Academician Yan Ning of the Chinese Academy of Sciences received the 2024 L’ Oreal-UNESCO for Women
in Science International Award for the Asia-Pacific region at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on Tuesday. Yan, a
professor at the School of Life Sciences at Tsinghua University and the founding president of the Shenzhen
Medical Academy of Research and Translation, was recognized for her research in structural biology that
has helped explain multiple disorders and guided the treatment of pain syndrome (综合症).
As the eighth Chinese scientist to win the award, Yan discovered the atomic structure of multiple
membrane (膜) proteins that mediate (介导) the traffic of ions (离子) and sugars across the cell
membrane, revealing the principles that govern cross-membrane transport.
“Our goal is to broaden the boundaries of human knowledge,” Yan said in an interview published by
UNESCO. “Through cutting-edge technologies, my work has evolved from exploring the processes of physiology
and cellular activities to precisely identifying potentially effective health therapies. Ultimately, I aim to use science
to understand the universe, to study the origins of life and the foundations of consciousness.”
UNESCO said that as a leading authority in her field, “Yan inspires female scientists globally and is a strong
advocate for gender equality in research and science education”.
"The path to becoming a female scientist may be challenging, but it is not enough to stop you from moving
forward. So, be brave and be yourself," Yan said in her acceptance speech.
Since 2015, she has been organizing annual forums for female scientists. In the two research institutions she
leads, over half of the management positions are held by women.
“We must establish gender equality, establish more female role models, change the historical and cultural
prejudices in academia and society toward women,” Yan said. “We need to prove that women also possess
leadership qualities and deserve fair recognition.”

We all know that cars are dangerous to our health. Drivers of cars kill thousands every year directly
by taking their lives away at the same time, and indirectly through pollution from exhausts (尾气). Then
of course, there is the damage that drivers do to themselves by not getting exercise. I wrote last year that cars
are killing us, and it is time to limit the damage to drivers and to people around them, just like we did with
smoking.
Environmental educator Arwen Birch has an interesting proposition that picks up on this. He thinks advertising
of cars should be banned, just like it was for cigarettes in most of the world. “Smoking and car use have
comparable health costs; yet while we have the strictest tobacco promotion laws in the world, we allow car
companies to promote themselves uncontrolled.”
Birch reminds us that just like cigarettes, car exhaust contains benzene and many other cancer-causing
chemicals that build up inside the car. Besides, car exhausts contain a poisonous mix of chemicals that are involved
in a wide range of diseases including cancer, Alzheimer’s and respiratory illnesses. Researchers from the University
of Melbourne argued recently that it is car use, not car accidents, that is the more significant killer.
Of course, some people need cars, and nobody was very happy with my earlier proposal to ban them entirely
from cities. Some people believe while banning car advertising might reduce the demand for big fancy car, Elon
Musk hasn’t spent a cent on advertising and has had no trouble selling his cars.
Rates of smoking have been dropping ever since tobacco advertising bans came into force in 1976. Given the
enormous cost to public health and convenience facilities posed by cars, perhaps we could start considering we do
the same with them.
Readers often complain that I seem quick to trample (践踏) on people’s rights and freedoms, just
because I don’t personally like being poisoned or squished (压坏). But at some point we have to ask what
we can do to stop the destruction caused by the automobile, the pollution, the congestion, the murdering of children
in the streets. Perhaps an ad ban is a place to start. What do you think?
8.What is the author’s purpose of mentioning so many damages that cars do to us in paragraph 1?
A.To introduce his argument in this text. B.To show us the disadvantages of cars.
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司C.To remind us of the potential harm of cars. D.To advise us to use less cars in our life.
9.What do we know from paragraph 2?
A.Smoking is strictly forbidden on earth. B.Birch is a famous environment activist.
C.Tobacco advertising is strictly banned. D.Car advertising is not allowed in many countries.
10.What does the author think of the ban on tobacco advertising?
A.Strict. B.Successful. C.Abnormal. D.Stable.
11.What does the author think it is necessary for us to do first of all?
A.To protect the environment. B.To spend less time on cars.
C.To eat healthy foods. D.To ban car advertising.

