湖北省黄冈中学2025届高三第二次模拟考试英语试卷(共 10 页)第3页For those of us living in the countryside, a good pair of wellington boots is more than just
footwear—it’s an essential tool for daily life. They must handle heavy winter rains, cross streams
without leaking, and walk slowly through thick mud. Even in summer, they’re handy for early-
morning walks through wet grass. By my back door, five well-worn pairs stand ready for action,
having served my family faithfully over the years. These rain boots have developed from children’s
shiny, colorful pairs to the durable, practical adult versions that see us through every season.
My favorite brand is known for durability and style—perfect for country life. It emphasizes
that rain boots are a “must-have” for people living in regions with frequent rain. But if you live in
the city, do you really need a pair? Let’s be clear: A rubber ankle boot— which doesn’t allow for
playing in small pools or jumping through water in winter — isn’t a boot. And I’m not against a pair
of colorful boots at the beach or camping but in the countryside, they clearly say, “just visiting”.
Similarly, durable country rain boots look out of place in a supermarket after a walk.
Wellington boots became popular in the 1800s thanks to Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of
Wellington. Originally called Hessians, these tall boots with decorative strings were worn by
fashionable gentlemen. The Duke adapted them for practicality while keeping them smart for casual
events. Since then, they’ve undergone remarkable transformations; in the 1980s, green boots
symbolized British upper-class style. In the actual greener 1990s, I had Dunlop boots made from
recycled rubber, which lasted ages. Today, most are made from non-recyclable plastic, but eco-
conscious options like natural rubber boots lined with organic cotton are gaining popularity.
In the end, you want a pair of boots that you don’t have to struggle to get on or off, and that
you can rely on. They become old friends and you miss them when they go. I’ll never be without
them.
24. Why does the author mention the development of wellington boots in the first paragraph?
A. To show their popularity among children.
B. To highlight their changing styles over time.
C. To suggest that they are more suitable for adults.
D. To emphasize their importance in the countryside.
25. What can we infer about colorful boots in the countryside?
A. They are preferred by locals.
B. They indicate the wearer is not local.
C. They are more practical than plain boots.
D. They are suitable for shopping in supermarkets.
26. The author develops Paragraph 3 primarily by ______.
A. listing materials used over time
B. focusing on upper-class fashion
C. tracing changes through time
D. noting environmental shifts
27. What is the author’s attitude towards Wellington boots?
A. Critical. B. Affectionate. C. Objective. D. Dismissive.
C
“No sound is more universal than laughter. There are no language or cultural barriers—everyone
湖北省黄冈中学2025届高三第二次模拟考试英语试卷(共 10 页)第4页everywhere understands the concept,” says Sophie Scott, one of the world’s leading experts on
laughter.
“Laughter is a nonverbal emotional expression,” Scott explains. “The emotion that we seem to
be expressing with it is joy, but it’s a social joy that is primarily experienced with other people.”
The community aspect of joy is paramount to understanding the reasons we laugh. While
people certainly can laugh when they are alone, they’re much less likely to than when they’re around
other people. According to a scientific paper published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences, people are
30 times more likely to laugh if they are with someone else than if they are alone.
But it’s not something we do intentionally, at least not when it comes to the sort of genuine
laughter that bubbles(洋溢着) out of us. What’s more, there are times when we can’t help but laugh,
such as if we’re being tickled(挠痒痒).
So what exactly is happening in the body when we laugh? Scott explains that laughter is a
physiological response. When we laugh, the brain releases endorphins(内啡肽), which relax the
whole body.
In other words, we’re hardwired for laughter. Everyone has the ability to laugh, even blind
babies who have never seen laughter and deaf babies who have never heard it. Other mammals laugh
too, including rats when they are tickled. “It’s likely that many species of animals laugh and we just
don’t realize it because we don’t know what their laughter sounds like,” Scott says.
