As a young girl Ayshah grew up fascinated by the world of beauty.
She had a hole in her heart — a medical condition she was born with. Ayshah’s mother was especially protective of
her because of her health condition, but encouraged her to pursue her dreams. When Ayshah finished high school, the
most appealing option at her local technical college was training to become a make-up artist. So, she signed up for
the three-year course.
,
While studying Ayshah suffered the loss of her mother, which led the 21-year-old to become the primary

that moment on, I knew I had to turn from being dependent to becoming stronger,” she says.
In three years, Ayshah completed her course at the technical college, along with her training. Then a friend told
her about the opening of Roseyar, an Aramco initiative that supports local women by training and employing them at
the rose factory in Taif, where she lives.
Taif is the heart of the rose-growing industry in western Saudi Arabia. Known as the Taif rose, these flowers are
prized for their intense smell and are used by the world’s leading perfume makers. With nearly 900 rose farms, Taif
has a centuries-old tradition of rose growing, and the roses are harvested to produce some of the world’s most
expensive rose oil.
Ayshah joined Roseyar and trained as a production technician, using the oil of Taif roses to make cosmetic
products. She reconnected with the cosmetic industry she loved as a child. “I truly love knowing that I am contributing
to making something so beautiful,” she says.
The job at Roseyar has enabled Ayshah to meet her various responsibilities while being surrounded by the sweet
smell of the Taif rose. “I’ve been able to balance having my medical treatment for my heart condition, supporting my
family financially and providing for myself — I was even able to buy a car,” she says.
4. Why did Ayshah study at her local technical college?
A. She had health problems. B. She had to look after her father.
C. She was able to learn what she loves. D. She was eager to earn a high income in the future.
5. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. The Roseyar project. B. The Taif rose industry.
.
C The production of perfumes. D. The characteristics of Taif roses.
6. Which of the following best describes Ayshah?
A. Ambitious and responsible. B. Talented and determined.
C. Reliable and generous. D. Devoted and modest.
7. What does Ayshah think of her being part of Roseyar?
A. It’s rewarding. B. It’s demanding.
C. It’s a stepping stone to her dream. D. It opens up new opportunities for her.

Writing out the same word again and again may bring back bad memories for some, but handwriting can boost
connectivity across brain regions, some of which are involved in learning and memory, a new study shows.
In the study, psychologists Audrey and Ruud, both at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology,
stuck electrodes (电极) on the participants’ heads. They asked the participants to type out or hand write with a
第5页/共12页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司digital pen words that appeared on a computer screen. Sensors in a cap recorded electrical brain activity. Then the
psychologists looked for when two brain areas are active with the same frequency of electrical waves at the same
time. This result can reveal the connectivity among different regions across the brain.
With handwriting, the researchers saw increased activity, specifically in low frequency bands, not only in the
expected motor areas but also in others associated with learning. These low frequency bands have previously been
shown to support memory processes. When the team compared the two tasks, they realized that handwriting —but
not typing —increased the connectivity across parietal (顶叶) brain regions, which are involved in sensory and
motor processing, and central regions, many of which are involved in memory.
“Even when the movements are very similar, the activation seems much, much higher in handwriting,” Audrey
says. “It shows that there’s more involvement of these brain regions when you’re handwriting, which might give
you some specific advantages.”
These findings suggest that there are distinct processes of brain activation happening while a person types or
writes. This boost of stimulation of handwriting facilitates learning because these particular waves between these
areas are involved in memory formation and encoding (编码) .
And although handwriting may help with learning processes, typing is often easier, faster and more practical.
“Students and teachers alike should therefore consider the task at hand to decide to hand write or type,” Audrey
says. Despite the need for more studies to determine the best learning strategy, experts say that handwriting
shouldn’t be left behind in the digital age. “Schools need to bring in more writing into curriculum design,” Ruud
says.
8. What did Audrey and Ruud mainly do in their research?
A. They tested the function of electrodes. B. They analyzed the brain structure.
C. They monitored the brain activities. D. They recorded the writing speed.
9. Why can handwriting improve learning more than typing?
A. It involves more specific brain activation. B. It promotes better muscle memory.
C. It allows for more innovative thinking. D. It encourages better concentration.
10. What’s the author’s attitude toward typing?
A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
11. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Taking Notes by Hand is Becoming Uncommon in Class
B. Using Keyboard is Recommended Due to Its Convenience
C. Widespread Brain Connectivity is Crucial to Human Learning
D. Handwriting Boosts Brain Connections More Than Typing Does

