With kids increasingly attached to their iPads, phones, and laptops, how can we get them to read
more books? It's easier than you think. In Michigan, a barbershop is doing its part to encourage kids
to read. Here's how it works: when a child gets their haircut at The Fuller Cut and reads a book aloud
to their barber during their haircut, they get a $2 discount on the cut. Yes, it really is that simple: read
your book aloud and you get a discount.
Griffin, who has been cutting hair at The Fuller Cut for twenty years, started the Read to
YourBarber program. He told the local media that parents love it, while the kids like getting the two
dollars back— and that the two dollars often goes directly into the kids’ pockets. Griffin says teachers
love the initiative—— they say that it does so much for the kids during the school year, for The Fuller
Cut serves a diverse community with the books featuring positive images of African-Americans,
which could be an astronaut, an athlete, or a writer.
This isn't the first barbershop to do this, though, Griffin said that he first read about a similar
literacy program in Harlem. Once he got the OK from his boss, the father of three began bringing his
own books into the shop and soon people in the area began donating books. Griffin said, “And that's
just how it started. It wasn't anything grand. I just wanted to be responsible.”
While the initiative has attracted new customers to the barbershop, the best part, according
toGriffin, is that little kids who don't know how to read watch the older kids—— and then pick up a
book for themselves. “When a kid thinks it's cool to read, that's a gift,” says Griffin. “If we can get
kids to come back to The Fuller Cut as adults in college and they tell us, ‘Because you guys had us
read here,it made me want to be a writer or journalist,’ that’ s really the end goal.”
24. Why did The Fuller Cut start the reading program?
A. To donate more books to poor children.B. To arouse children's desire for reading.
C. To provide children with discount books.D. To clarify the harm of electronic products.
25. What do we know about the program?A. Griffin's boss donated the books to the barber shop.
B. Griffin launched the project twenty years ago in Harlem.
C. The barber shop inspires multiracial children to dream big.
D. Parents are discontented with children keeping the money.
26. According to Griffin, what is the most inspiring part of the initiative?
A. Younger kids begin to follow the older ones’ example.
B. More children dream of becoming writers or reporters.
C. The number of customers to the barbershop is increasing.
D. Children who go to the barbershop perform well in college.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new literacy program is donating books to kids.
B. Barbers offer discount to children who read aloud.
C. Griffin opens a discount bookstore for local children.
D. A barbershop provides haircut service at a lower price.

Media literacy (素养) is finally getting some late-arriving attention. Whether it's the increasing
awareness of political disinformation or the threat of AI, discussions about media literacy are on the
rise. The adoption of media literacy in the classroom, however, stagnates.
The driving force for providing kids with media literacy skills often gets lost in the moral panic
over technology and kids. Fear has overrun reason, and people can't decide whether to blame social
media, mobile devices, tech companies, or the Internet. They are concerned with claims that
technology and social media are the causes of teenage mental health issues despite the weak
associations. In response, too many solutions are“ostrich policies(鸵鸟政策)” that want to ban
devices and shut down social media but don't address more fundamental issues.
Policies that set age limits on social media access and restrict devices during school to
minimize disturbance can be helpful but are incomplete solutions. Social media didn't invent
bullies(霸凌) or the enormous effect of peer pressure. Social media platforms may be a new
battleground, but they are not the source. Unfortunately, many current policies ignore the need to
teach kids how to manage these challenges. There is frighteningly little attention paid to preparing
kids to make good decisions when they will, unavoidably, get online.
On the bright side, the rapid development of AI and increasing attention to the amount of
misinformation online have helped normalize the acceptance of media literacy as a core skill. While
suggestions to limit inappropriate device use, increase face-to-face socialization, and engage in
outdoor play are beneficial, they do not build the core skills that will keep kids safe offline and are
fundamental to well-being and life success: good citizenship, self-awareness and self-control. Thosethings take teaching, whether you are online or outside.
Media literacy is an essential life skill that, once learned, can be applied to any content. While
waiting for public education to catch up, parents and educators can build media literacy skills at
home with numerous resources, ranging from family technology contracts and discussion guides to
easy activities that can be done at home with kids.
28. What does the underlined word“stagnates” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. Advances significantly. B. Collapses abruptly.
C. Underperforms substantially. D. Initiates officially.
29. What factors contribute to people's moral panic over technology and kids?
A. Widespread use of technology and social media.
B. Inability to provide kids with media literacy skills effectively.
C. Concern about the lack of parental control over tech devices.
D. Fear of the impact of technology on teenage mental health.
30. What does paragraph 3 of the text focus on?
A. The importance of banning social media.B. The shortcomings of existing policies.
C. The limitations of social media platforms.D. The necessity of managing online challenges.
31. Which of the following belongs to media literacy?
A. Minimizing social media usage. B. Evaluating media content critically.
C. Increasing in-person interactions.D. Recognizing the risks of social media.

