As Tara pushed her daughter Norah around the store last month, she passed an old man who was by himself. The old man foʊked cold, until Norah shouted to him, “Hi! It's my birthday today!” The man stopped and his demeanor changed from distant and serious to warm and friendly. “How old are you today?” the man asked. After some time talking together,Norah asked her mom to take a picture of her with her new friend/“Mr. Dan”, Dan Peterson,82. They hugged and after ten minutes went their separate ways. That could have been the end of the story. But it is actually the beginning of a special relationship. Tara posted the picture of her daughter and Mr. Dan on Facebook and someone who recognized him reached out to her with his contact information. It turned out that Mr. Dan's wife died in March and he had been suffering from depression and anxiety ever since. The person on Facebook told Tara that it was the first time they had seen Mr. Dan smile since the death of his wife. Knowing that, Tara contacted Mr. Dan, and ever since Norah and the 82-year-old have developed a friendship unlike any other. “She has shown me a depth of love, a depth that I didn't know existed,” Mr Dan told the reporter. Mr Ban told Tara that before meeting Norah, he hadn't had one night of uninterrupted sleep. Anxiety kept him up at all hours and made him restless. After meeting Norah, he said he now sleeps soundly. For Mr. Dan's 82nd birthday on October 20, the mother and the daughter brought balloons and presents— and, of course, cupcakes. Mr. Dan will also spend a day around Thanksgiving with Norah and her family. “If you don't take the time to notice people, you will never know how you can positively impact a life,” Tara Wood said. 24. However, the process of producing concrete is one of the most envisonmentally unfriendly processes in the world. In the process, not only is carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)released into the air by the energy used to heat the limestone(石灰石), but the limestone itself also gives out a huge amount of the element. Luckily, a number of start-ups throughout the world are using creative thinking to make the construction industry a whole lot more friendly to the planet. A Canadian company called CarbonCure has found a way to inject(注入) concrete with carbon dioxide itself. Not only does this trap the carbon dioxide into the concrete, keeping it from running away into the atmosphere, but it also creates a super strong material called calcium carbonate, which reduces the total amount of concrete that needs to be used. California-based Brimstone, is creating carbon-negative concrete by doing away with limestone entirely and instead using silicate(硅酸盐) rock, a material that does not release carbon dioxide when heated. Instead, the process produces magnesium(镁), which absorbs carbon dioxide, as the basis for their concrete. Additionally, researchers at Australia’ s RMIT University have recently released a study showing that adding coffee grounds instead of sand to concrete could make it much stronger, reducing the amount of sand used, as well as the amount of concrete that would need to be used in the final product. The biggest barrier at this point is convincing members of the industry that the new types of concrete are sat to be used, according to Stacy Smedley, director at a non-profit focused on decarbonizing construction. Hopefully these new solutions to the environmental problems of concrete will soon be widely adopted. Given the significant part the construction industry has in releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, great improvements can be made when more environmentally friendly materials are used. 28. What environmental issue does traditional concrete production cause? A. The high consumption of energy. B. The processing of waste materials. C. The mass release of carbon dioxide. D. The use of non-recyclable resourcés. 29. What does CarbonCure do to address the environmental issue A. Add sand to concrete.B. Put carbon dioxide into concrete. C. Replace silicate rock with concrete. D. Absorb carbon dioxide with magnesium. 30. According to Smedley, what is the major challenge faced by these new solutions? A. Difficulty in making profits. B. Lack of funding for research. C. Convincing the public of the improvement. D. Removing the industry members' safety concerns. 31. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage? A. To introduce innovations to produce concrete. B. To emphasize the significance of creativity. C. To advocate environmental protection. D. To promote an alternative to concrete. D For several decades, there has been an extensive and organized campaign intended to generate distrust in science, funded by those whose interests and ideologies are threatened by the findings of modern science. In response, scientists have tended to stress the success of science. After all, scientists have been right about most things. Stressing successes isn't wrong, but to r many people it's not persuasive. An alternative answer to the question “Why trust science?” is that scientists use the so-called scientific method. If you' ve got a high school-science textbook lying around, you' ll probably find that answer in it. But what is typically thought to be the scientific method— develop a hypothesis(假 设), then design an experiment to test it— isn't what scientists actually do. Science is dynamic: new methods get invented; old ones get abandoned; and sometimes, scientists can be found doing many different things. If there is no identifiable scientific method, then what is the reason for trust in science? The answer is how those claims are evaluated. The common element in modern science, regardless of the specifie field or the particular methods being used, is the strict scrutiny(审查)of claims. It's this tough, sustained process that works to make sure faulty claims are rejected.A scientific claim is never accepted as true until it has gone through a lengthy“peer review”because the reviewers are experts in the same field who have both the right and the obligation(责任) to find faults. A key aspect of scientific judgment is that it is done collectively, No claim gets accepted until it has been vetted by dozens, if not hundreds, of heads. In areas that have been contested, like climate science and vaccine safety, it's thousands. This is why we are generally justified in not worrying too much if a single scientist, eyen a very famous one, disagrees with the claim. And this is why diversity in science— the more people looking at a claim from different angles — is important. Does this process ever go wrong? Of course. Scientists are humans. There is always the possibility of revising a claim on the basis of new evidence. Some people argue that we should not trust science because scientists are“always changing their minds”. While examples of truly settled science being overturned are far fewer than is sometimes claimed, they do exist. But thebeauty of this scientific process is that it explains what might otherwise appear paradoxical(矛 盾的): that science produces both novelty and stability. Scientists do change their minds in the face of new evidence, but this is a strength of science, not a weakness. 32. What does the author think of the scientific method? A. Unchallenged. B, Unfixed. C. Reliable. D. Recognized. 33. What does the underlined word“vetted” in paragraph 4 probably mean. A. Explained. B. Examined. C. Repeated. D. Released. 34. According to the passage, the author may agree that A. it is not persuasive to reject those taulty claims B. settled science tends to be collectively overturned C. a leading expert cannot play a decisive role in a scrutiny D. diversity in knowledge is the common element in science 35. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Put Your Faith in Science B. Defend the Truth in Science C. Apply Your Mind to Science D.