In 2009, Amy Rose and Alice Ferguson, two mothers living in Bristol, ran an experiment. They applied to shut
a quarter-mile road to traffic for two hours after school — just to let the children who lived there play. They didn’t
prepare games or activities to see what would happen to the children with time, space, and permission.
The results were breathtaking. The dozens of kids who showed up had no problem finding things to do: One
little girl cycled up and down the street “3,000 times,” Rose recalled. “She was blissed out.” Suddenly, the modern
approach to children’s play, in which parents transport their kids to playgrounds or other activities, seemed both
needlessly extravagant (奢侈的) and wholly insufficient. Kids didn’t need special equipment or lessons; they just
needed to get outside and be less reliant on their parents, who were trapped by the daily routine with children.
Nowadays, streets, where people used to sell goods and socialize, are commonly thought to serve only mobile
purposes. After industrialization, streets were the primary location for children to play. Only when cars hit the streets
in large numbers did society begin prioritizing the movement of motor vehicles over children and their playful
behavior.
In 2011, Rose, Ferguson, and their friend Ingrid Skeels founded Playing Out to help residents set up play sessions.
As with any other sort of play, the process takes work: getting support from neighbors, booking road closures in
advance, etc. Organizers are also working against the headwinds of a society unaccustomed to children playing in the
street. Some residents ask why the kids can’t just go to the park as they worry about the noise or what will happen to
their cars.
On busier roads, play sessions always rely on people available to organize formal closures, while in communities
where people lack the time and resources necessary for regular traffic closures, play streets don’t happen at all. But
this upsetting situation may be the ultimate finding of Rose and Ferguson’s work: Truly restoring a culture of street
play will require society to make much more far-reaching, permanent changes, which may sound upsetting but would
improve the well-being of children and parents.
12. What does the underlined part “blissed out” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Quite bored. B. Pretty confused.
C. Extremely happy. D. Terribly worn-out.
13. What historical transformation led to the decline of street play among children?
A. The rise of industrialization. B. The appearance of street markets.
C. The expansion of public parks. D. The increase in vehicles on streets.
14. Which of the following words can best describe Playing Out founders’ work?
A. Creative. B. Challenging. C. Fascinating. D. Effective.
第7页/共12页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司15. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Children’s playful behavior should be carefully controlled.
B. Every family should make efforts to help children play out.
C. Permanent changes should be made in how streets are used.
D. More parks should be built in working-class neighborhoods.

When faced with a big challenge, maybe you’ve heard this advice before: “Be more confident.” ___16___
Take the belief that you are valuable, worthwhile and capable, add in the optimism that comes when you are certain

Then where does confidence come from? There are several factors that affect confidence. Firstly, what you’re
born with, such as your genes. Secondly, how you’re treated. ___17___ And lastly, the part you have control over,
the choices you make, the risks you take, and how you think about and respond to challenges and setbacks. And, by
keeping in mind a few practical tips, we do actually have the power to cultivate our own confidence.
● Find a quick fix. ___18___ Picture your success when you’re beginning a difficult task. Do something as
simple as listening to music with deep bass. You can even strike a powerful pose or give yourself a pep talk (鼓舞
士气的话).
● ___19___ If you’re looking for a long-term change, consider the way you think about your abilities and
talents. If you think they are fixed at birth, you might give up, assuming you’ve discovered something you’re not
very good at. But if you have a growth mindset and think your abilities can improve, a challenge is an opportunity
to learn and grow.
● Practice failure. Face it. You’re going to fail sometimes. Studies show that those who fail regularly and
keep trying anyway are better equipped to respond to challenges and setbacks in a constructive way. ___20___ .

It was the tail end of the depression (大萧条), and things were tough. Mom had a hard time raising us kids on
her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake five years earlier — I
still remember it as if it were yesterday.
Looking back, I realize what Mom went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a
new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our soles were worn out. Constant moving was typical for my family
in these times. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but Mom couldn’t pay it. These were hard and sad years, but
we never complained.
Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five dollar Christmas fund for social assistance.
Mom said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent. She told us then there would be
nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mom, I had been selling Christmas trees to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. Boots
with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They had a price of twenty-three dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was very excited, as I hurried up the road to catch
the bus. It was only half a mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was
then that I realized that at our house, we had nothing for Christmas. I knew then that we would have no turkey or
ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.
Suddenly, I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots while Mom was
home in tears. She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents. I stopped. The bus drove off
without me, and I stood alone, but feeling as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I changed my mind and I
realized what I had to do.