The sounds of rain, birdsong, or the wind rustling leaves in the forest are all part of the music of nature. These
sounds can fire emotions and promote calm. That’s why tracks of nature have been used in so many songs like
“Blackbird” by the Beatles.
Now, Sounds Right, an initiative from the Museum for the United Nations is cooperating with
Spotify and other streaming platforms to recognize nature as a musician. This means that nature can be
paid royalties (版税) that can be made use of when it comes to environmental causes and conservation.
This new initiative allows artists who use environmental sounds to credit “Nature” as a featured artist and share the
royalties.
“It’s a way of saying to artists, We all use sounds like seagulls, waves and wind. Why don’t we pay nature a
royalty?” said Brian Eno, who remixed his collaboration Get Real with David Bowie. “Hopefully, it’ll be a river, or
a torrent, or a flood of royalties—and then what we do is distribute that among groups of people who are working
on projects to help us deal with the future.”
Other artists who contributed songs for the project include Tom Walker and Ellie Goulding, MO, and
alternative music star Aurora who is releasing a new song, “A Soul With No King”, that includes the sounds of a
forest in her native Norway. “I feel like music that has the ability to make contact with nature seem appealing
again,” she said, “because, somewhere deep inside our soul, we are really yearning for it.”
While there has been a long debate on whether streaming contributes to harmful emissions, giving nature
credit and royalties can turn streaming to the right side of climate action. This project is just one of a growing
movement to give nature legal rights and could restore the weak relationship between humans and the environment.
12.Why does the author mention the Beatles in the first paragraph?
A.To prove the key role of nature in music. B.To show the influence of music on nature.
C.To emphasize the importance of musicians. D.To tell the inspiration for the new initiative.
13.What will the royalties for nature be used for?
A.Human health. B.Musical activities.
C.Environmental protection. D.The entertainment industry.
14.What does the underlined phrase “yearning for” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Recording. B.Desiring. C.Singing. D.Interpreting.
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司15.What does the author indicate at last?
A.The new initiative still deserves praising.
B.Streaming does great harm to the environment.
C.More projects are needed to fight climate change.
D.Humans have been living in harmony with nature.

David Stevens, a middle school English teacher, always greeted his students with a warm smile. He had a
special way of making every student feel important, regardless of their academic performance. His classroom was
decorated with colorful posters carrying positive messages, and he often used interesting stories to make his
lessons more engaging. However, one student, Tom Wilson, particularly caught his attention.
Tom was a quiet boy who sat in the back of the classroom. Unlike his classmates who actively participated in
discussions, Tom rarely spoke and often looked down at his desk. His test scores were low, and other teachers had
almost given up on him. What worried David most was that Tom seemed to be getting more withdrawn with each
passing day. He noticed how Tom would sit alone during lunch breaks, avoiding interaction with his classmates.
During group activities, other students hesitated to partner with him, which only made Tom escape further into his
shell. Sometimes, Tom would even skip classes, making his situation even more concerning. But David noticed
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司something special—whenever he mentioned stories about overcoming challenges, Tom’s eyes would light up.
One day, after class, David asked Tom to stay behind. Instead of discussing his grades, David asked
about Tom’s interests. Surprisingly, Tom shared his passion for building model airplanes. His eyes sparkled
(闪闪发光) as he described how he spent hours carefully assembling each part. He even showed David photos
of his collections on his phone. David realized that Tom wasn’t uninterested in learning; he just needed someone to
believe in him.
David began incorporating examples related to aviation (航空) in his English lessons. When teaching
vocabulary, he used words like "fly", "travel" and "height". For writing assignments, he encouraged Tom
to write about his hobby. He also brought books about famous pilots and aircraft designers to class.
Gradually, Tom started participating more actively in class. His confidence grew, and his grades began to improve.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, David started a special class project.
