Some people consider devices like iPhones and laptops to be a roadblock to an enjoyable vacation. But for my
recent trip to Europe, using gadgets enhanced my journey without breaking the bank.
Here are some international technology travel tips:
TripIt:
The best way to keep track of your flight details and other travel information is with a free account at
TripIt.com. As you book flights and hotels, just send the confirmation e-mails to plans @ tripit.com and the service
will automatically create an itinerary (行程表) for you. TripIt offers a great free app that will let you access your
travel plans when you are offline, as long as you sync (同步) it once when you have an Internet connection.
Google MapsWe added a 50 MB international data plan so we could access Google Maps walking directions. Since it’s hard
to quantify how much data you will need, use the iPhone’s cellular (无线的,蜂窝的) network data trackers to
keep track of usage and use little of your phone. Turn off automatic e-mail checking and active notifications, and
put the phone in airplane mode whenever you are not using it. While Google’s walking directions came in handy
many times, they weren’t always correct, so it’s smart to keep an old-fashioned paper map as well. You’ll also want
to carry an iPhone charger with you, or spare battery for when you run out of juice.
Riversteves
Many of Europe’s world-class museums such as the Louvre in Paris and the Prado in Madrid have portable
audio tour guides, but the guides can cost as much as 6 euros each in addition to your admission.
In some cases, we skipped the museum guides and downloaded free high-quality podcast audio tours from
well-known travel author and TV host Rick Steves. The free audio tours can be downloaded from riversteves.com
or iTunes, and they feature pictures for each stop on the tour so you can make sure you are in the right place.
21.Which of the following can help you track your travel details?
A.iTunes. B.Riversteves. C.TripIt. D.Google Map.
22.What does Riversteves offer you?
A.Beautiful pictures of world-class museums. B.Free podcast audio tours.
C.Exciting travel stories of Rick Steves. D.Charged audio tour guides.
23.What do these apps have in common?
A.They mainly save money in the holiday.
B.They aim to keep track of the new technology.
C.They make for a good holiday experience.
D.They guarantee good preparations for the holiday.

In 2018, the state of California was on fire. Alexandria Villasenor, who was 13 at the time, witnessed the
destruction of Northern California’s Camp Fire, which would go on to burn more than 150,000 acres of land.
Villasenor was scared. “That’s when I found out how important climate education was,” she reflected. “And just
how much we lacked climate education these past couple of years.”
Villasenor, now 15, is determined to have a bigger conversation. She quickly realized the fight requires
international, govemment-level changes. For her, what started as local concern turned into a year-long protest infront of the United Nations’ New York City headquarters and a global campaign for more compulsory climate
education. She sat on a bench in front of the headquarters, pleading for the world’s leaders to take climate change
seriously.
Her action received national attention, with millions of other students around the world joining in the
movement. “It’s completely unacceptable to not learn anything about our planet and our environment in school,
after all the young people would ‘inherit’ the Earth.” Villasenor said, “That’s why I think that climate education is
so important, and that’s why I focus a lot on it now.”
Right now, Villasenor is working with the Biden-Harris administration on its climate plan, which has promised
to center the needs of young people and communities most impacted by climate change. She even spoke at the 2020
Democratic National Convention. “That was definitely a huge moment when I realized that people were listening to
the voices of me and youth climate activists,” Villasenor said.
When she isn’t connecting with her fellow youth activists or holding elected officials accountable to the
climate concerns of their young voters, Villasenor is like most other teens. “My favorite thing to do, of course, is
sleep.” she said. “I like to read a lot. I like fantasy books, normally. I also like to write.”
24.What made Villasenor realize the lack of climate education?
A.The state of California. B.The fire disasters in America.
C.150, 000 acres of land scaring her. D.The severe Camp fire in California.
25.What does the underlined part “have a bigger conversation” mean?
A.To talk with more local people to change their mind.
B.To convey her belief loudly to more global students.
C.To protest to leaders at home and abroad to make changes.
D.To call on local people to fight with the leaders.
26.Which of the following facts gives Villasenor a sense of achievement?
A.That she is working with the Biden-Harris administration on its climate plan.
B.That her and other youth climate activists’ opinions caught people’s attention.
C.That she can sleep and read in her spare time.
D.That more schools have set up climate courses.
27.What is this passage mainly about?
A.The 15-year-old activist fighting for better climate education.
B.Climate education deserves everyone’s attention around the world.C.How to prevent camp fire.
D.Young activists make their voices heard.