The Malagasy baobab trees, a typical feature of Madagascar's landscape, should have
disappeared long ago due to the extinction of its former seed-distributing animals. However, it did
not.Seheno Andriantsaralaza at the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar and Onja
Razafindratsima at the University of California, Berkeley, now think they may know the reason.
Together with their colleagues, the scientists monitored 15 trees to find new baobab seed-di
stributing animals in a western Madagascar region. They also set up camera traps around seed-
containing fruits, and searched any feces(粪便) along the way for the presence of seeds.
They report in the journal Biotropica that a native rat was caught on camera handling whole
fruits on four occasions. Although there was no record of the rat breaking the fruits open, the team
found 13fruits that had been chewed into and had their seeds removed. Though the bite marks were
not clear enough to identify a culprit(肇事者), this was clear evidence that a seed-distributing animal
was out there. They then found convincing evidence: baobab seeds in seven different piles of bush-
pig feces.
The discovery is not without irony (讽刺). Scientists believe bush pigs were brought to
Madagascar by humans sometime between 1,000 and 5,000 years ago, just as the former seed-distributing animals were going extinct. Their arrival was a lucky break for the baobabs, especially
as scientists have determined a seed's journey through the pig-like digestive system doesn't reduce
its ability to grow.
While the finding is important in its own right, it also provides valuable evidence that
introduced species may not be entirely harmful. Madagascar's pigs, for example, though not native,
have made themselves essential to the survival of truly native species. Similar relationships are
suspected to hold in South America between rabbits native to Europe and plants with no seed
distributors. For Dr.Andriantsaralaza, that suggests the full ecological role of introduced species
should be considered before talk of extinction begins.
32. Why did researchers conduct the study?
A. To identify the seed carriers for baobabs.
B. To explore how baobab trees survived.
C. To study how animals distribute baobab seeds.
D. To find out if baobab trees are endangered.
33. What convinced the researchers of the real seed carrier?
A. The way a rat handled the fruits. B. The presence of chewed seeds.
C. The seeds found in animal feces. D. The marks on the baobab fruits.
34. What is the author's attitude toward humans introducing new species?
A. Optimistic. B. Reflective. C. Critical. D. Neutral.
35. What is the author's purpose in mentioning rabbits?
A. To argue against introducing new species.
B. To show that rabbits benefit native species.
C. To highlight the importance of seed carriers.
D. To suggest that introduced species may help.

Erie raised his daughter Riley alone. One day, Eric noticed a young teenage boy standing in
front of a drugstore. He approached him, and found out that the boy wanted to buy medicine for his
sick mother, but had no money. The boy cried out, “If I don't bring home medicine, my mom will die.
But I won't be able to handle it.”
Upon hearing this, Erie didn't hesitate to pay for the medicine. “I’ ll pay for the medicine on his
behalf,” he said, handing the pharmacist (药剂师)a couple of bills from his pocket. The boy looked
at Eric with grateful eyes, and cried, “Thank you so much. You are heaven-sent.”
“There will always be people willing to help you, son,” Eric told him before handing him two
portions of food. “Here, take this to your mom and have a hot meal with her,” he said before letting
the boy go.
His daughter Riley saw the whole scene and said, “Dad, we have barely enough money. Why
did you pay for the medicine?”“Riley, the good you put out into the world will eventually find its
way back to you. Just keep doing good,” Eric told his daughter.
When Riley turned thirty, she needed an operation urgently after being told there was something
wrong with her heart. With difficulty breathing, Eric rushed Riley to the hospital in an ambulance.
“You’ ll be alright, Riley,” he cried. “Don't worry; Daddy is here. We’ ll get through this together,”
he promised her.Eric did try his best to find the money for his daughter's operation. He asked all of his friends,
but it was still not enough. Therefore, Eric decided to sell their house. It was enough to pay for her
operation, but they would be left with nothing. “It's okay,” he told himself. “I will be able to earn
money again, but if I lose my daughter, nothing will ever bring her back.”
By the time Eric made it back to the hospital, Riley was in her hospital room, weak and pale. He
sat beside her bed and held her hand. “You’ ll be okay, my sweet daughter. We’ ll soon have the
money for the operation,” he promised her.
