomes? (不多于 6 个单词)
9 / 1042.What are doctors expected to do to achieve better health outcomes? (不多于 10 个单词)
43.What is the passage mainly about? (不多于 4 个单词)
