A father told his son that he should not accept the Theory of Evolution just because he leaned
about it in Biology class at school. He went on to say that he is teaching his son to think critically. But
heisn't.
Many people assume that critical thinking refers to questioning and criticizing in the more
negative sense of the word. If they are rejecting what they are told by experts, they falsely believe
that they are thinking critically. This is not uncommon. Many people claim that everything is just
someone’s opinion and no one is actually right or wrong. They believe they are thinking critically
whenthey’reactuallydoingtheveryopposite.
There are many definitions of critical thinking. To put simply,it refers to identifying and
evaluating arguments, finding inconsistencies in arguments, problem solving, and thinking about our
ownbeliefs and why we hold them.
Diane Halpern, author of Thought &Knowledge, uses this definition:“Critical thinkers are able
to change their mind or the conclusion that they reached, when new information warrants such a
change.”
学科网(北京)股份有限公司A closed-minded person responds negatively when presented with new ideas that challenge
their existing beliefs. These are the people who insist that even an expert's opinion is no better than
anyone else's.In contrast,an open-minded person suspends judgment. They seek out more
information, including information that goes against beliefs they currently hold. They review the
evidence that's available and are always open to new ways ofthinking. They consider all options and
insist on finding a solution.

28.Why does the author mention the father-son example in paragraph 1?
A.To promote the practice ofcritical thinking.
B.To criticize the current education system.
C.To present a widespread misconception.
D.To introduce an innovative idea.
29.What does the underlined word "warrants"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Justifies. B.Matches. C.Transforms. D.Identifies.
30.How are open-minded people different from the closed-minded?
A.They respect expert authority. B.They internalize their own beliefs.
C.Theykeepanoption-solutionbalance. D.They resist the urge tojudge prematurely.
31.What is the main idea ofthe last paragraph?
A.How to evaluate evidence. B.The process of critical thinking.
C.How to become a critical thinker. D.The benefits of being open-minded.

This might sound impossibly old-fashioned,but I still like the idea that education is about
learning:facts, skills, culture, analysis, inspiration. It's supposed to make us better citizens. But over
the last decade, the goal of learning has given way to grades and degrees. The unfortunate result has
beeninflation(膨胀)of both.They rise ever higher;learning doesn't.
To avoid discouraging students, some school districts did away with D and F grades.
Grade-point averages have consistently risen even though scores on nationwide standardized exams
such as SAT have not. It's not that I think standardized tests arc the final word n measuring
excellence. But when the gaps between grades and test scores are this wide and consistent, parents
and the public should notbe fooled.
That'struenotjustoflow-achievingstudents.Ina2023survey,educatorssaidthatclosetohalfofstudents
argueforhighergradesthantheyearn,and8of 10teachersgive in.It's hardto blamethem:A third or more
ofstudents andparents disturb them when they don't.
Unearned grades are damaging in many ways. Some students, armed with good grades, march
off to college to find themselves in remedial(补习的)classes because they haven't learned enough to take
college-level courses.Employers complain that high school and even college graduates lack basic
skills needed in the workforce. There are also complaints from college professors that the
students aren't even good at reading books.
Grade inflation has followed students into college. Some professors hesitate to grade accurately
because of student evaluations, which are often more negative for tough graders.Remember that
about 70%of college instructors are adjunct(兼职)professors who have few job protections. Many
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Ivy League students have learned to cherry-pick easy-grading professors.Yet a Brown University
study found that students taking courses from professors with stricter grading standards learned more.
We have to ask ourselves as a society:Do we want college to be a place of intellectual growth-or a
performative exercise in grade fishing?
32.What are parents fooled into thinking?
A.SAT is the best measure oftheir children's abilities.
B.The purpose ofeducation is to make better citizens.
C.Grade-point averages are vital for college application.
D.Children's high grades reflect their exceptional abilities.
33.What is a consequence ofgrade inflation?
A.Employers favor students with higher degrees.
B.Graduates fall short of employers'expectations.
C.Remedial classes become required courses in college.
D.Low-achieving students find it harder to enter college.
34.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Tough graders desirejob security.
B.Strict grading promotes real learning.
C.Student evaluations fuel intellectual growth.
D.Easy-grading professors start grade inflation.
35.What is the best title ofthe text?
A.The game of scores B.Today,Grade A is for average
C.The force behind grade inflation D.Now,learning takes the front seat