Among the many ecological disasters that terrify us today, one that only a handful of people have considered
as sufficiently terrifying is the loss of the bats in our church tower. According to “The Darkness Manifesto”
(Scribner), by the Swedish ecologist Johan Eklf, most churches in southwest Sweden had bat colonies back in the
nineteen-eighties, and now most of them don’t.
Light pollution, his research suggests, has been a major reason: “District after district has installed modern
floodlights to show the architecture it’s proud of, all the while the animals-who have for centuries found safety in
the darkness of the church towers and who have for 70 million years made the night their home-are slowly but
surely vanishing from these places.”
The difference between light and dark is, in a way, arbitrary: what counts as light and what as darkness
depends on what wavelengths we can make out. But the nocturnal (夜间活动的) world gives rise to creatures,
equipped with large-pupilled and infrared-sensitive eyes, that see what we cannot and that, under cover of darkness,
act as we can only imagine.
We learn, for instance, of the ghost moths, a species in which the adult males appear in fields in twilight,
floating weirdly as they signal to the females-only to mate once and then fall to the ground dead. Though Eklf tells
us that these creatures are threatened by the confusing presence of artificial light and that moths play a crucial role
as pollinators (“something of invaluable importance for keeping our ecosystem undamaged and thriving”), what
one recalls is the sad fate of their couplings.
Nor are bugs and birds alone affected by the light; so are plants, and so are humans. Our eyes adapt badly to
darkness, and our night vision-which is activated by the pigment protein rhodopsin (视紫红质)-takes a long while
to turn on. By now, cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong are so brightly lit that their inhabitants scarcely call on
night vision at all, and, as their rhodopsin becomes unnecessary, they may well create people in later generations
who, in even middling darkness, are as blind as bats.
28.How has light pollution affected bats in southwest Sweden?
A.Bats have had nowhere to stay. B.Bats have adapted to well-lit environment.
C.Bats have moved away from the church towers. D.Bats have become endangered.
29.Which of the following can best describe nocturnal creatures?A.They are sensitive to different wavelengths of light.
B.They are only active during the daytime.
C.They are not affected by light pollution.
D.They are unable to see in darkness.
30.What does the writer want to tell us by the example in paragraph 4?
A.The arbitrary nature of light and dark. B.The beauty and tragedy of the ghost moths.
C.The threat that nocturnal creatures face. D.The importance of nocturnal creatures.
31.How does the writer sound in the last paragraph?
A.Highly critical of the local government. B.Alarmed by the impact of artificial light.
C.Curious about the effects of light pollution. D.Admiring of the adaptability of bats.

One of the oldest metaphors (隐喻) for human interaction with technology is the relationship of master and
slave. Aristotle imagined that technology could replace slavery if machine became automated. Marx and Engels
saw things differently. “Masses of laborers are daily and hourly enslaved by the machine,” they wrote in the
Communist Manifesto.
Today, computers often play both roles. Nicholas Carr, in his new book The Glass Cage: Automation and Us,
takes a stand on whether such technology imprisons or liberates its users. We are increasingly engaged, he argues,
but the invisibility of our high-tech traps gives us the ‘image of freedom’. He describes doctors who rely so much
on decision-assistance software that they overlook signals that are not obvious from patients.
All of this has obvious implications for the use of technology in classrooms: When do technologies free
students to think about more interesting and complex questions, and when do they destroy the very cognitive (认
知) capacities that they are meant to improve? The effect of spell check and AutoCorrect software is an example.
Psychologists have found the act of forming a word in your mind strengthens your capacity to remember it. When a
computer automatically corrects a spelling mistake, we’re no longer forced to form the correct spelling in our
minds.
This might not seem very important. The process of word formation is not just supplementing spelling skills,
it’s also destroying students. When students find themselves without automated spelling assistance, they don’t face
the prospect of freezing to death, as the Inuits did when their GPS malfunctioned, but they’re more likely to make
errors. This creates a vicious cycle: The more we use the technology, the more we need to use it in allcircumstances. Suddenly, our position as masters of technology starts to seem more insecure.
32.What did Marx and Engels think of the machine?
A.It did the boring daily work for people.
B.It failed to free people from being enslaved.
C.It gave people more time to enjoy themselves.
D.It was the result of the development of technology.
33.Which of the following is Nicholas Carr most likely to agree with?
A.Technology is a guarantee of freedom.
B.Doctors should stay away from technology.
C.Too much involvement with technology may be risky.
D.Some decision-assistance software needs improving.
34.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph4 refer to?
A.Students being unable to spell words correctly.
B.Spell check helping students remember more words.
C.Students depending too much on spelling software.
D.Spellcheck destroying students’ cognitive capacities.
35.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Is technology making people stupid or not?
B.Which areas are most affected by technology?
C.Are people satisfied with the advancement of technology?
D.Why shouldn’t technology be employed in the classroom?

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My wife and I never had a green thumb when it came to keeping plants alive far more than a few weeks. So,
when I was diagnosed with cancer we didn’t even think about adding a plant to our small apartment. But one day,
my friend stopped by and gave us a beautiful plant as a gift, insisting that it would bring life to our home and a
sense of calmness during this difficult time.
Surprisingly, the plant took off and grew beautifully, and it brought a sense of joy to our home that we
desperately needed. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt
useless.
I am a physician, and taking care of the plant made me feel like a caregiver once again. It was nice to be able
to nurture something and watch it grow. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed, I had to
rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as
small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity. Plants and people could still depend on me.
For the next few months, I was recovering from surgery and receiving radiation. Despite my ongoingtreatments, we found some peace through tending to the plant. The simple act of watering and watching it
grow gave us something to focus 4 outside of my health. It became a small but meaningful part of our lives.
Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness.
