I was born and raised in Minnesota, the USA, but as an adult I have mostly lived in
Europe and Africa. I teach cross-cultural management at the International Business School
near Paris. For the last 15 years, I’ve studied how people in different parts of the world
build trust, communicate, and make decisions especially in the workplace.
While traveling in Tokyo recently with a colleague, I gave a short talk to a group of 20
managers. At the end, I asked whether there were any questions or comments. No hands
went up, so I went to sit down. My colleague whispered to me, “I think there actually were
some comments, Erin. Do you mind if I try?” I agreed, but I guessed it a waste of breath.
He asked the group again. “Any comments or questions?”
Still, no one raised a hand, but this time he looked very carefully at each person in the
silent audience. Gesturing to one of them, he said, “Do you have something to add?” To
my amazement, she responded “Yes, thank you.” and asked me a very interesting question.
My colleague repeated this several times, looking directly at the audience and asking for
more questions or comments.
After the session, I asked my colleague, “How do you know that those people had
questions?” He hesitated, not sure how to explain it, and then said, “it has to do with how
bright their eyes are.”
He continued, “In Japan, we don’t make as much direct eye contact as you do in the
West. So when you asked if there were any comments, most people were not looking
高三英语 第 3 页 共 8 页directly at you. But a few people in the group were looking right at you, and their eyes
were bright. That indicates that they would be happy to have you call on them.”
I thought to myself I would never have learned from my upbringing in Minnesota.
Since then, I try to focus on understanding behavior in other cultures I encounter, and keep
finding the bright eyes in the room.
24. What can we conclude from the first paragraph?
A. The author enjoys traveling around the world.
B. Life in Minnesota has made the author worn out.
C.The author is somewhat familiar with different cultures.
D. The author may start his own business in the future.
25. What was the author's initial reaction when hearing the colleague's whisper?
A. He immediately went back to his seat and sat down.
B. He thought his colleague had some questions to ask.
C. He believed his colleague's effort would be useless.
D. He felt very grateful for his colleague's suggestion.
26. Where does the author’s colleague probably come from?
A. Japan. B. America. C. Africa. D. France
27. Which is the proper title for the passage?
A. Focusing on Behavior in Cultures B. Admiring the Beauty in the Eye
C. Sharing Different Cultures in TokyoD. Looking at Another Culture in the Eye

Imagine standing in front of a restaurant menu with countless options, each sounding
appealing. You spend 20 minutes thinking, only to feel anxious that the dish you finally
choose might not be the best one available. This is “FOBO” — the fear of a better option.
“FOBO is the anxiety that something better will come along, which makes it difficult
to commit to existing choices when making a decision,” said venture capitalist Patrick
McGinnis, who came up with the term, “Especially if there are several options available,
you worry that a better or even perfect choice might be out there, yet you struggle to
choose just one.” While it’s important to weigh pros and cons and think through major
decisions, FOBO keeps us caught in a loop (循环), forever chasing the unclear “what if”.
The concept of FOBO is based on a mistaken belief that “the longer we look, the more
options we will have, and this will somehow lead to a better outcome.” However, there’s
no guarantee of this. Instead, people may wait so long that they end up losing good options
and regret not making a choice sooner. Constantly second-guessing oneself and living in
uncertainty can cause stress and exhaustion. Psychologist Patricia Dixon explains,
“Mentally, FOBO can contribute to anxiety and depression, as the constant search for
better options prevents individuals from fully enjoying their present circumstances. This
mindset leads to dissatisfaction, weakens self-trust, and ultimately hinders personal growth
and connection.”
To overcome FOBO, the key is to streamline decision-making processes. Start by
setting clear priorities and narrowing down your options to make choices easier. Limit the
time spent on decisions to avoid overthinking, break down complex decisions into smaller,
manageable parts, and gather only essential information. Trust your instincts (直觉) and
embrace the idea of focusing on finding a “good enough” option rather than obsessing over
perfection. Remind yourself that even if a better option appears later, you’ve already made
progress.
28. Why do people experience FOBO?
高三英语 第 4 页 共 8 页A. They want to make decisions quickly.
B. They have few choices to select from.
C. They fear missing out on a better option.
D. They tend to take account of others’ views.
29. What is a potential impact of FOBO on individuals?
A. It blocks their way to embracing different ideas.
B. It weakens their ability to analyze complex issues.
C. It prevents them from achieving a perfect outcome.
D. It makes them dissatisfied with their current situation.
30. What does the underlined word “streamline” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Extend. B. Abandon. C. Evaluate. D. Simplify.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. FOBO: Decision-making Anxiety
B. Deciding Wisely: Avoiding Regret
C. FOBO: The Secret to Better Choices
D. Refusing Overthinking: Trusting Yourself
D
An Anna’s Hummingbird (蜂鸟) was seen in the forest in California recently. As it
moved its head, its feathers changed colors in the sunlight. The Anna’s Hummingbird is a
small hummingbird found along the west coast of North America. The male Anna’s
Hummingbird has colourful feathers on its head and throat, which can appear red, pink,
orange, or green. This has led to the assumption that the bird can actively(主动地)
change the colour of its feathers, but it is actually not the case.