Visit a zoo,and you may love watching polar bears as they swim through a pool.Zoos can be
important places for polar bear research. 36 The more we can learn about how global
warming is affecting them, the better we can design conservation plans.
However, tracking them is tricky due to their wide-range movement. The main type oftracker has
been a radio collar, attached like a necklace around the bear's neck. This device sends location
information back to researchers. 37 It's not safe to put them on younger bears—as they
grow, the collar may get too tight. And male bears' heads are narrower than their necks,so the collars
slide right off.
An international team developed new tracking methods inspired by"burr(芒刺)on fur"idea. The
device stuck to the bears'fur, like burrs on your dog after a walk in the woods. 38 Theyfound
that in the warmer months, the animals hung out on land, moving little and conserving energy. As
temperatures dropped, they returned to the ice to hunt.
39 But it was invaluable to confirm it with reliable data.Additionally,it's always a
bonus to have one more way to track, understand—and hopefully help—these impressive white
mammals ofthe north.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司To aidpolarbears further,we must address the root cause:climate change. What can we do then?
Ride your bike to school instead of asking a parent to drive you.Unplug devices when they are
chargedto conserve energy.Turn offcomputers and lightswhenthey arenotinuse. 40
A.Little things can indeedhelp a lot.
B.Butneverunderestimatethe effect ofclimate change.

D.As sea ice declines, polarbears spendmoretime on shore.

It was 1975.I left school at 16 to work at the Tibooburra Pub,which had special significancefor
my family. The pub had first been run by my great-grandfather,Walter,back in 1913 and then he sold it.In
the late 1940s,my grandfather bought itback.Having spent so much time there as a kid,1 thought it was
a great place to work in.Grandfather's cheerful smile and comforting voice made those years precious
to me.Unfortunately, grandfather died from a heart attack and the pub was eventually sold to a
family, which meant I had to find work elsewhere.
Ithengotajobatthelocalhospitalandenjoyed it,though nothingfeltthesameasworkingforone's own

kept us busy, but one thing stayed on my mind."I'd love to buy back the pub oneday,"I said to
Craig.Part of me still longed for the days of being behind the bar and welcomingcustomers with a
smile,just like my grandfather had.
In 2014,the pub came on the market again,so Craig and I went for it.Our offer was successful.
Running it again was like stepping back in time;nothing much had changed, and I enjoyed slipping·into
my old job.But Craig and I had plans to expand. We used our savings and did some renovations (翻新),like
putting in a beer garden outside and building more motel(汽车旅馆)rooms.I felt like I was not only doing
a great business, but also keeping alive our family tradition.
In February 2021,I went to the neighboring state to get some supplies and on the way back,I
got a call from Craig."There's been a fire at the pub,"he cried.Being hours away was hard as I
didn't know how bad the damage was.

Firstly, many books are damaged during the process of drifting, probably due to the lack of a

W: Hi, guys! Today, I'd like to share with you my recent trip to Ireland. My first impressions? It
was really beautiful-green, and quite rural. There are plenty of wonderful museums, like the
National Museum, which houses treasures from ancientIreland. But what I loved mostwere the
pubs.Guinnesswasdelicious--evenifyou'renotabeerfan,youmightjustgetaddicted.Thelive
music in the pubs was fantastic too. However, I hated the weather. I remember it was in the
middle of August, but I had to wear a woolly jumper! The weather changed quickly, too. You
could wake up to a sunny day, but at midday it began to rain. Then in the afternoon, the sun

While we were waiting for our food, Me1 Gibson suddenly sat down next to us! You know, he