Sure, you’ll snicker(窃笑) at silly dad jokes and funny pickup lines, but contrary to what many
believe, finding something funny is not the only cause. So why do we laugh? There are four primary
aspects, and they relate to our need for social connections, our desire to hide our emotions, our
uncontrollable bodily responses and, of course, our sense of humor.
28. Which of the following is most likely to replace the underlined phrase “paramount to”?
A. caused by B. equal to C. removed from D. essential to
29. In which of the following case will a person makes genuine laughter?
A. He laughs to comfort himself when he fails an exam.
B. A nice birthday gift brings him joy.
C. He laughs at a lame joke told by his dad.
D. The brain lacks endorphins.
30. How does the author support his argument in the last paragraph but one?
A. By analyzing the process of a physiological response.
B. By listing examples of laughter made by creatures.
C. By comparing the laughter of humans and animals.
D. By making a quotation of a famous person.
31. What might be discussed in the following paragraphs after this passage?
A. The reasons why we can’t understand silly dad jokes.
B. The four ways we can laugh happily.
C. The main reasons why we laugh.
D. The ways we can improve our sense of humor.

Some wounds won’t heal(康复) by themselves. Current chronic(慢性的) wound treatments
often require surgery or lead to overuse of antibiotic, which can worsen the problem of antibiotic-
湖北省黄冈中学2025届高三第二次模拟考试英语试卷(共 10 页)第5页resistant bacteria. “There’s an urgent need for personalized wound treatment,” says California
Institute of Technology biomedical engineer Wei Gao.
For a study published in Science Advances, Gao and his colleagues used rodents(啮齿动物)
to test a “smart bandage” that could make chronic wound healing easier and faster. It consists of a
stretchable bandage attached to the skin, containing medication and a thin layer of electronics that
monitors and wirelessly transmits data about the wound’s condition. The bandage can carry out
controlled delivery of two treatments: a drug and an electric current.
The bandage builds on previous efforts to promote healing with electricity. This process, called
electrotherapy, works both by attracting immune cells and skin cells to the wound and by boosting
cell growth and division. A study published last year led by engineer Yuanwen Jiang, now at the
University of Pennsylvania, described a bandage that monitored temperature and conductivity, using
the collected data to control delivery of electrotherapy. The new research adds biochemical sensing
capabilities. “Biochemical signals open up new opportunities because you’re able to really examine
what’s happening on a molecular(分子的) level. That’s the key novelty here.” Jiang says. Gao and
his colleagues also added an electroactive material that releases an anti-infectious drug when
stimulated by an electrode. Another electrode stimulates the wound directly.
The team tested the bandage on rodents with wounds and found that it accurately detected
changes in infection and physical states at different stages of wound healing. The bandage’s combined
treatments fully healed rodent wounds in two weeks. Each individual treatment achieved at least
partial healing within that time, and untreated animals did not heal.
Researchers still need to investigate the bandage’s biosensor durability in human patients’
chronic wounds. “Requirements for the lifetime of the device are very different between rodents and
human subjects,” Jiang says. “Stability over that extended period has not been tested yet.”
32. What is the advantage of the “smart bandage” in the study?
A. It avoids the use of antibiotic.
B. It can help patients receive personalized surgeries.
C. It can monitor and adjust treatment in real time.
D. It is made from stretchable materials.
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The importance of electrotherapy in wound healing.
B. The breakthroughs in wound healing with Smart Bandages.
C. The challenges scientists meet in the lengthy research process.
D. The comparison between two great scientists’ researches.
34. What can we learn about the smart bandage?
A. The smart bandage proves ineffective to some animals.
B. The durability of the bandage in human wounds remains unclear.
C. Different bandages are used at different stages of wound healing.
D. Different lifetimes of humans require different bandages.
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A. New Bandage Medicates Chronic Wounds
B. The Evolution of Electrotherapy Bandage
C. The Science Behind Electrotherapy Bandage
D. How Smart Bandage Heals Wounds

As the aging population grows, more people choose aging in place—living their later years at
home. This lifestyle can be satisfying and autonomous. 36 Understanding how to adapt
home and lifestyle is crucial. Let’s explore how to make aging in place a reality.