The colour shifts we see are caused by the structure of the feathers, not by changes to
the actual colouring of the feathers. The tiny structures on the surface of the feathers
interact with light waves to produce certain colors. Anna’s Hummingbird feathers have tiny
structures called melanosomes (黑色素体) that look like stacked flat discs (圆片). These
disc stacks are super thin, close to the size of the light waves we can see. When sunlight
hits these discs, the light waves bounce and interact with each other. Some colors get
brighter, while others cancel out, creating shining rainbow effects — similar to how soap
bubbles. This “light dance” is why hummingbird feathers look so colourful!
Unlike Anna’s Hummingbirds, some birds change the colour of their feathers in a
different way. For example, the Western Tanager has yellow feathers on its head and body.
During molting (蜕毛), it can absorb the yellow colour to display an orange-red colour
underneath. Thus, while Anna’s Hummingbirds rely purely on the structures of feathers,
other birds actively control the colour spread and feather movement to produce
changeable feathers.
The special feather structures in Anna’s Hummingbirds allow us to witness the
diversity and wonder of the world. Next time you observe an Anna’s Hummingbird in the
sun, watch closely as its throat seems to flash in rainbow colors. But remember — this
magic is happening in the structures through physics(物理学),not biology.
32. What can we learn about Anna’s Hummingbirds according to the passage?
A. Their migration happens along the coast of America.
B. They move their ways towards the position of the sun.
C. Their wings are covered with colourful feathers.
D. They are unable to control the colour changes.
33. What causes the colour changes of Anna’s Hummingbirds?
高三英语 第 5 页 共 8 页A. The high brightness of their feathers. B. The actual colouring of their feathers.
C. The surface structure of their feathers. D. The seasonal changes of their feathers.
34. What can be inferred from paragraph 3 about the Western Tanager?
A. It absorbs various light waves.
B. It actively changes the colour of the feathers.
C. It mainly generates the yellow colour feathers.
D. It depends on its head to change colors.
35. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To advocate for the conservation of Anna’s Hummingbirds.
B. To explain the biological process of feather colour changes.
C. To highlight the diversity and wonder of physics in nature.
D. To compare colour-changing ways among different birds.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有
两项为多余选项。
Whether things go right or wrong, feedback is always necessary. 36
However, providing effective feedback is not easy, as it typically requires several
components. Now let’s examine each of them.
Start on a positive note. Constructive criticism should always start on a positive note.
It feels unfair and rude if someone tells you everything you did wrong without
acknowledging your achievements. So when giving feedback, don’t just note the mistakes
the receivers have made. 37
Be specific. Effective feedback needs to be specific. Inform the receivers precisely
what aspects require improvement so they can identify and address those areas. For
example, don’t say, “Your presentation was unclear. ” Instead, say something like, “The
introduction of your presentation was a bit confusing. 3 8 ” This way, the receiver
knows exactly what to concentrate on and can make more targeted improvements.
39 The whole point of feedback is to help someone make changes for the better.
So you should provide ideas on how to improve. It’s crucial, however, to ensure that your
ideas are actionable. For instance, “You need to work on your communication skills”
sounds too general. It would be much better if you say, “Try practicing active listening and
summarizing what others say to ensure you understand them fully. ”
Be timely. 40 It only works if it happens very close to an issue arising. For
example, say you’re with a coworker and notice something in the sales pitch he is working
on. Instead of waiting for him to run into problems, provide the feedback right away. This
gives the receiver the chance to make changes and avoid problems.
A.Offer practical advice.
B.Focus on making changes.
C.It helps us learn from our mistakes and grow.
D.It lacks a clear topic sentence at the beginning.
E.Feedback isn’t of much use if it comes too late.
F.The feedback acknowledges the hard work the person did.
G.Instead, begin by recognizing their effort and what they got right.

短文。
Alice was absolutely crazy about dancing. As long as she was free at home, she would
turn on the TV, and follow the dance tutorials step by step. Over time, she had learned a
great deal from those TV programs, mastering various dance moves that made her look like
a professional dancer.
When the school put up a notice announcing the upcoming New Year’s Eve party,
which included a dance performance section, a strong desire welled up in Alice’s chest.
She imagined herself dancing to her favorite music on the bright stage, and receiving
cheers from the audience. But the beautiful vision quickly faded when she thought about
her family. The image of her sick father lying in bed, and her mother working day and
night to earn money to support the family popped into her mind. She was quite sure her
family couldn’t afford the expensive performing dress. With a heavy sigh, she made up her
mind to give up the chance.
One afternoon, Alice found a quiet corner in the classroom to call her mom. She took
out her old, worn-out phone, her fingers hovering over the dial button for a moment before
pressing it. When her mom’s voice came through the phone, Alice’s eyes immediately
became wet. “Mom, I... I won’t join the dance show at the New Year’s Eve party,” she said,
trying her best to make her voice sound calm. “It’s not necessary. The dress needed for the
performance is too costly…” She bit her lower lip to hold back the tears, not wanting her
mom to worry.
Little did Alice know that her best friends, Anna and Estelle, had walked past the
classroom and heard her words. They stopped in their tracks, looking at each other with
heavy hearts. Anna’s eyes were filled with sympathy, and Estelle gently bit her lip, feeling
sorry for Alice. They knew how much Alice loved dancing, and it pained them to hear her
give up her dream like that.