The first step is ensuring home safety and accessibility. We should focus on kitchens and
bathrooms where fall risks are greatest. Essential bathroom improvements include adding grab bars,
walk-in tubs or showers, and non-slip flooring, along with improved lighting. 37 Key
structural adjustments like widened doorways and main-floor living spaces enhance accessibility
throughout the home.
Modern technology enables seniors to live independently at home for longer. From smart home
devices to health emergency call systems, technology offers both convenience and security. 38
Take GoGoGrandparent as an example: this platform simplifies access to transportation, meals, and
groceries through phone-based services. Its user-friendly system gives seniors reliable support for
daily tasks while maintaining their independence. Health technologies like telehealth and fall-
detecting wearables provide medical monitoring, crucial for seniors with chronic conditions (慢
性病) or mobility challenges.
39 They offer key resources such as meal delivery, accessible transportation, and senior
centers. The senior centers offer social activities, ranging from fitness classes to hobby groups.
These activities promote both mental and physical well-being. For personalized care, home care
services adapt to changing needs. 40 Additionally, senior advocacy organizations help with
available programs and ensure access to all available benefits.
Aging in place promises a familiar, independent life. Seniors can achieve this by making smart
home changes, adopting helpful tech and tapping into community support.
A. However, it needs careful preparation.
B. Local communities significantly support seniors aging in place.
C. Family members usually take responsibility for these daily routines.
D. They assist with daily tasks like personal cleanliness, cooking or medical support.
E. Specialized services help seniors lacking smartphone skills bridge the digital divide.
F. For smartphone-challenged seniors, innovative services offer phone-based assistance.
G. Similarly, kitchens benefit from lowered countertops, accessible shelving, and trip-free
flooring.

generations to study, to appreciate and to collect.
湖北省黄冈中学2025届高三第二次模拟考试英语试卷(共 10 页)第8页It is believed that seals came out as early as 8,000 years ago after our ancestors could make
pottery wares and had private property. They were assumed to make marks on their own 57

Over twenty years ago, Virginia Squier was guiding a group of middle school students on a trip
to England. She brought along her 8-year-old daughter Sarah.
One evening, near the end of the visit, Squier, her daughter and the school group were on a
platform in the London Underground getting ready to head to their next destination. It was 5 p.m.
and the station was packed. Squier took hold of Sarah’s hand and began counting her students. Just
湖北省黄冈中学2025届高三第二次模拟考试英语试卷(共 10 页)第9页then, a train pulled up to the platform.
“Suddenly, my daughter let go of my hand, jumped on the train, and the doors began to close,”
Virginia recalled. “As the train gathered speed, I ran alongside trying to force the door open by
digging my fingers into the black rubber seal. Through the window, I could see my daughter’s
panicked face.”
The last thing she saw before the train pulled out of the station was her daughter crying and
pounding her small fists against the glass. Behind her, a young man dressed in black leather with a
spiked (有尖刺的) collar stood up and moved toward her. Virginia’s heart raced—his rough
appearance matched every warning she’d ever heard about “dangerous” strangers. His black leather
jacket with sharp-looking decorations, messy hair, even the way he walked—everything about him
screamed “trouble”. She imagined the worst—what if he was a thief? What if he took Sarah
somewhere she couldn’t find her?
Terrified, Virginia searched for help but struggled to explain the emergency to a station worker
who didn’t speak English well. “My daughter — the train!” she cried, but he didn’t understand. She
tried speaking slowly, then louder, even gesturing wildly, but the language barrier made her panic
grow. Each failed attempt left her more desperate as the train disappeared into the tunnel. The young
man on the train had witnessed what had happened and immediately stepped in to help.
Paragraph 1:
He bent down and gently wiped Sarah’s tears with his sleeve.
Paragraph 2:
As Virginia hugged Sarah tightly, the young man disappeared into the crowd.
